    Smoky Mountain vs Florida

Napier vs his Old Team Part 2

Smoky Mountain has no time to dwell on the big loss and it's another personal game for Napier. Florida is ranked 12th and the game is in the swamp. Also next up is @Tennessee who is ranked high, but 2 loses already

We recover a fumble and settle for an FG. We get a nice run by DT Jones down to the 1. We try and get our QB a rushing TD, but on 3rd down just give it to the FB (10-3). They score in the final seconds before half to make it 10 all. We score on 4th and goal at the 1 and with 3 minutes to go in the 3rd take a 7-point lead.

We have the backup QB in the game, and we had sworn off options for now. We call one and its fumbled away. That leads to a TD and it's tied at 17. We kick a FG to go up 3 and then get a 3 & out. The #1 HB is showing wear and tear, so this drive is all the #2 power HB. He gets a big time 24-yard run down to the 25. We are still up by 3 with under 3 minutes, but they have 4 timeouts to go. We end up settling for a FG that drive but do make them use their timeouts. We didn't trust our passing game despite them having 10 in the box. They run out of time and Smoky Mountain bounces back with a big-time win.

This was a game where we had to abandoned the pass game being on the road plus scared after the Army game. Napier is going to have to change up the style of play and call less options and flexbone formations. Having two 100+ yard HB's was cool the first time that's happened

My plan all along was to make several different coaching stops until I reach my final one. That mirrors real life and keeps things interesting since I'm about 350 hours into this game. I really wanted a head coach job as the super sim defense is to over powered so hopefully next year.. Hope you had a good vacation

          Smoky Mountain Loses 2nd Game

          Changes Coming To Offense

Smoky Mountain suffered their 2nd loss of the year to Tennessee 21 to 6 in Knoxville. If you aren't familiar with the area these schools are only about 30 minutes from each other. Tennesse came into the game ranked 7th so a natural rival for years to come. The homefield advantage really played a bif part in this game and its the last one of those we will face this year.

If you look at the stats it was a defense game SMU had just 264 yards of offense just 60 less then Tennesse. They were no turnovers in the game and SMU had the better 3rd down %. Despite having 0 TD's to Tennesse 3 even the redzone % was even. Just they hit on some longer TD passes.

The first 4 non-conference games were hard on purpose to make up for the soft conference slate. It's a tough way to start with 3 ranked teams 3 road games while changing the offense from spread to power run. Hoping to go 3-1 which would be great for the playoff chances they now fall out of the top 25. It should be a lot of wins to close out the year and 10-2 is what is projected. If they make the playoffs will hinge on the other small schools and needing some losses.

After the game Billy Napier said some big changes were coming to the offense. We are still going to run the same plays we had in our playbook. Just this isn't going to be the same flexbone / option centered offense we ran at army. For the reminder of the year we are going to have to throw the ball more and run less options as Washinton has struggled with pitches. We will look to run more Information runs and throw some to the TE's. When we get into conference play our OL should shine. We still will get back to the flexbone / option in the future, but for now that's not what this offense is best at.

            Smoky Mountain's 1st Conference Game

            First Game With Offense Tweaks

Billy felt like some changes was needing to the offense for the rest of the year. Which meant no options, less flexbone and more passing. Still the plan was the same establish the run just throw when they load the box more.

The results were pretty good scoring 38 points with close to 500 yards of offense. The turnovers were a problem we did run one option and it was a fumble returned for a TD. So yea the options plays aren't what this team is good at. The defense also gets credit for playing well and a lot of 3 and outs.

The run game wasn't as good as it looks as wildcat WR turned QB broke a long run while we were just trying to run out the clock. Neither of the HB's went for over 100 yard despite 15 carries. The FB had his best game of the year.

The passing game was a good sight 200 yards with 3 passing TD's. With so many power sets it's expected the TE and HB would lead in yards. Overall a good win to start off conference and you should see Smoky Mountain go on a win streak

              Smoky Mountain Improves to 9-2

Two Wins Away from the Playoffs

Editor's note - For a variety of reasons that I won't try and get into. I've decided to just quickly finish up the season and then just restart next year as a head coach. I'll be taking a head coaching job even if it's a school I don't like.

              ------------------
Smoky Mountain as expected is piling up the conference wins winning 6 more games since we last meet up. At times its big wins with three of those 30+ points and three more times 21 and under. In the end all that matters is the results even the ugly wins.

