    Straight From the Coach
"Brandon Lloyd will be starting at the second WR spot, leaving Antonio Freeman at the third spot and bumping Tai Streets to the 4th WR slot. Now, just because Streets has been demoted to 4th does not mean he won't be an active part of this offense. He will definitely be expected to still perform and contribute when the situation calls for it."

      Re: Madden 2004: Goldmine

Week 01: Seattle (0-0) at San Francisco (0-0)
Over 70,000 fans were on hand to witness the regular season opening of The Goldmine. Capacity was estimated to be near 99%. The 49ers had a few new, rookie faces on defense, and you'd think Shaun Alexander, Darrel Jackson, and Koren Robinson would be enough to really test them. However, the fact that Seattle had a rookie Roderick Finley starting at QB over Seneca Wallace seemed to balance it out.

      1st Quarter
Seattle received the ball first, and although they were successful moving the ball, they stalled at SF's 32. Kicker Josh Brown was sent out to attempt a 49-yard field goal, which he missed wide right. Pumped up, the 49ers drove down the field in 7 plays, ending up in the endzone thanks to a 2-yard run by Kevan Barlow. This made it 7-0 and seemed to inspire the defense. Rookie QB Roderick Finley had a pass intercepted by Jason Webster which was brought back to Seattle's 29. It seemed like a prime position to set up a score, but on third down, Garcia was sacked and the Niners were forced to punt.

      2nd Quarter
After forcing the Seahawks to punt, San Francisco's offense got back on track. They soon found themselves at the 3 yard line of the Hawks. Here they introduced some trickery. Garcia pitched the ball to Barlow who ran left. Suddenly, before going upfield, he turned and through to Garcia in the endzone! A 3-yard pass FROM Barlow TO Garcia gave the 49ers a 14-0 edge.

      3rd Quarter
On the opening drive of the second half, the 49ers again were successful on a 10-play, 6:08 drive. This one ended with Garcia hitting Freeman on a 4-yard pass to make it 21-0. The rest of the quarter was purely defensive.

      4th Quarter
In the last quarter, Seattle's offense finally came to life a little bit. It started with a 9-play drive that ended with Roderick Finley finding a wide open receiver from 7 yards away to finally put the Hawks on the board. After forcing a punt, another drive, though shorter, also yielded a touchdown when the QB Roderick Finley hit rookie WR Cameron Perry. The score was 21-14 and all Seattle had to do was get a defensive stop but the Niners put the ball in the hands of Barlow and Beasley and were able to close out the game.

FINAL: SF opens The Goldmine with a 21-14 victory!

      Key Performances
QB Jeff Garcia - 87.0, 18/26, 190 yards, TD, INT - Rec, 3 yards, TD
      RB Kevan Barlow - 21 att, 96 yards, TD - 1 rec, 30 yards - 1/1, 3 yards, TD
TE Eric Johnson - 5 rec, 64 yards
WR Antonio Freeman - 4 rec, 39 yards, TD

      San Francisco 49ers: 1-0

            Re: Madden 2004: Goldmine

Week 2: San Francisco (1-0) at New Orleans (1-0)
The Saints... the team that has beaten the Niners twice in a row, the last time knocking them out of the playoffs. Some nice playing by rookie CB Drew Jones helped his team achieve an unexpected outcome.

            1st Quarter
New Orleans' first drive yieled a 24 yard field goal. The drive ate up 6 minutes of the quarter. The 49ers drive ate up the rest of the quarter. The drive ended with a 15-yard pass from Garcia to Freeman to give the Niners a 7-3 lead.

            2nd Quarter
The Niners forced a punt after some nice defensive plays. Their offense responded with another scoring drive that wound up with Kevan Barlow bursting into the endzone from 6 yards away. At 14-3, the Saints seemed to be a little demoralized already. Especially after Brooks was intercepted by rookie CB Drew Jones who returned the ball to the New Orleans 4. The New Orleans defense stood tall, however, and on 4th down a fake field goal by the Niners was unsuccessful. It left the Saints on their own 1 yard line, though, and on the next play Julian Peterson caught Deuce McAllister in the endzone for a safety, making it 16-3. The 49ers offense was forced to punt, but it did little for the Saints as they too were forced to punt. CB Drew Jones, the new return man, took the punt at the 15 yard line and ran it all 85 yards for the touchdown to give San Francisco a nice 23-3 lead.

            3rd Quarter
On the first drive of the second half, kicker Jeff Chandler added a 25-yard field goal. On the following drive by New Orleans, Brooks fumbled at their own 11 and on the next play, Garcia found WR Brandon Lloyd for the 11 yard strike to make it 33-3.

            4th Quarter
Midway through the quarter, Aaron Brooks finally got the Saints a TD by hitting WR Talman Gardner for a 39-yard score. Another 26-yard field goal by Chandler made it 36-10 and this is how the score would stay.

FINAL: San Francisco pulls off 36-10 victory over Saints.

