Re: Retro Redemption - Starting over with a oldschool PowerBone Offense (CFB2

    2025 - Week 11 & 12

    Patience Is Key

Army comes into this 7-2 and faces two 7 wins games in the next two games. The UTSA game was a tough one and they would do a great job vs our run game holding us to 3.1 yards per carry. It was a ugly game with Army up 10-7 with just 2 minutes to go in the game. It was 4th and goal at the 2 and Napier decides to go for it since at worst they are backed up and have no timeouts. After wasting a timeout to get the right play in Napier decides on a toss out of the power I. Hocker is a power back with speed (89) gets the call and at first we aren't sure if he got in or not. The refs rule he was in, and UTSA was mad because after replay we still aren't 100% sure if it was a TD. They end up hitting a long TD pass on the first play, but Army recovers the onside kick and hangs on 17 to 14.

Just 260 yards of total offense and it was about the same for them. Both teams struggled with 3rd down % in the mid 30's and 0 turnovers. Keyes was the top back 15 carries for 86 yards with the speedy Clerk 3 catches for 43 yards. FB Udoh was shut down on this one just 2.4 per on 14 carries. Vaughn and Small combined for 19 pancake blocks

    ------------------------------------------------

Army came into this game ranked #20. Patience was also key in this game after a fumble returned for a TD gave the bad guys (ECU) the lead. It was 14 to 0 and as we know this offense isn't built to come back from big leads. Freshman power HB Rachel scores a TD to cut the lead in half. Army would come back as Udoh scores on the ground to give Army a 24 to 21 lead. Army has the ball inside the 5 and gives it to the FB Udoh twice and he gets in on the 2nd one with under 2 minutes remaining. The defends picks off the 1st pass and Scheffler scores on the 1st play from 15 yards out. This game was much closer then the 38 to 21 final looked

The offense was rolling in this one and Army took advantage of the best C in the game vs a bad DT. It was 418 yards on the ground at 6.9 per carry. The 3rd down % was a lot better at 61%. The turnovers have been better of late with just the one fumble this game. FB Udoh was the star 19 carries for 113 yards and 3 TD. He earns the very rare conference player of the week. #2 HB Scheffler continues to play well 7 carries for 91 yards. Freshman Rachel was 8 for 65 with a TD and Small had 12 pancake blocks. Bolden just the game manager 100 total yards. ECU drops to 7-4

      2025 - Week 13

      Redemption vs Navy

Editor's note - the teams are swapped on the box score part, but mine will also be the one with OL listed

Last year's Navy game was a brutal loss a fumble in overtime on the way toward the game winning drive. This years game was never in doubt with Army up 28 to 7 at halftime. Navy with the big lead had to pass more then usual. We will admit to running the score up for the first time all year with a TD pass on the final play of the game with our 2nd unit in the game. A big win for the rest of the year as Army goes to 10-2 and still alive in the playoffs. We will have more on that soon.

It seems to be HB by committee and this game it was the speed senior HB Omari Embree's time to shine. He goes for over 130 yards and 2 TD's on 13 carries. Bolden at QB didn't have much stats, but no turnovers and got in the endzone twice on the ground. FB Udoh was held in check after his big game last week. The ground game got close to 5 yards a carry with 0 turnovers so when you mix in good defense and Army is tough to beat playing like that.

Will Army Make The Playoffs ?

        Conference Championship Preview

If Billy Napier leaves Army as OC this year regardless of how it plays how its going to be a memorable one. Army sits at 10-2 and a real shot to make the playoffs in his 3rd year. The problem is they are ranked behind two teams in the Conference USA and those teams play each other. We don't see how Army could jump whoever wins that game, but anything is possible. Lets take a look at each championship game and how it effects Army. Army faces a ranked South Florida team

        ACC = #1 Clemson vs #6 Pitt
Clemson will be in regardless as the #1 ranking despite having 2 loses. Pitt is the 8th seed so maybe a loss by them is enough to fall out of the playoffs since it would be the 3rd loss.

BIG 12 = #2 Kansas St vs #15 Texas Tech
Texas Tech is ranked ahead of Army now but isn't projected to make the playoffs. We are cheering for them to go ahead and lose. Because them pulling the upset would likely mean both them and Kansas State make the playoffs.

