    Re: Age limit

This is really a ridiculous argument, essentially it comes down to two schools of thought:

    1) The college fan who wants to see these kids go to his alma mater to make his team better. Thus making college basketball relevant again

    2) The pro fan who feels that high schoolers are bringing down the quality of play.

Here's the problem with #1, a kid who wants to go to the NBA without college has no right taking a spot away from someone who wants the college experience. Why should a scholarship be taken away from someone who intends to graduate just to make college basketball better? Colleges are higher education institutions and should be only for those who want/need the degree and the other things you get from college. Also, nothing stops a kid from going back to college when he wants to, except instead of being held hostage by the system he can use his own wealth. See Kevin Garnett for example. College basketball fans rarely care about the kids coming through their program, they only care about their conference or their alma-mater.

The problem with #2 is that we aren't holding the adults in positions of power accountable. These are professional executives who should be basing their decisions on what helps their teams. If they cant help themselves from drafting high schoolers then that's on them. If they want kids to not come straight out of high school, then dont draft them. Why do they insist on drafting kids with no college basketball experience? Ask San Antonion if they would have preferred Tony Parker to not come to the NBA before college, ask Minny if they are disappointed with Garnett, ask the Lakers if they would rather have kept Eddie Jones vs. trading for the rights to Kobe Bryant whom Jerry West claimed had the "best workout he'd ever seen". Ask Cleveland if they shouldn't have taken Lebron James. Out of the last 6 championships, there has been a high schooler who has played a key component in 5 out of those titles.

Forget the hypocrasy of being able to die for your country, or that child actors dont have an age limit, or tennis players, or hockey, or baseball players. At some point people should stop trying to condemn the young kids coming out of high school to petty wages, and instead see the other side of the coin.

The problem with this analogy is that your examples (job, homes) have INTRINSIC age limits. You cannot sign a contract, to buy a home or car, for example, until you are 19 in most states. That is an age limit. On top of that, how many 12 year olds have thousands of dollars in consistent income per month to pay bills? How many 20 year old doctors do you see walking around hospitals?

The same reason everyone else goes to college. To grow up.

I tend to think working hard in the NCAAs for a couple years under coaches who are more TEACHERS and less EGO CONTROL like in the pros is better for a player than sitting on a bench in the pros, never seeing the floor, and getting paid more money than he knows how to handle. All that does is prevent the kid from learning in college (we're talking education too), hurts NCAA Basketball, and gives the kid a big head. MOST of the time, they never even make an impact in the NBA for whatever reason. Who knows what lessons they may have learned in college that would have helped them. On top of that, NBA franchises would be protected greatly by being able to see these kids against real competition, as opposed to taking shots in the dark.
          Spit that knowledge!!!

Its hit or miss though, and dont agree with any rule that actively boycotts or prohibits a persons right to a job. As driddy said outside of football there are no age limits on any other sport so why should there be one in basketball. There is a need for a very good developmental program that young players should go through. Not just summer leagues but actual double A team you can send a player like the NBDL does.

I hear what you are saying but look at it. Football is the model league and it the most watched and suceesful league. Basketball, Baseball, and hockey are all losing there importance in the sports world. There should be an age limit like there is for many sucesssful jobs. Would you hire a 18 yr old lawyer to defend you in court. Or a 18 yr old to do your taxes or perform an operation on you. Yeah you have a couple of special type of people that come once in a blue moon but thats it.

I completely agree with an age limit for one you go through college and let your body develop. Two what other job lets you go and just work out of high school. Also think about if any of these super young player go to college and play in the tournament a pressure feeled atmostphere they could learn to deal with the pressure and help an NBA team. Also what if the team wants to go out and celebrate a player straight out of high school can't go too young. With an age limit an 18 yr. kid is not throwing there life away just two years to go college and learn to be a man.