            Player of the Game
Rookie CB Drew Jones - 3 tackles, 4 Pass Def, INT - Punt return TD

            Key Performances
            QB Jeff Garcia - 90.1, 14/28, 152 yards, 2 TD
RB Kevan Barlow - 22 att, 133 yards, TD - Rec, 9 yards
WR Terrell Owens - 5 rec, 56 yards
WR Brandon Lloyd - 4 rec, 49 yards, TD

            San Francisco 49ers: 2-0

                  Re: Madden 2004: Goldmine

Week 04: Arizona (2-0) at San Francisco (2-0)
Up to this point, San Fran had handled both Seattle and New Orleans. Surely Arizona didn't pose a threat with QB Chris Young starting with only 1 year of experience... right?

                  1st Quarter
San Francisco got the ball first and took 11 plays to get down the field before Garcia hit Owens for a 3 yard touchdown. Arizona ate up most of the rest of the quarter, but were forced to punt.

                  2nd Quarter
Another drive found the Niners at the one yard line. Garcia rolled out and hit Owens on an out route to give San Francisco a 14-0 lead. After forcing another punt, it appeared the Niners were pumped up and possibly on their way to another score. That is, until Barlow fumbled away the ball at the 49ers' 40. This led to Chris Young hitting rookie TE John Osborne for a 6-yard score. Arizona's defense was pumped up and forced a 3 and out much to the chagrin of the SF crowd. Young led them on another scoring drive, finally finding WR Bryant Johnson for the 25-yard score to tie it up at 14. At this point there were two minutes left. After a few plays, Garcia hit Owens for a 50+ yard pass. A couple of runs helped drain the clock and then Garcia hit TE Eric Johnson for a 25-yard score to give San Fran back a 21-14 lead with just 24 seconds left.

                  3rd Quarter
Arizona took the ball first in the second half and in a 6-miunte, 11-play drive, were able to again find paydirt as Marcell Shipp took it in from the 4 to tie it up at 21. Late in the quarter, Chandler got the lead back again for the Niners 24-21.

                  4th Quarter
Early on, Young was intercepted by Drew Jones who made it back to Arizona's 5 yard line before being tackled. San Francisco failed to score, however, as Garcia threw a rocket into the hands of an Arizona defender who got it to the 15 yard line. The Cardinals drove to the 37, and then they tried a 54-yard field goal but Gramatica's kick was wide left. After San Francisco had to punt, Arizona got another chance, and one play was all it took. Chris Young hooked up with Bryant Johnson. Drew Jones misjudged the ball and was caught totally out of position, allowing Johnson to go 88 yards untouched and give Arizona a 28-24 lead. Another Gramatica field goal made it 31-24. San Francisco's offense couldn't move the ball and had to punt. Desperate, their D came up big by forcing a three and out with just over a minute left. Drew Jones became a short-term hero, returning the punt 47 yards for a score to tie it at 31-31 and we were heading to overtime!

                  Overtime
Arizona won the toss and were able to exploit holes in the secondary on their way to the 22 yard line. Once their drive stalled, Gramatica hit a 39 yard field goal to seal the unsuspected victory.

FINAL: San Francisco stunned in OT by Arizona 34-31!

                  Key Performances
                  QB Jeff Garcia - 77.5, 16/23, 238 yards, 3 TD, 2 INT
RB Kevan Barlow - 15 att, 83 yards
WR Terrell Owens - 8 rec, 138 yards, 2 TD

                  San Francisco: 2-1

                  Next Game: @ Seahawks (0-3)

Up to this point, San Fran had handled both Seattle and New Orleans. Surely Arizona didn't pose a threat with QB Chris Young starting with only 1 year of experience... right?

San Francisco bounced back from their depressing loss to Arizona with a 27-17 win. Garcia threw for over 400 yards as well as 1 touchdown and 1 interception. The game was somewhat costly, as there were two injuries: Scott Gragg is expected to miss at least 4 weeks with hip bursitis and Terrell Owens is out at least one week with a strained back.

                              Week 6: Jacksonville (1-4) @ San Francisco (3-1) - MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

                              1st Quarter
On the opening drive of the game, Jacksonville's offense sputtered quickly and they had to punt it away. This was basically an example of how they would play the rest of the game. As for the 49ers, they found the endzone on their first drive of the game when Garcia found Brandon Lloyd for a 5-yard score.

                              2nd Quarter
The tide almost turned in Jacksonvilles favor when Bryant got ahold of one of Garcia's passes and returned it all the way to tie the game at 7. Garcia even threw two more consecutive interceptions, but remained in the game. The San Francisco held strong and allowed 0 points off of those turnovers. With just over two minutes to play, Garcia rocketed a pass to Owens who took it and broke a few tackles en route to a 27-yard score. It was 14-7 at the half.

                              3rd Quarter
The only action this quarter saw besides on the defensive side of the ball was Barlow punching it from the 2.

                              4th Quarter
Garcia threw two more touchdowns, one to Eric Johnson and another to Brandon Lloyd as the 49ers continued to steamroll the Jaguars.

Final: SF looks good on Monday night winning 35-7.
