      Re: Madden 2004: Goldmine

Any ideas on how to handle the Garcia situation? I want to release him but don't want to take the cap hit (1.84 mil)... but he wastes a roster spot.

And I don't know why you can't trade a hold out. Seems a hold out would ASK to be traded. Suggestions?

Week 1: Seattle (0-0) at San Francisco (0-0)
The new season begins where the previous one left ended. Let's just say Seneca welcomed his former team to his new home.

            1st Quarter
On the first drive of the game, Seattle had to punt after the San Fran defense caught Shaun Alexander for a short loss on 3rd & 2. San Francisco's offense got rolling, except for the running game, and eventually Seneca hit TE Eric Johnson for a 32-yard score. For the rest of the quarter, both teams traded punts. Surprisingly, Barlow was held to just 6 yards on 7 carries in the first quarter. Keep that stat in mind.

            2nd Quarter
Barlow came to life in the second quarter, getting the ball from the three yard line and putting it in the endzone to make the score 14-0. Seattle made it to the 33 yard line, but a 50-yard attempt by Brown fell short. The 49ers offense stalled quickly and had to give the ball back. With just under two minutes in the half, Roderick Finley hit Darrell Jackson for a 21 yard strike to cut the lead to 14-7. They left enough time on the clock, however, for the 49ers to get in range for a 29-yard field goal from Chandler, making it 17-7 at the half.

            3rd Quarter
On the opening drive of the quarter, San Francisco dink & dunked their way to the five yard line before Seneca Wallace hit Randle El on an out route for the score to up the score to 24-7.

            4th Quarter
Wild... wild quarter. After receiving a punt from the Seahawks, Seneca Wallace hit Barlow in the flats. Surprisingly, no defenders were to be found nearby and Barlow sped 43 yards into the endzone to make it 31-7. Seattle answered back with Koren Robinson on the receiving end of a 13 yard pass. Shaun Alexander punched it in for the two-point conversion. The Niners came back and made it to the three yard line, from which Wallace hit Johnson again. The score was now 38-15. After another Seattle punt was returned to the Seahawks' 45, Barlow seemed to just be getting started. On the first play of the drive, he broke two tackles and was off for a 45-yard touchdown run to give San Francisco an incredible 45-15 lead. In the few minutes that were left, Finley ended up throwing another touchdown pass to Koren Robinson, this one for 18 yards, but it was too little too late.

Final: San Francisco opens the season redeeming themselves with 45-22 win over Seattle!

            Player of the Game
            RB Kevan Barlow - 25 att, 125 yards, 2 TD - 3 rec, 57 yards, TD

            Key Performances
            QB Seneca Wallace - 110.1, 24/40, 338 yards, 4 TD, INT
WR Terrell Owens - 5 rec, 86 yards

            San Francisco 49ers: 1-0

            Next Game: vs Sharks (1-0)

Week 2: Los Angeles (1-0) at San Francisco (1-0)
The LA Sharks... formerly known as the Arizona Cardinals. They swept the 49ers last season, and SF was out for revenge!

                  1st Quarter
On the game's opening drive, Los Angeles looked like they were going to score after making their way to the redzone, but Ahmed Plummer turned around in the nick of time and intercepted a Chris Young pass in the endzone. Likewise, San Francisco found themselves in scoring position, but their hopes were ended when Seneca Wallace was intercepted at the Sharks' 18.

                  2nd Quarter
The Niners forced a punt after stopping RB Lamar Reed on 3rd & 3. They took the opportunity and marched down the field before Wallace connected with rookie WR Donald Evans for the 10 yard score. Following another punt by the Sharks, it only took one play to put up another touchdown as Barlow broke through an initial round of tacklers before speeding away for a 62-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0. There was 3:22 left on the clock. Two minutes and 6 seconds later, Los Angeles found themselves on the SF 33, and Bill Gramatica kicked a 50-yard attempt straight down the middle to get LA on the board. Two plays later, Wallace was intercepted again, this time at the SF 45. This allowed Gramatica to add a 36-yard field goal and make it 14-6 at the half.