The offense play calling has shifted a few times and the passing game from QB Washington hasn't worked 8 TD's and 7 Interceptions with 59% and 1,266 yards though he has added 7 rushing TD's. Senior DT Jones is leading the way over 1,000 yards and 7 yards per carry with the #2 Bankhead 681 yards. I

The playoff spot as expected likely comes down to the conference championship vs Minnesota State who is ranked 1 spot ahead of Smoky Mountain. Its been a mixed bag of results and a playoff spot would help Napier's case to finally get a head coaching job

Smoky Mountain Makes Playoffs After Huge Win

SMU Beat #6 Minnesota State By 8

A lot of upsets over the last few weeks had this matchup two top 10 so the winner would get the conference and a 1st round bye. Smoky Mountain was without its #1 HB D.T Jones who was 2nd team all American with over 1,00 yards

Smoky Mountain played the best game of the year and going into the 4th quarter it was 35 to 14. HB Bankhead broke off the best run we have seen maybe in our 5 years. Minnesota State would score two 4th quarter TD's to make it a little closer than it really was. Bankhead a monster game 23 carries for 148 yards and 2 TD with the HB Beach also getting 127 yards. The QB spot was back to being a game manager just 11 attempts and 69 passing yards.

A monster win as Smoky Mountain gets a 1st round bye and will play Kentucky in the 2nd round after earning a bye. Minnesota State also makes the playoffs and these teams could face again round 3. This does make Napier's time here a success despite some ups and downs

Napier Finally Gets Head Coach Job

Before we get into the big news Smoky Mountain's season is over as they lost a defensive battle to Kentucky. Who would go on to win the championship behind a big year for the QB. Pitt was going for back to back championships.

The big news again Billy Napier is on the move and finally after 4 years has a head coaching job. The offers week 1 were all rough and finally on the 2nd wave he found a offer he liked. Indiana was tempting and climbing up the big 10 ranks. Them and Wake Forest had better rosters and this will be more of a blank slate team. Below we will break down some reasons he took the job and to look forward to as he takes over at Kennesaw State.

                  1. Georgia
If you think back to the backstory we posted on Bill Napier and where his mom currently lives (1 mile from me). Kennesaw is just a little over a hour away so close to his family. The other reason is recruiting Georgia is loaded with talent and Billy's specialty is Metro Atlanta. So that will give a edge as the school's recruiting grades is weak. A great fit on and off the field.

                  2. No Expectations
Kennesaw is coming off a 7 win season, but dropped to a 1.5 to 1 star school. The expectation is just 4 wins so getting to a bowl game year 1 would be a win. The school grades we talked are mostly in the D range so this a rebuilding project along the same lines he had at Army. The school grades were so bad mostly 2* transfers wouldn't even consider the school. They are some solid positions on the team like OL and QB, but the skill players and depth is bad. This may not be his final destination and could jump to a bigger program in a few years if the perfect job offer comes along. The other school grades were in the 80's and he choose one with a 73 to have the clean slate to build it up.

                  3. Exciting QB Battle
The biggest storyline and we will have more on that tomorrow is who wins the starting QB job. While they starting QB last year is returning and is a scrambling QB its not automatic he wins the job as he is a finished player. They are 2 more scrambling QB's we like one of which still has some upside. A wildcard field general QB with size could is tempting if he has a good offseason as he has solid speed

                  4. Defense
We have been in charge of recruiting defense players lately but not be able to coach them up. We finally get the chance to control both sides of the ball. We project this side of the ball to have some growing pains as Army's defense was really good.

                  5. Mobile QB
We have yet to have a QB that runs even a 4.5 (80 speed) and finally that will change this year. While these QB's aren't the fastest QB's in the game they are in that mid 80's range which is a much better than what we had at Army and Smoky Mountain. With our skill players not projected to be the best next year. We have depth at QB so we could see a lot of runs from the QB and hopefully take our option game to the next level eventually.

Napier Having Sleepless Nights Over Who Starts at QB

                    Fastest = Goff 87
                    Best Acc = Fayad 95
                    Best Agi = Lyles 99
                    Best COD = Goff 96
                    Strongest Arm = Lyles 92
                    Most Accurate = Lyles
Best Throw on Run / Pressure = Tutt 86
                    Best Natural Runner = Tutt
                    Best Upside = Lyles

                    ----------------------------------------------

                    Jr. - Tobias Goff
                    6'2 206 - 73 ovr

                    Why he should start
He is in #4 on the pecking order for us still some could argue he should start. He is the fastest (87) QB on the roster and the best change of direction (96). his agility (92) with bronze option king would make him a threat on the ground. His arm strength (89) with solid short and medium accuracy (83) makes him not just a runner.

                    Why he shouldn't start
He is maxed out potential wise so his 73 grade will not be improving. It's not so much about what he doesn't do just more about the other QB's he battling with.

