    Wiltse Spins Shutout Against Cubs
Tuesday, June 5th, 1906: Wiltse Spins Shutout Against Cubs
On the hill Hooks Wiltse stood out and was the master of the moment as he blanked Chicago 11-0.

At bat the Cubs floundered, fizzled and failed to score.

"His fastball moves and he mixes in the slider," the Chicago manager said. "He kept us off-balance."

The New York pitcher hurled a 6-hit shutout in an exceptional effort. He gave up 1 walk and had 4 strikeouts.

"I felt good," Wiltse said. "That's probably the best fastball I've had all season. I was able to locate it pretty well. They were super-aggressive, which helped me."

In the current season in 12 starts, Hooks Wiltse has a record of 8-1 with 48 strikeouts in 98 innings and a 2.85 ERA.

    Boston No Match For Joss
Tuesday, June 5th, 1906: Boston No Match for Joss
Addie Joss was in command in his outing against the Boston Americans. He hurled the Cleveland Naps to a 4-0 shutout victory, yielded 4 hits and chalked up 4 strikeouts and no walks.

"A complete-game shutout. That's fun territory for me," he told reporters in the postgame interview. "I had good balance and mechanics and was able to keep the ball down. When I do that, good things happen."

This season Joss has compiled a 8-2 record with a 1.48 ERA.

Resilient Athletics Once Again Turn Back White Sox
South Side Park,Chicago,Ill.-With first place once again on the line, the Athletics and White Sox fought a spirited battle with Philadelphia coming out on top 5-4.The difference in the game was a four run 5th inning in which the Athletics got two big home runs from Chief Bender and Rube Oldring that turned a 1-1 game into a 5-1 Philadelphia advantage.Chicago would not go quietly though, scoring twice themselves in the 5th as well as once more in the eighth, but in the end it was all Chief Bender(11-1) who struck out Jiggs Donahue to end the game leaving the tying and winning runs stranded on 2nd and 3rd.Here's the box score.

Thursday, June 7th, 1906: Dundon, Leever Receive 2-Game Suspensions
After an intense confrontation, both the Beaneaters Gus Dundon and the Pirates Sam Leever were handed their punishments today. The league commissioner's office issued suspensions for an on-the-field conflict that occurred at a recent Boston-Pittsburgh game. Both players will miss 2 games as a result of their actions.

"Sometimes we go too far and have to pay the consequences," Gus Dundon commented later. "Hopefully cooler heads will prevail the next time we play."

This year Dundon has hit at a .400 pace and produced 5 RBIs, no home runs and scored 1 run.

Leever has posted a 8-2 record in 1906 with a 1.99 ERA. Teams are hitting .237 against him and he has rung up 32 strikeouts in 113 innings.

Lord's RBI Single In 8th Sinks Browns 5-4

Sportsman's Park,St.Louis Mo.-Rube Waddell wasn't at his best today and the Athletics have given better exhibitions of our great national game, but Rube and his teammates were good enough to win,and the victory will look just as good as a no-hit shutout come the Beginning of October. In one of the tightest struggles of the season, the A's time and again let the Browns back in the game with poor fielding that was exascerbated by Waddell's inability to get the big out when it was needed, but the end ,Rube got the one that counted when Branch Rickey flied out to center field ending the game with the tying run 90 feet away. Here's the box score.

          Pirates,Cardinals Make Deal
Friday, June 8th, 1906: Pirates, Cardinals Make Deal
The Pittsburgh Pirates swapped 28-year old left fielder Del Howard for 28-year old center fielder Homer Smoot of the Cardinals after what St. Louis officials would only characterize as "difficult" negotiations.

This season Howard has banged out 14 hits in 50 at-bats for a .280 average with no home runs. He is getting on base at a .321 pace and his totals also include 10 RBIs and 5 runs scored.

This year Smoot is batting .323 with 1 home run.

          Sparks Fashions Shutout Against Cincinnati
Friday, June 8th, 1906: Sparks Fashions Shutout Against Cincinnati
The Philadelphia Phillies posted a 4-0 shutout over Cincinnati today on the strength of a strong performance by Tully Sparks. The Phillies pitcher held the Reds to 5 hits while walking 2 and fanning 4 in the route-going win.

Thus far this season Sparks has posted a 4-8 record, started 13 games, struck out 54 batters in 113 innings and compiled a 2.71 ERA.

          Pittinger Whitewashes Brooklyn
Friday, June 8th, 1906: Pittinger Whitewashes Brooklyn
Togie Pittinger was in command in his outing against the Brooklyn Superbas. He hurled the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-0 shutout victory, yielded 4 hits and chalked up 5 strikeouts and 2 walks.

"A complete-game shutout. That's fun territory for me," he told reporters in the postgame interview. "I had good balance and mechanics and was able to keep the ball down. When I do that, good things happen."

In 11 starts this season Pittinger has notched a 4-7 record and a 2.86 ERA.

          Phillippe Whips Boston
Friday, June 8th, 1906: Phillippe Whips Boston
Deacon Phillippe put a hex on Boston in a sparkling 7-0 shutout performance, mesmerizing them on a 4-hit gem.

"I feel good physically," he said. "Everything's comfortable. You should pitch well when that's the case."

It was anything but comfortable for Boston.

