HB George Davis (18att,172yds,td) | HB Perry Booker (13att,117yds,td) | QB Brad Brown (172yds,2td-4int,56%)

    DECISION BY TKO
Iowa State knocks out Spartans in round two, now 3-0 heading into Big 12 play

San Jose, CA- It wasn’t quite as bad as the 55-0 beat down the Cyclones put on the Spartans back in ’59 but it sure looked like it was going to get that way however some second-half sportsmanship shown by Coach Mitchell halted that potential outcome.

Iowa State (3-0) was slow to get going only putting up 7 first quarter points but just 11 seconds into the second quarter the flood gates opened and Iowa State went on a 42-7 run which all got started when HB Perry Booker broke loose on a 64-yard touchdown run putting the Cyclones up 14-0.

Iowa State’s offense wasn’t the only one to have fun at the Spartans expense as the defense and special teams units scored 27 of the Cyclones 48 total points.

“It was a total team effort,” said Coach Mitchell. “All three phases were clicking tonight, so much so that our second teamers played the entire second half as there was no need to leave our starters in up by 32 points going into half time, we didn’t want to risk injury, we need everybody healthy if we want to achieve our goals.”

For the second week in a row Iowa State’s first-team defense was dominant, limiting the Spartans to just 131 yards of total offense and 6 points in the first half before giving way to the second stringers in the second half.

“The defense again played outstanding,” said defensive coordinator Norm Parker, who was stolen from rival Iowa when Coach Mitchell took the reigns at Iowa State prior to the 2014 season. “They’re playing fast and loose, hopefully that’s more about us rather than the level of competition we’re playing…only time will tell though.”

San Jose State (0-3) shot themselves in the foot again and again…and again and again as QB Brad Brown threw 4 interceptions, 2 returned for touchdowns and the other 2 came inside the red-zone on first down.

“It was just one of those days,” said Brown. “Once we got down by three touchdowns I started forcing passes to guys that weren’t open and you can’t do that against any team, especially a team on the rise like Iowa State.”

One thing the Spartans had going for them was their running game which got hot just about three quarters too late as HB George Davis carried the ball 18 times for 172 yards and one touchdown, however 106 of those 172 yards came against Iowa State’s second-team defense in the second half – 84 on a breakaway run with 2:12 left in the fourth quarter.

        QB Maurice Fuqua (189yds,57%,3td-3int) | Neb D forced 3 Cyclone turnovers (3fum) | HB Joe Chase (98yds,10att,td,lng60)

QB Jack Boley (133yds,92%,3td-0int) | Dwayne Washington INT off the laces of W.Holt | DT Ryan White (3tkl,3tfl,2sck)

        WHAT THE FUQ' WENT WRONG
Iowa State knocks off Nebraska in Big 12 opener thanks to 3 Maurice Fuqua interceptions leading to 17 Cyclone points

Lincoln, NE- Iowa State did just enough to hold on in the final minutes to preserve their first victory in Lincoln, Nebraska since the 2000 season when they defeated the Huskers 33-26.

Iowa State (4-0, 1-0) looked completely over-matched early as two fumbles, one by HB Ray Whitlock and another by FS William Holt on a kickoff return, had them looking up at a 14-point deficit mid-way through the second quarter.

“Things looked bleak,” said QB Jack Boley. “We really were struggling against a tough Nebraska defense and nothing we tried on offense seemed to work but Coach Mitchell never looked shaken or rattled which really helped us to keep our confidence level up.”

That confidence helped get Iowa State back into the game as a 53-yard touchdown pass to WR Alex Montgomery and a 1-yard touchdown run by QB Jack Boley, which was set up courtesy of a Joey Williams pick of QB Maurice Fuqua, tied the game up at 21 going into half-time.

The fourth quarter was when the wheels fell off for the Huskers as junior QB Maurice Fuqua threw two-straight interceptions leading to all 10 Iowa State fourth quarter points.

Out of the 135 total plays that were ran between these two teams the biggest play came on a touchdown that was negated due to a personal foul facemask call with 3:27 left in the fourth quarter.

Up by 8 points Iowa State was on the Nebraska 49-yard line looking to go up by two scores when Iowa State HB Ray Whitlock, who had already fumbled earlier in the game, was stripped by DT Matt Fletcher, the ball was then picked up by OLB Byrce Gold who rumbled his way 61 yards to the house pulling the Huskers to within 2 at 35-33. However a 15-yard face mask penalty on that very strip by DT Matt Fletcher called the play back giving Iowa State better field position and negating Gold’s 61-yard scoop and score.