                    -------------------------------------

                    So. - Damarius Fayad
                    6'2 200 - 77 ovr

                    Why he should start
The former 3* recruit has impact development with a little room to grow in IQ and Accuracy. He does have silver option king the best of the bunch. A big threat on the ground would be the best Napier has had recently with 85 speed, 87 COD and most importantly 95 acceleration and 91 agility. He does have a solid arm with 87 power and accuracy 86,82,77. Once the improvement hits in accuracy his arm would be plenty good enough in this offense. His 88 break sacking is also the best on the roster. Some of his smaller ratings we also like 87 throw on the run, 82 throw under pressure, 90 ball carry vision and 90 play action

                    Why he shouldn't start
Even when he hits the full upside his overall grade won't match Lyles. He is a similar type of QB to Tutt who has started for 3 years. While his arm is ok with a lack of offense weapons the pass game will be lucky to get over 100 yards per game. Can you bench the best QB in school history for the same type of guy just a little faster ?

                    -----------------------------------------

                    Sr. - Deontae Tutt
                    5'11 195 - 80 ovr

                    Why he should start
Holds several career records for the school and coming off his best year ever. For his career 8,788 passing yards, 68 TD, 40 Int, 60% with 1,500 rushing yards and 11 TD. He can beat you with his legs 86 speed, 85 agility, 89 acceleration and 91 COD. The most natural runner we have 96 BCV and 96 carrying. We love running play action and his 97 is top tier. He has arm as well with 90 power and accuracy 83,84,77. It's hard to bench a proven QB that can run and throw for his senior year that holds school records

                    Why he shouldn't start
He is maxed out potential wise and the other QB's offer more upside. You are wasting a year of development for them if they don't start. He isn't the best thrower or runner you have.

                    --------------------------------

                    So. - John Lyles
                    6'5 224 - 81 ovr

                    Why he should start
John is the type of NFL QB that 1* schools just don't get very often. When you do you better not waste any time like not starting until his junior year. His size you love 6'5 224 that can throw and run some. He is loaded with upside and the very rare star development. It's not just about upside with him as he is the highest rated QB on the team. A big time arm 92 throw power with short and middle accuracy already in the 90's. The best deep ball thrower on the team as well. He is a field general QB so 77 speed and 75 accuracy is ok for that profile. The most intriguing part is he has 99 agility and 85 change of direction. A rare combo, but in practice that mixed with 87 throw on the run really helps out. The thing that really sits him apart is that upside and the potential to go up 7 layers in speed/quickness on a throwing QB. If he reaches his full potential and adds speed you are talking about Heisman level stuff. Can his speed reach mid to high 80's by next year?

                    Why he shouldn't start
He has ok speed, but isn't nearly as fast today as the other 3 QB's. We are weak at weapons so our QB can't just be a game manager like previous years. Him not having a option king badge hurts. We are very thin at FB so if we have a QB that also can't run it could really limit our offense. Last year Smoky Mountain QB lead the country in passing yards and we had to put the kid breaks on him to win games.

                      KSU Season Preview

                      Strengths & Weakness

                      Strength

                      QB
We went in depth about the QB on the roster in the last post. We have 4 QB's we are comfortable with and just 1 of them a senior. We are set for the next few years at this position.

                      OL
The starting OL ratings are 84-86-82-84-83 even if they aren't the exact type of OL we want that's a real strength. We also have great depth including a few in the low 80's and nearly everyone mid-high 70's. It's a veteran group with 4 seniors, but we have a lot of bodies so OL still isn't a major need in recruiting

                      DL
We run a 4 DL defense and have 3 quality DE's in the low 80's and none of them seniors. Sophomore's 294 pound Witherspoon and Alex Moe offer upside. The future is set with true freshman Wilkins, Kalu and Stick all having dev traits. The DT's isn't as good, but we have 7 on the roster. The big name here is Philip Kpassagnon a possible future 1st rounder. He is a 78 overall with star development and a lot of upside. We have depth at all DL positions so can easily afford some injuries.

                      Weakness

                      FB
We like having 4-5 FB's on the roster and we just have 2 with one of those coming as a walk on. Both our FB's are blockers so low 70's speed means the triple option will not be ran much this year. We are going with true freshman Fred Schulters as the starter over the better senior. Despite having a dev trait he has limited upside. Don't expect to see this group do much outside of 2nd and short carries. We need to sign 3 in this class. We have a DT as our #3 FB.