                  3rd Quarter
On the first drive of the second half, the Sharks held San Francisco to a 3 & out. Chris Young then led the offense on a methodical drive down to the 1 before letting Lamar Reed punch it in. A pass to Bryant Johnson made for a successful two-point conversion, tying the game at 14. On the 49ers next drive, Seneca Wallace hit TE Eric Johnson who ran through one tackler and then went untouched the rest of the way on a 48-yard touchdown. Late in the quarter, DT Thomas Edwards recovered a fumble by Anquan Boldin at the LA 36.

                  4th Quarter
San Francisco converted the turnover into seven more points when Owens caught an 8-yard pass from Wallace. This made it 28-14. LA's offense struggled to move the ball and had to punt it away. WR Donald Evans caught a Seneca pass at midfield but then put it on the ground. Los Angeles ended up giving the ball back on a turnover on downs after failing to convert 4th & 9. With just over 4 minutes left, Wallace found Fred Beasley in the flats for a 13-yard score to finish off the Sharks.

Final: SF gets their revenge with 35-14 win over LA!

                  Player of the Game
                  QB Seneca Wallace - 101.7, 16/27, 269 yards, 4 TD, 2 INT

                  Key Performances
RB Kevan Barlow - 21 att, 132 yards, TD
WR (R) Donald Evans - 3 rec, 64 yards, TD

                  San Francisco 49ers: 2-0

Fan Support High, Garcia Still Sits
The latest win over Los Angeles has further increased San Francisco's fan support, which has been growing for the past few years. This has also led to increased attendance. It is estimated that attendance from the past two games has been between 97-99% of stadium capacity. This has led to high profits and good times for the San Francisco 49ers ownership.

Another popular issue is the fact that Jeff Garcia continues to hold out for a better contract, despite the team picking up Seneca Wallace and giving Ken Dorsey a new contract at the end of the previous year. "Well, it's up to Jeff. Obviously he is a very talented player, and it's unfortunate that his talents are wasting away on the bench. But, that's his choice. We've discussed this with him. We simply do not have the cap space to deal with his demands at the time, but that has had no effect on his decision to hold out. Luckily, Seneca has been filling in quite well in his absence. The more Wallace plays, the more impressed we become. It will make for an interesting off season at season's end." says Owner Donald McKee.

Week 3: Denver (1-1) at San Francisco (2-0)

                              1st Quarter
On the opening drive, San Francisco's offense finally got moving on 3rd & long when Seneca Wallace hit Eric Johnson for a 15-yard gain. After that, Barlow did the rest. Wallace tossed him the ball on a sweep and Barlow got around the corner to the outside and outran three Denver defenders en route to a 56-yard touchdown. The Broncos were not to be put away as their rookie QB Percy Sidney led them down the field with multiple passes to WR Caleb Roberts and a few nice runs by Clinton Portis. On 2nd & Goal, Portis found a hole and earned the touchdown, tying the game at 7.

                              2nd Quarter
The 49ers went down the field in their normal fashion and Wallace found Owens for a short 3-yard touchdown. One play was all it took for Denver to tie it once more. And with that play, Portis out-did Barlow for the time being with a 70-yard run of his own. San Francisco's offense was still going full-steam and from the 28 yard line, Barlow ran up the middle and found a gaping hole, allowing him to burst to paydirt, giving San Francisco back their lead 21-14. Jeff Chandler tried to add a 37-yard field goal before the half, but it went wide right.

                              3rd Quarter
After returning a Bronco's punt to the Denver 43, San Francisco had no problem once again setting themselves up for success. From the 2 yard line, Seneca Wallace held onto the ball himself, rushing in for the touchdown. A 31-yard field goal from Chandler upped the score to 31-14. The Niners defense forced another punt, but Drew Jones fumbled away the return at the San Francisco 36.

                              4th Quarter
The turnover by Jones set up Denver for a score and on 3rd & Goal from the 1, the 49ers guessed run, but QB Percy Sidney dropped back and found rookie back-up TE Leonardo Irving for the touchdown making it 31-21. With about 5 minutes left in the game, the Niners put the game away as Wallace threw a 4-yard out pass to Barlow in the back of the endzone.

Final: San Francisco sends Denver packing as they win 38-21!