"Phillippe used his changeup very well, very effectively," the opposing manager said. "He threw it in hitter's counts."

The Pittsburgh Pirates hurler fanned 2 and walked 3.

In 1906 Phillippe has compiled a 6-4 record with a 1.88 ERA in 13 starts.

            Athletics Fall In Heartbreaker 4-3
Sportsman's Park,St.Louis,Mo.-In one of the most exciting battles of the season, the St.Louis Browns defeated the Philadelphia Athletics 4-3 thanks to remarkable pitching by port side twirler Barney Pelty(8-4) and clutch hitting by short fielder Bobby Wallace.Wallace was a thorn in the side of A's pitcher Eddie Plank(6-6) all day, collecting 3 hits including an RBI double in the 4th as well as the game winning single in the 8th in four trips to the plate. As for Pelty, the locals couldn't have asked for more from "The Yiddish Curver" who allowed 8 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 3 for his 8th victory of the season. Here's the box score.

Athletics Blank Tigers 1-0 For Third Straight Shutout
Bennett Park,Detroit,Mi.-In one of the most bitterly contested pitchers' battles ever in Bennett Park,Athletics twirler Rube Waddell(11-2) outdueled Tigers boxman Kaiser Wilhelm(6-6) 1-0 thanks to a Socks Seybold RBI fielder's choice in the top of the first inning that scored young Eddie Collins who singled to start the game. From there,it was all pitching with Waddell allowing just 3 hits and striking out 7 while Wilhelm, slightly less impressive, allowed 6 hits for the game. For Detroit, who now stand at 20-31,today's game was a much needed morale booster as they await the imminent return from injury of their two best players in Ty Cobb and Wahoo Sam McDowell who if all goes well will return this week,as for the Athletics, they'record now stands at 34-19,good enough tp pace the competitive American League. Here's the box score

Wednesday, June 13th, 1906: Eddie Collins out of Lineup, Listed DTD
Eddie Collins, the talented Philadelphia star, suffered a concussion yesterday in the game with the Tigers, which could keep him out of today's lineup. "I'm a bit banged up," said the 19-year-old shortstop, "but we won't know until game time if I can play or not." Collins got hurt while running the bases. The team doctor said he could be out up to one week.

A look at his 1906 stats shows Collins with a .365 average, 1 home run, 16 RBIs and 36 runs scored. He has played in 50 games.

Wednesday, June 13th, 1906: Hess Tames Highlanders
In an almost effortless performance, Otto Hess of the Naps shot down the Highlanders 4-0 on a 6-hit shutout.

His skipper said, "Otto was just locating so well and using his pitches... not leaving anything over the plate."

Hess recorded 5 strikeouts and 1 walk in a strong outing.

In the postgame press conference, the New York manager said, "When he needed to make pitches, he elevated his game like he can and we couldn't get a key hit off him."

Looking at his season stats, Hess has won 8 and lost 5, collecting 60 strikeouts and 31 walks in 116.2 innings with a 2.16 ERA.

Athletics Defeat Tigers 4-2 As Cobb Finally Makes Season Debut
Bennett Park,Detroit,Mi.-Despite the return of star suburbanite Ty Cobb, the Detroit Tigers could not solve the riddles thrown at them by the leagues best twirler as they fell to Chief Bender(13-1) and the Athletics by the score of 4-2. When asked about the season he's had so far,Bender made it quite clear as to why he thinks he's been so successful "My mates have been behind me 100%,they hit and field better than any team in the league, which makes my job really easy".So far this season,Bender has been absolutely amazing as he's compiled a 13-1 record with 12 CG's and 2 shutouts,he has an ERA of 1.88, a WHIP of .97 and 63 strikeouts against only 18 walks. Here's the box score.

                        Pirates Karger To Miss Year
Thursday, June 14th, 1906: Pirates Karger to Miss Year
The doctors have spoken and Ed Karger of the Pittsburgh Pirates didn't like what he heard. The 23-year-old starting pitcher is almost certainly gone for the rest of the year and depending on his progress could miss some of next season as well. Karger sustained his season-ending injury during the Brooklyn Superbas game yesterday at Exposition Park. He had to leave the game because he hurt himself while throwing a pitch. Today the Pittsburgh medical staff reported Karger had bone chips in his elbow and would be absent from the lineup for at least 13 months.

So far this season Karger has 6 wins and 4 losses and a 2.60 ERA.

Monday, June 18th, 1906: NL Player of Week: New York's Ames
Red Ames seems to put youthful exuberance into every pitch he throws and last week he threw up numbers that even the oldest of veterans would look at with envy. That's why the 23-year-old hurler was chosen the National League Player of the Week Award.

Ames notched 2 wins for the New York Giants. He finished the week with 13 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.00 while holding the opposition to a .175 average.

So far this season Ames has compiled a 4-3 record with a 2.76 ERA.

Frank Delahanty demonstrated his potential to be a star in the game last week and today he took home the American League Player of the Week Award.

The New York left fielder wreaked havoc on opposing pitchers last week, pounding them for a .500 average (13-26) with no home runs and 0 RBIs on his way to claiming the honor.

To date Delahanty has chalked up a .288 average with no home runs, driven in 14 runs and scored 29 times.
