So having had some time since the draft to do some reading on Williams, listened to some interviews from the prior weeks leading up to the draft from guys who actually watch college ball and saw the kid play, seeing the comps and watching a little video myself, I’m on board with Williams. Draft choice is not questionable at all and the Bulls may walk away from this awful draft with one of if not the steal of the draft. We’ll see how this staff/front office develops him. By all accounts though, he’s a hard worker and he will put in the time.
From what I’ve been seeing, next years draft is good, so worst case Bulls are high picking in a much better draft.
I don’t need this year’s team to make the playoffs, although a playoff run would be nice. If this was still the previous front office, then yes they need to show significant improvement to this roster to justify what they’re doing. But a front office that’s been on the job for about 7 or 8 months during a global pandemic without really having meaningful access to the roster they’ve inherited? I’m absolutely okay with this year being a season to get these guys into their development program and actually get their own eyes on this roster from the inside as opposed to watching tape from another team on the outside. If a deal worth while comes along during the course of this, they’ll no doubt pull the trigger if it wows them. We’ll see what else they can add. Once Porter opted into that contract that put the bullet into whatever money they could really spend.
Only thing I’d like to see now from this team is if we could somehow get GS to give up Wiseman. If that means shipping them Wendell and LaVine and taking back Wiggin’s contract I’d be all for that and go full blown youth movement with Coby, Williams and Wiseman as the untouchable core to build around.