“When I saw Whitlock get stripped my heart sank,” said Mitchell. “Then to see Gold run down the field without any resistance and score made me think to myself, this isn’t happening, no way did we just give them an opportunity to tie the game up on yet anther fumble. Then I saw the flag on the field and I thought either this is a holding penalty on the run back which allows them to keep possession of the ball or this is a face mask by the way I saw Whitlock go down, luckily for us it was the facemask which allowed us to keep the ball and actually gain field position and eventually burn up some more clock.”

Nebraska’s 3-point loss drops them to 0-3 and 0-1 in the Big 12, the last time Nebraska started out 0-3 was back in 1943 when Adolph J. Lewandowski was head coach and the program actually had to cancel a game due to wartime travel restrictions.

          WR Alex Montgomery (3 rec,67 yds, td) | HB Perry Booker (18 att,2 rec,108 tot.yds,3 tot.td)

          WAS THERE EVEN A QUESTION
Baylor found themselves completely outmatched in 38-0 curb stomp at Jack Trice.

Ames, IA- Usually when a team looks at their upcoming schedule and they start checking off games as wins it almost always comes back to haunt them...unless that team your checking off as a win is the Baylor Bears.

The facts to backup that statement are overwhelming in favor of Baylor’s opponent especially when that opponent is in the Big 12. Since the 2009 version of Coach Mitchell’s coaching career began previous to the start of the 2008 season Baylor has won exactly 3…let me write that again, Baylor has won exactly 3 Big 12 conference games in 50 tries as they currently sit right now. In those 50 games they have been outscored by Big 12 opponents 2,367 to 931 which boil’s down to being outscored by nearly 40 points a game. The conclusion I would make off those types of facts would be if you’re a Big 12 team then beating the lowly Baylor Bears is a 5-star lock, without a doubt in my mind.

Baylor (0-4, 0-2) was shutout for the second-straight time the Cyclones and two biggest reasons as to why that happened, 2-12 on third down and just 23 yards rushing on 26 attempts.

The only aspect of Baylor’s game that looked like they belonged in ranks of all the other FBS teams was their defensive line which bent but didn’t break as they forced 7 tackles for a loss, one sack and held Iowa State’s running game to only, I use the word only rather loosely in this case, 103 yards on 30 carries which breaks down to 3.4 yard per carry.

Iowa State (5-0, 2-0) has continued to shine on not only the offensive side of the ball but also the defensive side of the ball which has been the most surprising aspect of their game as of yet holding the Bears to a season low 162 yards on the 42 plays in which they ran on the afternoon.

“As long as they keep playing the way they are then I will need to talk about them every week,” said Coach Mitchell. “Usually my defense are crap I can’t deny that, I figured out how to build a juggernaut of an offense but in my 6 years of playing NCAA I have yet to figure out how or what to look for when building a suffocating defense. However when my underclassmen are the ones making the most noise on the defensive side of the ball maybe I’ve finally stumbled upon something that will work for me in the future.”

Iowa State’s defense is ranked 37th overall and is ranked 4th in turnover differential with a +7.

Iowa State’s true sophomore QB Jack Boley’s decision making continues to be top notch as his streak of zero interceptions on the year continues as he’s now gone 63 pass attempts without a turnover. On the year he’s completed 77 percent of his passes for 621 yards and 7 touchdowns.

“For a true sophomore he’s really coming into his own,” said Mitchell. “Last year he was thrown to the wolves and he still managed to get us to six wins, unfortunately he also had a hand in all six of our losses but this year he’s an asset no longer a liability, you can mark it down, by the time he’s a senior he’s going to be one of the highest rated QB’s in the nation.”

              CINDERELLA SEASON CONTINUES
ISU 7-point victory against Tigers breaks them into Top 25 and secure atop the Big 12 North.

Columbia, MO- Iowa State’s spectacular year of firsts continued Saturday afternoon when they mustered up just enough offense to take down rival Missouri 24-17 in the final seconds.

The final touchdown drive which began with 1:05 remaining in the game was set up by impact true freshman FS William ‘The Jolt’ Holt’s 2nd interception of QB Brennan Henry. Holt, who missed a little over three quarters of the game with a strained shoulder, returned just 1-play prior to his second but most significant interception of Henry, who prior to Saturday threw just 1 interception in the past 5 games. The pick which happened on the Missouri 20-yard line was then ran back 15 yards to the 5-yard line setting the Cyclones up with great field position and an opportunity to get nothing less than 3 points.

