It interesting to see how some cap space teams handle Free Agency/trades with the new CBA forcing teams to reach the salary cap floor before the season. It's pretty much known that Houston and Indiana is going to spend money. Indiana is likely going to go after something like Kuzma or Barnes. I can the Pistons and Spurs taking on one of those salary dumping trades to get future picks and reach salary floor

"ESPN Sources: The Hawks are finalizing a trade to send F/C John Collins to the Jazz for Rudy Gay and a future second-round pick. Atlanta’s largely unloading Collins’ three years, $78M for some roster building flexibility and alignment with looming changes to salary cap."
Literally just a salary dump. Least we don't have to hear about the annual Collins trade rumorsLast edited by illwill10; 06-26-2023, 12:54 PM.Comment

Re: 2023 Offseason Thread
Glad to see John finally get out of the disaster situation of Atlanta as he deserves better. Utah is a getting a quality player for free. A smart team like Utah takes advantages of bad ownership and that's what they did.
John was a 20 & 10 player shooting 40% from 3 and in the top 1% of the NBA in the pick and roll game with his athleticism. Since that time, he has improved his defense to being above average.
Trae also gets some of the blame in this because we brought in two of his boys (clint and murray) trying to excel the win now process so he wouldn't demand a trade. Clint had to be the roll guy because he has no other skills on offense and that hurt John. When it was time trade him and open the door up for your former 6th overall pick. He was signed to a extension and hasn't been traded because Trae wants him here. Then Murray another player needing a lot of shots was brought in.
Collins was the one that always had to sacrifice his game for the team. Hopefully his finger will get healed as that must be hurting his shoot. I hate to see him, go but he deserves better then Atlanta.Retro Redemption - Starting over with a oldschool PowerBone Offense

Re: 2023 Offseason Thread
Basically stay under that 182mm or whatever it comes out to be and not all that much changes.
Teams above the 2nd apron (aside from paying more in tax) lose their tax payer MLE, cannot sign players on the buyout market, cannot use cash for trades, can only trade picks out to 6 years (instead of 7), Cannot take back more salary than they send out in trades, can't combine salaries in trades..
Edit: Basically if you're over that 2nd apron you can pretty much resign your own players and add minimum contracts. Other ways to improve have basically been eliminated.. I bet we see A LOT more movement coming.Last edited by ojandpizza; 06-26-2023, 01:24 PM.Comment

I'm not crazy about him. He's had some development from outside. But he needs the right system to take advantage of his skill set. If he was a better defender I think he'd go far.Hands Down....Man Down - 2k9 memories

Obviously his touches and drawn-up usage was down from everything you mentioned. But he needed more of that Aaron Gordon, Bruce Brown in him where if Murray/Joker has the ball high they look for every crack in the defense they can to slip back-door. I don't think Collins sees the floor like that.Comment

Re: 2023 Offseason Thread
I'm not the biggest fan of John Collins' game since his finger injury sapped his shooting potential, but to get him for a Rudy Gay that we had been trying to offload all year, and a 2nd round pick?

Re: 2023 Offseason Thread
I feel like, and you've watched a lot more than I have, John was also not all that great at creating opportunities for himself while watching the action around him. Low offensive awareness/IQ. Reminds me a bit of Chris Bosh with Miami. Like he and Love had similar roles to space the floor, but we know when Love got a small mismatch he would go post the mismatch regardless of what play they were running. If a slow big was on him he would slip screens regardless of if Kyrie or Bron had the ball... Bosh was content with standing and watching. Not a lot of cutting, posting, taking slower bigs off the dribble, etc if it wasn't part of the designed set.. Collins feels similar to me, too much time watching the action and not enough creating opportunities for himself in a "freelance" sorta of way.

Re: 2023 Offseason Thread
The Hawks have lost their sig privileges with me. First Huerter, now Collins.
I'm OK with trading Collins. Tired of the never-ending rumors and a fresh start is probably a good thing for both him and the team. I think he'll do well with Utah.
I realize it was a salary dump, but I've got to think the Hawks could have done better than Rudy Gay and a second-rounder.Comment

Think almost everything noteworthy applies to the new 2nd tax apron.

Re: 2023 Offseason Thread
Everyone makes a big deal about his shooting which was bad this year, the previous 3 years from 3 on 3 attempts per game 36%, 39% and 40%.
For the 2nd straight year Atlanta traded a starting caliber for $ reasons while likely about to make another win now move.Retro Redemption - Starting over with a oldschool PowerBone Offense