Mountain West = #22 Bose St vs San Diego
Boise lost last week so this pretty much knocks them out of the playoff race as the small school team.

        SEC = #8 Auburn vs #11 Alabama
Both teams are projecting in the playoffs now and we don't think the loser will get in. So the winner here shouldn't really matter for us and we think opens the door up for Washington or Kentucky

        Big 10 = #7 USC vs #9 Ohio St
Similar to the SEC game we don't think the loser will make the playoffs. The question will be how far the loser falls and who jumps them.

USA = #13 Smoky Mountain vs #16 Minnesota State
This is the biggest one for us as currently Minnesota State is projected to make the playoffs despite the worse ranking. Army has to have a win and somehow jump both teams. Since Minnesota State is projected if they win we don't see how we would jump them as they are facing a higher ranked team then us. Both teams just have 1 loss while Army has two.

        ----------------------------------

        Not Playing & Playoff Locks

        #3 Notre Dame

        #4 Tennesse

        #5 Penn State

        #10 UGA

A odd year with 3 top 5 teams not playing a conference championship game. That makes them locks to get the 5 to 7 seed or at worst make the playoffs. UGA is ranked 10th in the polls so with Army 17 we see them as a lock.

        Other Key Teams Not Playing
        #12 Washington

        #14 Kentucky

These two teams could be why Army doesn't get in with 9-3 records. If one of the teams loses this weekend like Pitt, USC or Auburn these two teams should jump up and take their place.

          2026 American Championship Game

          Army Playoff Bound ?

The biggest game in Napier's 3 years a win and some luck and maybe the playoffs happen and we are excited its snowing. South Florida's defense is lead by MLB Rodney Hill (87 ovr) and DE Mosley (84 ovr) a good unit ranked better then we are rating wise.

Keyes scores off a great option pitch a big play from 40 yards away on 3rd and long. Their DL is killing our pass attempts and we are forced to punt. We get the ball back with 1 minute until half time and make a terrible pass. They score from 25 yards away on the 1st play and we are down 3. I go 3 and out and punt right after that. The defense lead by the assistant coach of the year gets a interception and we are start at the good 36-yard line with 47 seconds. We kick a FG and it's tied at 10 going into the half.

Its 4th and 2 around midfield and we call a QB power since the middle is wide open. Somehow two DL stop and we give them the ball back in good field position. We end up recovering a fumble and at the end of 3 we are down 3.

A crucial 3rd and 2 we call a toss out of the power I to #18 Hocker and we really need this one. It looks like he is stopped, but a spin moves results in a 1st down. Later in that drive it's a tough call 4th and 12 at the 44 and we decide to punt, and it ends up a touchback. We get the ball back and its 3rd and 4 and FB Udoh out of the I-formation rips off a 28-yard run. We have it at the good 25 with 4 minutes to go still down 3. We end up playing it safe and tieing the game with 2:15 remaining.

I get the ball back with 49 seconds and 2 timeouts but afraid to make a mistake Army settle for overtime. 4th and 1 at the 5 and this is our offense's specialty and Keyes converts from the Maryland I. The next play we score on a QB power. USF is driving inside the 10 and its looking like 2nd overtime is coming and that didn't happen. Army wins a close one 20 to 13. A special shoutout to Brady Small credited with 27 pancake blocks

Editor's Note - Looks like the game glitched and ended early from what I could tell. So I'm now hoping I don't make the playoffs.

            Army Misses Playoffs

Things went as we expected despite an Army win they have missed out on the playoffs. Despite the teams around them losing they still stay at #17 which is fair since they have 2 loses and had a soft schedule.

Minnesota State beat Smoky Mountain so they got the small school bid. Texas Tech pulled off the upset so both big 12 teams made it. Auburn beat Alabama so both SEC teams made it. Pitt also in the ACC pulled the upset and both of those teams made it. Despite the upsets the next two teams up we mentioned Washington and Kentucky didn't make the playoffs. Which we think is fair as we don't like punishing teams for conference championship games

Army ends up with not a fun bowl matchup vs the ranked Appalachian State. Army rolls in this one 45 to 24 and the best offense performance of the year. Army has 510 yards of offense with just 1 turnovers. The ground game was unstoppable 417 yards at 8.1 per carry. The true freshman Rachel took the lead here 123 yards and 1 TD on just 10 carries. Keyes went 6 carries for 85 yards with TD's from Udoh and Scheffler. The backups also got a chance to shine 3rd string FB scored two TD's and backup QB Kern had 85 rushing yards and 1 TD. We are very excited graduating FB Udoh made a memorable last carry for a TD.