“The guy is absolutely unbelievable,” said Coach Mitchell. “He has already made more of an impact on this team then I would have ever imagined him making. His knowledge of the position is outstanding, he knows where to be, when to be there, and how to break up a play before I think the ball is even snapped, it’s remarkable, I’ve never seen a player at that position be so good…and I’ve been coaching for quite awhile.”

After 3-straight running plays off the right side and a second down holding penalty on TE Robert Heard the Cyclones switched things up and ran off the left side where on third down and goal from the 3-yard line HB Perry Booker found nothing but green turf as he scampered in for the 3-yard touchdown run and eventual game-winning touchdown run which snapped Missouri’s 8-game winning streak over the Cyclones and propelled Iowa State to their first 6-0 start since 1938.

“You want to see the definition of a team, go watch us on Saturday’s,” said Coach Mitchell. “We’re a team, not a bunch of individuals but a cohesive unit working towards the same goal…every player is playing for the guy next to him, not himself…that’s why we’ve experienced the level of success we have this year. Coughcough or the fact that we’ve played an extremely weak schedule or the fact we play in the North division but that’s beside the point coughcough.”

Iowa State’s 6-0 record may also be the product of them being ranked 5th in the nation in takeaways with a +9 turnover differential. Last season when the Cyclones finished the season 6-6 their turnover differential was a -8, 21 giveaways to only 13 takeaways, this season they only have 6 giveaways but 15 takeaways. In those 15 takeaways thus far Iowa State has capitalized on 9 of them resulting in 45 Cyclone points while the opposition has only capitalized on 3 of Iowa State’s 6 turnovers resulting in only 17 points.

The victory against Missouri wasn’t all grand as the Cyclones watched their leader and signal caller QB Jack Boley go down with just 1:40 remaining in the game with a bruised shoulder after a bone jarring hit by MLB Chase Harrell, the injury will sideline Boley for next weeks homecoming game against the 1-5 Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Thanks man, meeting up in a bowl game would be awesome but we'll just have to wait and see how things shake out at the end of the year...

                    WANTED: CPU A.I.
Cowboys fall victim of poor CPU play calling, fall by 3 in defensive showcase.

Ames, IA- Oklahoma State and the two-headed monster that is Robert King and Stan Kittrell did their best to derail Iowa State’s homecoming festivities but found themselves on the losing end of a tough, hard fought 13-10 defensive battle.

“We should have lost today,” said Coach Mitchell emphatically after the game. “I had a bad feeling coming into this game and if Oklahoma State would’ve stuck with their running game and not decided to put the game in Matt Moore’s hands then I have no doubt we would’ve come out on the losing end, actually I would’ve preferred it…I hate winning the way we did.

“We won not because we were the better team but because the CPU play calling decided to forfeit Oklahoma State’s chances of winning thus giving us the easy W.”

Iowa State (7-0, 4-0) looked ordinary at best against the Big 12 South’s 6th place team, a team that has only managed to win one lowly game this season.

The Cyclones managed to gain only 216 yards of total offense while just 87 of those yards came on the ground from a running game which is use to producing nearly 145 yards per outing. It wasn’t like the Cowboys were some defensive juggernaut as their defense came into Saturday ranked 96th nationally with a rush defense which gives up an average of 170 yards per game.

Much to the surprise of Coach Mitchell and the entire offense true sophomore QB Jack Boley, who had been listed as doubtful for another week with a bruised shoulder after taking a vicious shot from Missouri’s Chase Harrell, was the one running out to the huddle not Luke Day when the offense took the field, I’m sure he wished he would’ve stayed on the sideline after being blitzed, pressured, hit and sacked throughout the entire first half as Boley went into the locker room completing only 3-of-7 passes for 65 yards and sacked 3 times.

“They were the best defense we’ve faced all year I don’t care what they were ranked,” said sophomore quarterback Jack Boley. “They beat us up and shut us down all afternoon, no matter what play we threw at them they seemed to have an answer for it…thank god for Michael Williams.”

True freshman punter/place kicker Michael Williams booted through two second half field goals for the Cyclones with the biggest coming from 52 yards out with 3:45 remaining to put the Cyclones up 13-10.

Down by only three points and plenty of time remaining on the clock the Cowboys had more than enough time to methodically drive the length of the field via the running game which was producing nearly 7 yards per rush and if nothing else settle for a game tying Thomas Cole field goal, however that would make far to much sense so instead the CPU chose to throw three-straight 40-yard bombs down the sideline which consequently were broken up resulting in a three and out.

