It's basically a short term solution (1st 20 games) to adding points to "offensive" or "physical" skill points before having to add to your defensive skill set.
It actually helps with your On-Ball defense by putting you in front of your matchup. It DOES NOT help with defensive switches (Def Awareness) and or the "ice skating" during key games!
As you are well aware at first its pretty hard to stay with your matchup in the first 20 games w/o adding to the above mentioned skills (OBD & DA), but, if you really need to add points to Speed & Quickness out of the gate, (Guard-Scoring/3-pt Specialist) this is a good "stop gap"!
You can never go wrong adding to Consistency, Shot Medium, On Ball Defense and Free Throws out the gate. What is the "Playstyle" of your Guard (Athletic/Scoring, etc)?
SG is a very demanding position in MyPlayer, IMHO. You are always on an island, defending the best Scorer every night and trying to get your shot off.
1. You have to pay attention to your On-Ball Defense bc, letting your matchup go off makes it so difficult to get good teammate grades. Remember A+ guarantees that you will earn 1000 skill points every game!!!
2. Jump shooting is an art, but, it's just one weapon and frankly its not that reliable once the AI recognizes that you can actually score with consistency, so you need other weapons when the AI decides to "fool with" your accuracy.
Add points to your Low Post Shot and Strength; the CPU will compensate and call plays for you in the Low Post which is a LETHAL weapon and a much easier shot to make in a slump (trips to the FT line)!
Don't sleep on Shot Close, Layup; adding a Runner/Floater to your shot selection is another lethal weapon.
Set picks on the perimeter and roll to the open space for jumpers or layups
3. Learn to call for Picks!!!
4. Pay attention to your Tendencies (player card); the AI is brutal to Hop & Pop shooters. Mix up your gameplay with passes off picks, pump fake and dribble to your left/right and shoot, etc.
5. Dunk is great once you learn to Drive effectively, but, I would not add to this expensive skill set OVER the 3-pt Shot! A dunk does effect team morale but so does the "dagger" 3! Dunk is just 2 pts,,,,

6. Off Hand Dribbling helps with dribble moves, ball security keeps you from getting stripped and Passing helps with Turnovers...all are important for Guards and more important than dunking, IMHO....however, saving some points when you hit milestones is an effective strategy to move your Dunk rating towards (65) as a "strategic" plan.

I really enjoy playing Center, and this comment is right on. Pay attention to space and angles for the ball handler to get you the ball, then call for it!
I love doing this on a "delayed" fastbreak and going down the lane and slamming! Pick the defenders to death on the perimeter and roll to the basket. Add to your Shot Med (65-70) and pop that jumper at the top of the key!
A very CREATIVE move on your part!!! And like your determination to get WHAT YOU WANT!
However, the MyPlayer mode is designed to be a "build" of skills & attributes and depending on the "PlayStyle" they lack certain skills and ESPECIALLY attributes that the CPU auto assigns to cpu generated "rookies" and veterans.
For example, if you started with an Athletic PG who had Abilities for example for Shooting you would be much higher rated than a 60 because of the advanced physical traits given to the Athletic playstyle; ...And of course Scoring & 3-pt Specialist get Average abilties to start w/ but are SLOW as turtles and can't jump,...
So how do you compensate to make the player a OVR: 60?
p.s. - I actually do this in MLB The Show - RTTS ; me and some friends add each other as minor league prospects to our favorite teams so they appear when we hit the majors. We basically use the skill set the player had the season prior - before they where called up to "The Show",,,its pretty cool seeing friends as you progress through your career.