Brady Small was an absolute beast! His blocking stood out in clips time and time again.

Yea Brady was amazing definitely the MVP of my team. It was rare to have the highest rated person at a position year 3. But he came in like a 80 overall as a sophomore then two of the coaches had the OL training boost. He still didn’t meet his max potential. The majority of my runs are up the middle so I leaned on him a lot especially if the CPU was weak at DT. I’ll wrap up his career tomorrow.

                    Grading Legacy of Army's Departures

This weekend Army got some exciting news as Center Brady Small was taken in the 1st round. This caps off an amazing year for him which he totaled 156 pancakes blocks in 13 games. The more surprising news is FB Kayne Udoh projected to go undrafted went in the 6th round. Both players were 4 year starters for Army with 3 of them being under Napier. We will now take a look at where they stack up with past players Billy has coached.

                    Brady Small
                    Top 25 overall = 2nd
                    Best OL = 1st

Brady jumps up the 2nd overall of best players just behind Levi Lewis who started for 3 years during the big run at Lousanna. Brady's senior year is why a 1st team all American while winning two awards. Then you factor in this was a 10-win season and a 3-year starter under Billy. The 1st round picks also scores him points. He was the highest rated C in the game something very rare at Army. Brady was the MVP of the team and why we ran up the middle most of the time.

                    FB Kanye Udoh
                    Top 25 overall = 19th
                    Best FB = 1st

The no brainer of best FB Bill has coached with fellow senior Jake Rendina also making that list. Udoh was our "b back" which meant he played the FB in the flexbone and HB as the power back. We ranked him a little below Montrell Johnson in the top 25 as he was over 800 rushing yards for 3 years. If the offense continues to play well Udoh will always be the 1st one to play that position. He was a good power runner with some solid speed and why he didn't block a lot he could when called upon.

                    1. QB Levi Lewis (18 to 21)
                    2. C Brady Small (Army 24-27)

                      Billy Napier Leaves Army

We just got the breaking news Army OC Billy Napier is leaving to take the same position at Smoky Mountain University.

The Smoky Mountain Black Bears are in the Conference USA with the rest of the rebranded teams. They were expected to be great right away and disappointed with 7 and 5 wins. Then was 11-1 in the regular season and 1 game away from making the playoffs last year.

                      On leaving Army
It was really tough leaving Army as I've got attached to the players and recruited them specifically for my offense. We were heavily projected to be playoff teams the next 2 years If I had stayed. With only 2 upcoming seniors the future is very bright. I feel like the success we had last year came with a * because "it's just a military school". If you grew up in the North Georgia area like me and so many places close to East Tennesse like Kentucky, Alabama and Ohio. The Pigeon Forge area holds a special place in my heart as everyone goes to the area a few times a year starting when you are young with your grandparents. It's known for being the home of Dolly Parton so I'm excited to be able to renew my Dollywood season pass.

On why he took a job that wasn't a head coaching job
It's no secret I was wanting a head job again and I feel like I'm ready for it after the way Florida ended and barely missing the playoffs at Army. When the right offers didn't come, I felt like I needed to prove I can do it another school and the offers would come. This does allow me with more options on building a team with using the transfer portal, JUCO and bigger budget to chase some more 3*. I can also use the redshirt process here as well and they gave me full control over recruiting next year as well.

On going from having less talent of your opponents to having more talent
My first 2 years at Army if you go by the experts (ovr ratings) we didn't stack up in any game. It was always a uphill battle with the restrictions in place. Thats why it was tough to leave because many expected us to go undefeated next year. This past year was the 1st year our players were on par with others, and you saw the wins stack up. This is going to be the other way as us and Minnesota State are clearly the top of the food chain in this conference and why the other conferences are trying to pull us away. With the roles being reversed it means the expectations go up from the fan base and you have no excuses when it doesn't work. I do know our AD is working on scheduling some tough out of conference games to make it more interesting for the fans.