From there all Iowa State needed to walk away with their seventh win on the season was two first downs which they were able to get courtesy of five-straight Perry Booker rushes.

Iowa State’s 3-point win over the Cowboys gives this program its first ever 7-0 start and first secure bowl bid since the 2008-2009 season.

QB Justin Bates (hit 5x, sacked 2x) | WR Kyle Horne (3rec, 101yds, td)

                        HELLO…HELLO…, HI, THIS IS DESTINY
MAY I SPEAK WITH IOWA STATE PLEASE?

Iowa State miraculously keeps their perfect season and BCS dreams in tact with 7-point win in the home of 12th man.

College Station, TX- So there’s absolutely no way underrated and overlooked Iowa State goes into College Station and beats the almighty No. 3 Texas A&M Aggies right? Wrong! How the Cyclones continue to do to pull off the improbable we’ll never really know but sometimes when it’s your time...it’s your time.

The way the stars have aligned for Coach Mitchell and the Iowa State Cyclones are getting down right freaky as there is a possibility, if things continue down the road they’re on, that not only Iowa State could be in the BCS national championship game, which would end up being one of the most unlikeliest opponents in a national championship game that we’ve even seen but their opponent could end up being Coach Mitchell’s previously built team, the Kentucky Wildcats…could this even be happening?? I think I’m playing this season out in the twilight zone.

“I have no idea how in the hell we’re 8-0 right now,” said Coach Mitchell astonished. “This has been one of the best…most confusing…most outstanding…most shocking years of coaching I’ve ever been apart of, and I’ve been to the mountain top with Wyoming and won a national championship and this team and season has blown all the others out of the water.

“The way this team plays is unlike anything I’ve ever seen, they play SO fundamentally sound it’s incredible, from the offense to the defense to the special teams unit, they all play well above their skill level…we haven’t been the most talented team to take the field in over half of our games but we’re the most together sound units you’ll ever see…we just don’t really make any mistakes, unlike last year. As you can tell I am absolutely flabbergasted at just how good this team is over any team I’ve put together or won with…and I don’t know how!

“We don’t have a Brandon Powell in the backfield or a Chris Johnson on the outside or a Ray Lewis on the defense, our most talented kid on the defense is true freshman FS William ‘The Jolt’ Holt, don’t get me wrong he’s an absolutely outstanding player but one man can’t do it all himself, we just have a lot of good players that play smart, maybe that trumps a bunch of Rivals.com 150 players who knows, but this may change the way I recruit players from now on that’s for sure.”

It’s not like the No. 3 Texas A&M Aggies were shut down on offense because they weren’t, they came into Saturday night averaging 420 yards of offense per game and they only fell 36 yards shy of the mark. The biggest difference was their point total which previously stood at 42 points per game and the Cyclone defense held them to a measly 13.

Maybe their defense was to blame but giving up only 76 yards more than they had averaged giving up all season isn’t really that much, especially when you figure 79 yards of Iowa State’s offense came off one pass play to WR Alex Montgomery which resulted in a touchdown and a 13-point lead for the Cyclones in the second quarter.

The Aggies did end up erasing a portion of the Cyclones 13-point lead prior to half time however with two Ryan Jackson field goals making the score 13-6 going in the intermission.

But stopping impact WR Alex Montgomery proved to be easier said than done as Boley again hooked up with the offensive captain mid-way through the third quarter on a 23-yard post play extending Iowa State’s lead back out to 13 points.

Alex Montgomery finished the game with career high 125 yards on 5 catches and two touchdowns.

The Aggies never gave up though as Heisman hopeful Justin Bates found WR Kyle Horne for a 59-yard touchdown catch and run just 44 seconds and two plays after Montgomery’s touchdown catch which again slimmed the Cyclones lead back down to seven, a lead Iowa State would never surrender.

The Aggies had two chances late to get the rock into the end zone and tie the game up but both times the Cyclones defense stood strong holding the Aggies out of the end zone and off the scoreboard.

The first of which took place with 2:17 remaining and Texas A&M facing a 4th and goal from the Iowa State 3-yard line. After three-straight unsuccessful running plays head coach Mike Sherman decided to let Justin Bates throw a fade to the corner of the end zone to his favorite receiver Kyle Horne but as Bates let go of the ball 6’5” DT Ryan Lindsay stuck his big ole paw in the air and swatted the pass away.

