Re: CPU Timeout problem, reason inside
Well, lets hold on a sec...
Let us define VC for a moment. BEFORE the release of ESPN NFL 2K5, ESPN NHL 2K5, and ESPN NBA 2K5- the same VC apologists in these same forums said they preferred the ESPN series because it DID cater MORE to the hard-core sim gamer (or they were REALLY going to attempt to with the 2K5 releases.)
Back then, the "VC or Nothing" crowd argued that EA was making arcadey rubbish, and VC represented the sim/realism type games that gamers (Such as us) wanted.
(I'm sure we all remember those pre-release posts.)
..Now- the VC apologists on these boards, after seeing the plethora of bugs and oversights, glitches and gimmes- are saying "Give VC a break! They make an enjoyable game for the casual gamer and you gripers are just too hard-core."
...UH.... ?????
So which is it gonna be? Are they now the "casual sports game" company, as apposed to the "simulation/presentation answer to our prayers" some of you guys hoped their games would be BEFORE they were released?
You can't have the argument both ways!
(Of course, the people in this forum that once touted the "Simminess" of ESPN's games who are now telling us to shut up and be more like casual gamers will no doubt not own up to it now, but you know who you are.)
Its rather comical- just like the NCAA Football 2005 XBOX puppetts out there who swear they like the way that "EA slowed down the running game so they can read the holes better." (Funny, I don't remember "New, Slower gameplay!" as being part of the advertised feature set in the game!) EA didn't slow down the gameplay on purpose! It was bad quality control for the framey, choppy XBOX version.
But there's always that phenominon of "I just payed $XX.XX for this game, and dammit, I'm gonna like it no matter what!" And it plays itself out on the forums of every sports game community known to man.
And to them, to each his own. Whatever.
BUT- getting back to the "Would you wait several years for a bug free game" question. Well, I think Admiral50 said it best in pointing out that some of these bugs have been there for multiple years- particularly in the NFL series. That's inexcuseable. Lets face it- some of these "bugs" would be relatively easy to fix. Example- the timeout bug was a foolish, unexcuseable oversight of the shoddiest variety. Any playtester worth $8 per hour would have discovered it quickly. And it wouldn't be that hard to fix before the game went "Gold". But this is the kind of thing VC does ALL THE TIME. It wouldn't take "years" to fix some of the major bugs these games have. Just a little attention to detail, and a few weeks, not years.
But now people on this board are foolishly arguing that VC must do what makes "good financial sense" and rush their product out the door at all costs, despite quality issues. Wow- some of you will wave the VC flag till death. That's crazy! Don't you realize that VC is fast becoming (or has already become) what probably led you away from whatever EA game you don't play anymore?
So is it logical to defend VC no matter what?
And yet, I'm starting to think that if VC put a turd on a plate, some of you would eat it, just as long as the plate didn't say "Electronic Arts" on it. Oh wait, I guess it all depends on the PRESENTATION of that turd also, because "better presentation" is what some of you care about the most, and innovation in the presentation department is far more important than quality control issues, right?
I laugh at the "EA till Death" people.
I laugh at the "VC till Death" people.
And I think how foolish some fanboys are.Comment

Re: CPU Timeout problem, reason inside
But there's a potential solution to this problem for both EA's series' and that of ESPN.
Next year, they should make their sports games install core databases to a local system hard drive. (That is no problem for XBOX, since it has a hard drive, but it would force the PS2 crowd to have to buy the HD add-on.)
(Sorry GameCubers.. but VC already kicked you to the curb anyway)
Anyway- if you have the game CD install a local game directory with key game data, AI scripts, roster-data, etc.. VC or EA could go back and patch this directory as bugs become known. This is what PC game companies do.
The only thing holding them back is.
1. Habit
2. The uncomfortable suggestion of mandating that EA and/or VC sports games require the PS2 gamers to buy the HD addon.
But this would end much of the problems (assuming that VC and/or EA would proactively patch their games.)
This is the next logical step in the evolution of console sports games, and would be the smartest thing sports game companies could do at this point.Comment

Re: CPU Timeout problem, reason inside
I think VC is getting more arcady & EA is getting more sim.. The bottom line is money.. If you asked VC if they could make a great sim title that would please hardcore gamers but not make as much money, they wouldn't do it. VC knows this. They cover it up with fluff, presentation, & great graphics.. Casual gamers dictate how sports games are played.. Madden rates players faster to make the game more 'fun'.. Again. I'm sure some QA tester found the TO set to manual in CPU setting, but it's VC's call... I read about QA testers complaining about bugs that the developers fail to fix for whatever reason.. Companys will continue to add more modes & fluff while neglecting the bug problem, & the gameplay will play 2nd fiddle.. Fixing bugs doesn't make as big an impression as new modes.. Which is a better selling point from a marketing perspective.. All the bugs are fixed this yr or VIP & a bigger crib.. & admitting bugs is also somthing that VC/EA wont admit..Redskins Fan. Can't speak for anyone else, but for me I don't see everything in black and white as you're trying to paint it. There are areas of gray. VC and EA are operating on different levels - VC HAD to price their games at $20 this year just to get them noticed. SURELY you can admit that. If VC waited and released their games 1-2 months after EA released their counterparts, they would've gotten smoked in sales. And holding the games longer doesn't guarantee that the games will be bug-free. You need look no further than what NFL2k4 went through last year. I'm not trying to be a VC apologist. But geez, in one of your earlier posts you compared the bug issue to a Ferrari missing a car door, air conditioning, working power windows, etc. That's WAY too extreme.Originally posted by quietcool72So is it logical to defend VC no matter what?
Are the bugs irritating? Of course. You don't have a ton of people out there saying they aren't going to buy Madden because of the quicksand glitch. Or because they couldn't import draft classes last year. You only see that type of extremism on the forums. If you read a lot of the posts here now, people are trying to adjust sliders to get this game to be as close to real life as possible. Most people are amazed that games have even evolved THIS far; let alone trying to get them to accurately portray real life. I heard a sportstalk radio host talk about how amazed he was that videogame football had evolved to what it was, and how realistic it looked. He then surprised me by saying he was talking about NCAA 2005. Most of us would admit that NCAA is easily the worst looking of the big three football games. But most people don't have the same standards people here do.
This analogy may have already been made, but I liken this stuff to someone scoring an 85-90 on a test. Their parents constantly harp on them about the easy questions they missed that might've improved their score, in hopes that if they nag them enough the person will take his time taking the test next time and get a better score. The strategy will probably work. But what about the accomplishment of doing well on the test in the first place?HBO's "The Wire" should rank as one of the top 10 shows EVER on tv - period

Nothing yet.Originally posted by wtferrellAs I'm not going to sift through 30 pages of talk, what is the status on the TO bug? Has there been an official confirmation that a fix is on the way?

I'm holding off playing this game until this is fixed. And I pray it's soon... Otherwise, it's going on EBAY or EBGames.Comment

You don't get it do you? People aren't asking for a game to be BUG-FREE. What people ARE asking is that MAJOR bugs be resolved and for the features that were advertised to WORK as advertised before releasing. It's bad practice for any company to release a title that has major bugs still in them, and incomplete features.
I don't care what their price point is, what they're going through in their company politics or whatever, releasing half-finished games doesn't help their rep, and they'll end up having to BEG their customers to buy their games if their rep's sufficiently destroyed. Then they did themselves in, and they have themselves to blame for it. There's a certain level of quality control you expect in a game, and IMHO, Visual Concepts isn't delivering on it.Comment