On the pressure to win year 1
This team was 11-1 going into the conference championship game then lost to the defending national champs and then the bowl game. We will prob be projected in the teens in the preseason poll. Being in the small conference typically they are only 1 slot and the big guys get the others. We are hoping to line up some tough OOC games as we said to make us look good if we lose a game or two. Since this is a brand-new system and we have to get to 11 wins that's the pressure more than just getting bowl eligible

On how transforming a successful spread team to a power run team will work
We will have more on the players to look out for tomorrow. On the surface this does add to the pressure because this was a spread passing team last year. We are shifting to our power run option-based scheme. Our QB lead the country in passing yards as a freshman and is more of a passer then a runner. But I do think we will be able make a smooth transition right away. The OL is one of the best in the country once we got done with fall camp. Despite being labeled as pass protecters most of them are better run blocking then passing. We only have 1 FB on the roster, but he is faster then the FB's we played last year. We have a few HB's despite not being power backs that could be really special. The WR's we have returning were thin so that's a major reason why the head coach decided to make the move to this offense

5 Smoky Mountain Players To Know

                        Backfield Edition

                        #5 HB Quincy Beach
                        Jr- 5'10 176
                        Impact Dev - 85 ovr

The highest rated HB on the roster after showing big improvement this fall. He will be the #3 HB and we aren't show how we will use him as isn't a scheme fit as a receiving back. His 91 spec catch, 87 catch, 81 catch in traffic is nice but its a type of back Napier didn't have at Army. So it will take some creative coaching to get him involved when the box is loaded. He has about 90 in all 4 speed ratings with 94 juke and isn't a power guy. He is only a junior with upside and a dev trait so we will need to find a way. He could get the 2nd and short type carries.

                        #4 - FB Brett Dubose
                        Jr. - 5'11 230
                        73 ovr

When we took the job he was the only FB on the roster so we added two blockers late in recruiting. Thankfully despite being labeled a blocker he is super athletic more so than Kanye Udoh the last 3 years. He is perfect for the flexbone 89 speed, 87 acc, 85 agility. He will also play some power HB for us with 83 break tackle and 81 trucking. But he isn't the best at that so he will not start in that role. He can block as well 75 run block, but lead blocking is behind the freshman FB's. His athleticism should be perfect for the flexbone and we project about 40-60 yards per game. He is maxed out potential wise so will not be improving rating wise.

                        #3 HB Kam Bankhead
                        Sr. - 5'10 210
                        70 ovr - star development

We aren't worried about the low overall and 18 career rushing yards in 4 years as Kam is going to be a monster for us. At 210 pounds has solid speed all in the 87 to 89 range helped out with 93 carrying. He isn't labeled as one, but he is really a power back with 92 trucking and 87 break tackle. The thing we love the most is his crazy strength at 87 for a HB. He will be our #1 power HB and should score the most TD's. He is a senior, but does have a lot of upside and impact development. So with a hot start his ratings could be really shoot up the 2nd half of the year

                        #2 HB D.T Jones Jr
                        Sr. - 5'7 170
                        80 ovr - Normal Dev

DT Jones is a flat out freak and unfortunately he is a senior. We think a real chance we have two 1K yards rusher between him and Bankhead. It will take some time to see who becomes the true #1. When you see a 5'7 170 pound receiving back it doesn't match the player he is. The 90 speed is ok, but shines with 93 acc, 97 agility and 95 change of direction. He also a elite power HB despite his frame with 93 break tackle and 92 trucking. His 98 toughness means he is durable for 15+ carries a game even if he has a low carry rating. His upside is a little more limited, but we do expect to see some improvements with his receiving skills which are already solid. He was the starting HB last year and had 846 rushing yards and 252 receiving. When you add in that combo of speed and power, he could even get into the Heisman race for us with being able to run wide or between the tackles

                        #1 QB Darren Washington
                        Soph. - 5'11 197
                        86 ovr - Normal Dev