The Aggies second and final chance came after A&M’s third down stop of HB Perry Booker with 56 seconds remaining on the Iowa State 13-yard line. After a 38-yard punt by Michael Williams and a 3-yard return by WR Rodney Richard the Aggies started their last minute drive on the Iowa State 48-yard line, equipped with no timeouts in their back pocket the Aggies were forced to move down the field quickly, unfortunately for them they didn’t move quite as quickly as they needed to as a touchdown saving tackle by SS Dwayne Washington of TE Matt DeLuca on the 20-yard line as time expired sent the Aggies fans home with a shocking 7-point loss, a loss the A&M faithful were not used to experiencing, not at Kyle Field anyway as the Cyclones snapped A&M’s 20-game home winning streak.

“I don’t think I can say anything more without sounding redundant,” said Coach Mitchell. “I can say is…wow, this is why we love this great game called football, between those white lines anything can happen…and often does. What a difference a year makes huh, last year we were fighting, scratching, and clawing our way to enough wins to get bowl eligible and this year we might have a shot at a BCS game or better yet a national title…I think my brain is going to explode any minute now because there is no way this is really happening.”

The Cyclones will look to continue the improbable roll their on next week at home when the take on the 3-5, 1-4 Kansas State Wildcats.

K-State defense gets familiar with Perry Booker and company in 20-point loss to Cyclones

AMES, Iowa- As the pressure mounts with every play for Iowa State and their pursuit of the programs first ever National Title birth, Coach Mitchell was not about to put the ball in the air for sake of “style” points just to impress the voters.

“We haven’t gotten this far worrying about what the “country” thinks of us and whether of not this team would be a worthy BCS opponent, we don’t care about flash, and we certainly don’t care about venturing outside of our comfort zone just to impress the fat cats and the pollsters, all we care about is who has the most points on the scoreboard when the clock reads triple zero and so far that has worked out extremely well for us. We’re a blue collar, lunch pail type of team, we make our living running the ball and wearing down defenses, you know when you play us you better be physical and ready to play all sixty-minutes.”

Iowa State (9-0, 6-0) ran the ball 38 times for 181 yards and three touchdowns, Perry Booker ran for 149 of those yards and scored 1 touchdown in three quarters of play before getting the rest of the day off prior to the fourth quarter.

Booker set the tone mid-way through first quarter with a 71-yard touchdown run giving the Cyclones a 10-3 lead only 19 seconds after Kansas State kicker Andrae Lamb tied the game up at 3 with a 26-yard field goal.

“After Booker broke loose on that 71-yard touchdown run I knew it was over, said Coach Mitchell. “I don’t normally like to say a games a win until the final seconds tick off clock but as soon as I saw Booker running down the sideline I knew it was over, Kansas State’s 120th ranked defense wasn’t going to be able to stop us.”

Kansas State (3-6, 1-5) got a late 31-yard touchdown catch by senior offensive captain Kody Atkins making the score 30-10.

Atkins finished the afternoon with 4 catches for 68 yards and 1 touchdown.

“Whenever you can knock off a Big 12 conference opponent it’s a great win but I think every win from here on out is going to be gigantic,” said Coach Mitchell. “I mean we’re in uncharted territories here, this program has never seen this type of success.”

Iowa State must get over this win quick and get ready for the 7-2 Colorado Buffaloes next week in an ABC prime time match-up. The Buffaloes look to be the biggest obstacle the Cyclones still have left on their schedule, a loss next week and it might ‘blow’ the Cyclones not only out of the Big 12 title picture but also out of the BCS bowl picture.

                              DEFYING LOGIC
Cyclones squeak by resilient Buffaloes, stamp their ticket to first ever Big 12 Championship Game.

AMES, Iowa- Forever looked at as a mediocre or one of the bottom feeders in the Big 12 conference the Iowa State Cyclones continued to defy all logic and expectations Saturday night as they stamped the Big 12 North’s ticket to the 2015 Big 12 Championship Game which will take place in Kansas City, Missouri at the end of December.

Iowa State (10-0, 7-0) faced arguably the Big 12 North’s stingiest defense in the Colorado Buffaloes, who came in allowing only 93 yards per game on the ground and only 270 yards total, the Buffs defense wouldn’t disappoint. Colorado held the Cyclones to their lowest offensive output all season, 154 yards with only 58 of those coming via the ground game.

Colorado head coach Dan Hawkins knew the only way his team had a chance at pulling off the upset was to slowdown Perry Booker and Alex Montgomery, the Cyclones biggest offensive weapons.

