I think I posted this before but Bill Simmons wrote a hell of an article along these lines:

I know I've been dragging this soap box from forum to forum but all these guys are using something, it's just a matter of what is or isn't against the league we're talking about... and the difference between what is or isn't allowed has nothing to do with how effective the substance is. So it really shouldn't break your heart if he's popping something he bought from GNC that is on the list vs something that isn't.

Steroids are illegal period, so there is that difference but that'd still be the same as if he were doing other illegal drugs like cocaine or (likely) weed. If that'd break your heart too then I can understand feeling that way. But like the supplements, steroids aren't illegal bc they're more effective than anything else.

does the nba even do testing? and if they do, seems like you'd have to go out of your way to get caught.

rashard lewis is the only guy that i can think of that ever got popped for any type of illegal substance.

Keep in mind I'm not saying that will happen, but if it did I would not be stunned at all.
So basically he could be the Dwayne Johnson of the NBA then?

You could argue that both are forms of scripted entertainment.

When they do start the testings it'll surely be around the sports media. Since I think a couple of players will get caught. Though I also think that with nothing too serious.

                    Re: The LeBron James Thread

This is a noteworthy quote from the Simmons article regarding NBA testing..

The following anecdote is 100 percent true …
NBA players get tested up to four times during the course of a season. The fourth time can happen at any point from October to June, but once it happens, that's it. So if your fourth test occurs after your 71st game, you're clear the rest of the way. It's a running joke within NBA circles, something of a get-out-of-jail-free card: Once you pee in that fourth cup, you're good to go. Put whatever you want into your body. Feel like smoking enough weed to make Harold and Kumar blush? Knock yourself out. Feel like replacing your blood with cleaner blood so you have more endurance for the playoffs? Knock yourself out. Feel like starting a testosterone cycle because you might have to play 25 grueling playoff games over the next 10 weeks? Knock yourself out. Remember how competitive these guys are. What would they do for an edge? How far would they go? And why are we giving them the choice?

                      Pretty much.

I also look at the Jay-Z angle when thinking about that. Michael did his two retirement thing, so then of course Jay did it as he always referred to himself as the Mike Jordan of rap. LeBron idolized Jordan and still has a relationship with Jay, I wouldn't put it past him to go away to do some other **** and come back or stay gone if he's wildly successful elsewhere.

I really hope you don't think that's what Jay Z did, or why.

That Simmons quote is awkward because he asks the hypothetical what if you're tested on game 71.

Well, heck, he said the last test can happen between October and June.

That is ridiculous. How can I look at any player that has a breakout year the same?

Forget Game 71. If your fourth test happens in October, we are talking a full season of no more testing. A full season!

                            That's alarming.

He didn't? The Black Album was his "retirement" and if it wasn't be definitely did a poor job conveying that, what with him yelling from the rooftops how he was retiring and whatnot. He ran Def Jam (something he didn't need to retire to do) for a while then started dropping albums again. Am I missing something?

                                1. He's not an athlete... his body didn't fail him preventing him from his craft. Like many music artists, he said he wasn't making any more music only to be drawn back in.

                                2. His "comeback" album (may have only been a year later, lol) he made it pretty clear that the garbage that was on the radio was his driving force. If I were to take him by his word (don't know why we would ever do that with entertainers... especially words used to promote their craft) I'd say he thought his style was outdated and then realized a bunch of crap is out there making money.

                                3. Most importantly for this thread and this forum, whatever the truth is I HIGHLY doubt it was premeditated, and am positive it had nothing to do with Jordan.

                                4. You shouldn't put so much weight in a rapper who's a huge basketball fan writing lyrics about the greatest basketball player of all time. They're lyrics man.