He might not have the biggest stats of the 5 mentioned, but it will be the best story. Because the former 3* improviser QB lead the country in passing yards last year as a Freshman. He had 4,647 yards, 60% with 44 TD and 11 Interceptions. He is a super accurate QB with 88 arm strength. It will be interesting to see how Napier adds passing into this offense. Will it be under 10 attempts a game or close to 20 when they load the box. If Washington can show he can run two totally different offenses that could help his eventually draft stock. He is mostly maxed out and we were disappointed we didn't see any improvements this offseason. He does have some speed upside as you see in the picture and that could be a game changer if that improves this year. His 75 speed is low, but its helped out with 92 agility and 92 change of direction. If he get his speed rating improved to be a threat on those option plays while being able to pass the ball on the 8- and 9-man fronts. This offense could be unstoppable in year 1.

                          2026 Recruiting & 2027 Schedule

We are very excited to announced that we came to a agreement with other conferences (ie glitch fixed) and we will be bringing you some much more fun teams in out of conference games. We will be testing that out right away with Virginia Tech on the road coming off a 5 win season. Then week 2 we face our old team #20 Army at home. Then week 3 we have are other old team on the road at #26 Florida. Then last the in state big boys #7 Tennesse on the road.

We did get a good draw and avoiding Minnesota State a powerhouse. We didn't know if this would happen with the one-year trial of no divisions. The best conference team we will face record wise is 10-3 Yellowstone at home and 8-5 Wears Valley at home. We somehow have 5 home conference games

                          Hope 2019 Schedule

                          Dec 1vs Port Canaveral

We are just going to quickly go over recruiting as we only had a few roster spots open when we took over. Since we didn't want to cut alot of people we only brought in a few of our own guys and removed people from the board we didn't like. Army didn't have any players enter the transfer portal and we choose not to steal any recruits they were going after.

They coaches before us signed or lead for four 4* and just rolled with it. They were all WR's which was a position we needed we ended up moving one of those to CB. The three WR's look to be stud with a lot of gems and upside in them which we will touch on tomorrow. We needed two blocking FB's that was the biggest players we brought in and since one had the name 'Smoker" similar to our team name we had to get him. We did bring in a Juco power HB we found and Toon our first ever transfer portal signing. We had a pretty small class with the final rankings in the 40's. If your looking for playing time right away its two of the WR's and the blocking FB's

5 Smoky Mountain Players To Know

                            Pass Catchers / OL Edition

                            #5 WR David Vansumeren
                            Fr- 5'10 176
                            Impact Dev - 75 ovr

If you are wanting to know who will be the #1 HB next year it could be this 4* true freshman with impact development. He is a burner 97 speed and 94 change of direction and his grade jumps up when playing HB thanks to high carry rating. For now though he is WR #2 with not as much upside as you would like. His route running being better deep then short isn't what we like. He has good hands as well. He does come at 57 run blocking which is the best on the team. Last year our #2 WR had single digit catches and he should top that by week 5.

                            #4 - C Josh Glaser
                            Sr. - 6'4 295
                            86 ovr - Normal Dev

The highest rated OL we have with unreal 95 strength and the potential to reach 99. His high IQ helps with that rating. Despite being a pass blocker his core run blocking grade is 6 points higher vs the run. He should be a great C, but his overall is worse then last years C Brady Small

                            #3 - C Jalen Irons
                            Sr. - 6'3 298
                            Normal Dev - 83 ovr

We have another C on the list so somebody will have to make the move to OG. He is the best run blocker on the team at 91. He is more finesse than power so it isn't a perfect marriage. He has some upside, but since he is a senior with normal development, we don't expect to see that this year. This is a example despite all the pass protectors on the OL you can see why we think we can run the ball as good as last year.