“I knew if we could suffocate their ground game Coach Mitchell would be forced to air it out which would basically mean finding WR Alex Montgomery, the Cyclones biggest outside threat,” said Hawkins. “Well we were able to execute that game plan perfectly and somehow they still ended up winning, I don’t know how in the hell you beat that team. If you look at them on film or paper they look rather pedestrian yet they continue to find ways to beat you, whether it’s with their defense or their special teams…or their passing game…or their running game…they just refuse to lose, good luck to anyone that has to play them because those guys are deceptively good.”

HB Perry Booker was limited to being merely a decoy in the running game, rushing for 59 yards on 21 carries for an average rush of 2.8 yards. However, he was QB Jack Boley’s saving grace in the passing game catching 6 passes for 76 yards and one huge touchdown just 3 seconds prior to the first half ending which put the Cyclones up 10-7 going in the intermission.

Booker needed to be Boley’s safety valve in the passing game as Colorado rendered WR Alex Montgomery useless in the passing game, holding Montgomery to only 3 catches for 1-yard and 2 of the Cyclones 4 total drops on the evening.

Nearing the mid-way point through the fourth quarter only up by six points and both teams trading three and outs for most of the night Coach Mitchell knew if the Cyclones were going to hang on and keep their undefeated streak going they were going to need someone to step up big and make a play. No sooner did that thought go through his mind and true freshman FS William ‘The Jolt’ Holt went flying by him and down the sideline on route to a 63-yard punt return touchdown giving the Cyclones a 19-7 lead with 3:31 left to play in the fourth quarter.

“I about pissed my pants when I saw him bust through the return lane and off to the races,” said Coach Mitchell. “I started to get so excited I nearly forgot to finish the play and consequently he nearly got hauled down before the goal line but luckily for us both he and the tackler’s momentum carried him past the goal line. We failed on the 2-point conversion try with FB Mark Jennings but I think at that point with how little time there was remaining it was as good as over.”

The Buffaloes would go on to get a late touchdown drive out of QB David Todd when he found Jabari Billings open on a 17-yard post route which he broke open for 43-yards pulling the Buffaloes to within 4 points at 19-14.

Iowa State would go on to dash any dreams the Buffaloes had of an up set bid on the ensuing onside kick when TE Robert Heard came out of the pile holding the ball thus keeping Iowa State’s hope for a perfect season alive.

Maybe the player most influential in the Cyclones 4-point victory is none other than true freshman punter/kicker Michael Williams, who connected on both of his field goal attempts with his longest coming from 49 yards out in the third quarter. Williams also punted five times with three of those five punts being downed inside the 10-yard line.

“He was excellent,” said Mitchell. “Again its players like Williams stepping up and key moments in the game that has us positioned where we are.”

Iowa State looks to Lawrence, Kansas next week to avenge last years crushing 34-24 loss at the hands of the Jayhawks, a loss that undoubtedly kept Iowa State out of the post season picture.

                                BIG 12 DOMINATION
Iowa State finishes of their regular season Big 12 schedule 8-0 after a dominating 45-point performance in Lawrence.

LAWRENCE, Kansas- Iowa State’s 10-point loss to the Jayhawks last year was combination of inconsistency, penalties, turnovers, and a total lack of focus shown by the Cyclones, that was not the case this year.

Iowa State (11-0, 8-0) jumped all over the less than formidable Jayhawks early and often putting up 28 points before Kansas (2-9, 1-7) even smelt the red-zone for the first time.

“Everything clicked for us from the get-go,” said Coach Mitchell. “Our offense was like a hot knife slicing through butter…we could do no wrong.”

Don’t let the final score fool you into thinking this game was even remotely as close as the score might indicate, at one point, still in the first half, Iowa State had themselves a 42-7 lead, this game was well over before the fourth quarter and Kansas’s 24-to-3 run.

Iowa State senior captain WR Alex Montgomery had himself a career day, hauling in 5 catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns, all that in only one half of play as Coach Mitchell elected to pull all of his offensive and defensive starters at halftime.

Iowa State’s true freshman FS William ‘The Jolt’ Holt continued, yet again, to amaze as his body of work on the day included 6 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, 1 interception, 1 deflection, 7 total returns for 254 yards and 1 kick return touchdown in the second quarter which at that point gave the Cyclones a 35-7 lead.

“He is my defensive Brandon Powell,” Mitchell said. “One of those players that may only come along maybe once every five to seven years, the guys spectacular.”

Iowa State now gets a much deserved bye week before looking to finish off the regular season undefeated on November, 28th against the Pac-10’s last play team, the Washington State Cougars, who are currently 1-9.