                            #2 - WR Verone Valentine
                            Jr. - 6'0 179
                            78 ovr - Normal Dev

Verone is our #1 WR and very similar to David Clerk who was a 4.3 guy last year. We never got David involved as much as we wanted, and we are hoping its different with a better QB. The former 1* with normal development is maxed out from a developmental side. He is as fast as they come and has 99 ball carry vision, but we wanted to challenge ourselves and not move him to HB. He will see some carries in the wildcat. He was very productive last year with 70 catches, 1,016 yards and 7 TD. We hope to take advantage of the 1 on 1 with one high safety's with a accurate QB

                            #1 - TE Eric Lampley
                            Jr. - 6'3 232
                            80 ovr - Normal Dev

Eric gives us something we didn't have at Army a threat in the passing game while still being a good blocker. He has 81 run blocking which puts him just outside the top 10 in the country. His 75 strength isn't as high as you would like. He isn't a burner but does have pretty good athletic ability for a blocking TE with 79 speed and 85 acceleration. He has good hands 86 catch and 80 catch in traffic with 76 short route running. He isn't a major threat in the passing game, but with wanting to throw the ball more this year. Just the little bit more athleticism with the hands when facing those 8 man fronts. He could be a great player while still being able to block which is the main thing. He is maxed out with his overall.

Bonus - WR Leonard Vick (73 ovr)
We wanted to show some negative as well and this 4* true freshman with star development. Leonard is going to be a monster 6'4 with 96 speed and 88 spec catch highlighting the way. You could also throw 6'5 Hakeem Kopp into this with his impact development just not as much upside. With speeds in the 90's and 96 jumping he is also going to be really good. The problem is they both have dealbreakers which are 300+ passing yards. We have zero % chance to reach those so both are near locks to transfer. We wanted to show some negatives that deal with changing from spread to option scheme. Both are true freshman so we have decided to redshirt them to still give them 4 years to play if they transfer out.

                              Opening Night - Week 1

                              Smoky Mountain Debut @ VT

It was finally time for Billy Napier's debut at his new school Smoky Mountain Black Bears. Right away he noticed the Virgina Tech fans were loud something he didn't face vs the American division. VT is coming off a disappointing 5-win season.

The 1st drive a big 43-yard option by #1 HB D.T Jones would lead to a TD for him a few plays later. Then the QB Darren Washington scores on a power run and SMU is up 14 to 0. A bad option pitch is returned for a TD to cut the lead in half. Another impressive drive right before half and QB Washington connects on a TD to the TE to make it 21-7

It would go the other direction in the 2nd half. Napier is going to just throw a screen pass on 3rd and long to play it safe. Washington is sacked and the ball comes loose and VT gets it in the redzone. The defense would hold them to a FG (21-10). Washington would make another critical mistake (100% on me) with a bad interception on 3rd and goal. VT would score and get the 2 point play to make it a 3 point play with 9 minutes to go. Around midfield the next drive a big 4th and 4 is converted, but we have a flag and its punting time. We would get the ball back with 4 minutes to go just looking to run the clock out. A massive 4th and inches is picked up just barely and more time is going to run. This final drive VT is loading the box dare we say all 11 people in it. However we aren't confident enough to pass game 1 on the road. We pick up the game sealing 1st down on a power option and survive.

A tough hard fought 1st win and home field was massive for VT in this one. The turnovers were a problem -2 in this game with the int being the only real bad one. D.T Jones is going to be a star as we projected 136 yards with the power back getting 85.

                                Smoky Mountain vs Army

                                Napier vs his Old Team

A huge game its Napier's new team vs where he spent the last 3 years. Army has saw their team overall go up from 77 last year to 81 this year. You can see some changes a little more passing then last year and not the starting HB and QB we would have picked. They lost to a bad team week 1.

Nathan Rachel who we would start is the backup and scores a 1-yard TD to make it 10-0. At the end of the 1st quarter Smoky Mountain is going nowhere with -30 yards offense. That would change when 4th goal and the 2 ends in a TD. It was set up by a 1st down conversation on 3rd and 17. Army would march down and score with a 32 yard pass out of the flexbone. We go 3 and out and Army gets the ball back just 38 seconds on the clock. Juan Corp breaks a sack fires it deep and hits a wide open player. The route is on Army is up 24-7.

We have it 1st and goal and score a TD, but its called back with a hold. On 3rd down a bad option pitch and Army takes it to the house (32-7). Despite being down big its 4th and 36 and SMU has to punt. The Army DL is destroying people with the 6th sack of the game.

Then things got personal Its 4th and long with just 1 minute in the game. Army passes it deep and gets a TD if that wasn't bad enough they go for 2. We fumble the ball on the final drive and Army shocks Napier's new team 43 to 7.