                      Power Back / B back
We have zero power backs on the roster at the HB or FB spot. We tried to get one and it just didn't work out and we wanted our old HB Hocker who was in the portal. This will change how we run our offense in the redzone and we don't know how it will look. We have to get by with 175 pound Bollinger as the power back this year. This will be priority #1 in recruiting

                      LB
We only have 8 LB's on the roster the good news is none of them are seniors. That's clearly a dangerous spot to be in if injuries happen and our starting LOLB will be rated in the 60's. We do have a few LB we like MLB Sua Mix (84 ovr) and true freshman Abdul Brisker (65 ovr) Brisker is a 3* with impact development with upside and 88 speed. If those two get hurt we are in trouble

I'm excited to finally be able to control the defense. The sim engine for defense was a little overpowered so that's one reason why I had to take a head job this year. I was really torn on who to start at QB as I've yet to see what this offense can do with a true dual threat QB. However, I couldn't pass up the potential with Lyles. Also I do plan to play two QB's and I think it's easier to sub in the more faster guy as the backup

                            Recruiting Preview

We are going back to talking recruiting our biggest passion since we will be here for at least a few years. Its going to be a bigger challenge then even Army was as we are only 1* school who was 2.5. That means just 350 hours during the week. We are 6 players short of the 85-man roster now. The best grade we have is C in championship contender. If any other school wants the player we are after then we likely have to back out. Since we haven't been able to scout as much as usual here are 4 must have players.

We will have the same rules we had from the start which is mostly 2*. We will generally keep within the pipeline states. The select few 3* targets we go after must have us in top 5 preseason. We don't include FB's in that.

ATH / LB Alejandro Salcedo - 3* gem
The #1 player on our board and a true gem despite being ranked just 795th in the country. The amazing news is no other offers means he likely ends up with us and is our star of this class. The gem means he should come with some upside. He is big time speed guy for 6'2 240 pounds for just a 3*. He has 92 speed, 89 agility and 88 acceleration. The 85 tackle leads the way with 78 strength. The big question is do we keep him at LB or move him to FB/HB?

                            ATH / LB - Kris Schwab - 3* gem
The 6'0 231 pound MLB Athlete does want to stay close to home so a win there. We have him listed as LB with 79 tackle, 78 pursuit and 71 block shedding leading the way. The athlete part shows with 89 speed, 86 agility and 91 acceleration. He does come with the team player badge meaning he probably could play at FB. His only other offer at this point is Southern Miss.

HB Parker Toone - 2* gem
A power back not quite as good as Clare with worse trucking, break tackle and slower. Still he is gem so should have upside and a major position of need. South Carolina has offered him so if they turn on the interest we will not get him. We need him to want to stay close to home since he is from Georgia.

HB Demarcus Clare - 2* gem
A 229 pound power back that's a gem who we have higher on our board then Toone. His 88 speed, 85 acceleration is about as good as you will see for a 2*. The 83 trucking and 80 strength lead the way from the power side. UCF and App state also have offered him, but it looks like UCF doesn't see him as a priority.

                            Other Names

                            FB Rudy Mekari
A blocking FB that we need and should get. He has a hall of fame badge so could have some upside.

                            ATH / TE Malik Moncrief
The other and last 3* we are going after not counting the FB's. He projects as TE so could play WR for us. A possession type of player with size at 6'4 240

                            ATH / HB Mike Gentry
Another power back player as we aren't confident we get the others. He is more likely to end up at FB or LB then HB.

                            ATH / HB Kenya Phenix
Yet another power back athlete because our biggest 3 needs HB, FB, LB are all the same type of player. He is a little faster than Gentry, but no badges

                            MLB Tommy Gage
Not a flashy player, but we need bodies at LB and we like the pass coverage speedy types. He would allow us to potential move one of the 3* to FB.

                            Major Needs
                            HB
                            FB
                            LB
                            K

                            Mild Needs
                            TE

                              5 Players To Know

                              Schedule Breakdown

                              LB Sua Mix
The leader of the defense and is just a junior so will be back next year. He lead the team with 80 tackles last year. He has 88 pursuit that can cover and run a little. He isn't going to improve any, but should rack up the stats for 2 more years

                              HB Zay Bollinger
Another Junior that will have to step up as the #1 HB this year. He is the power back despite being just 5'9 and 175 pounds. He isn't a speed guy with high 80's. His mid 80's trucking and break tackle means he has to be the power back this year. He will be counting on a lot because the power runs to keep the chains move is what makes our offense.

                              DE Julius Witherspoon
A 294 pound Sophomore with impact dev and some upside. He will slide inside as the rush DT so we like his versatility. A high overall so you could see that reach early 90's before he graduates

                              LB Abdul Brisker
We got lucky they were already leading for this 3* who comes in with a lot of upside and a dev trait. He is completely raw so we are hoping his 88 speed is enough to make plays as a true freshman. We are paper thin at LB so he will be the sub LB and play a lot

                              CB Demario Bakhtiari
We have 3 freshman players that are close and he wins the nickel job. A 6'2 CB with 92 speed and a good amount of upside. He already has 85 catching so should develop into a real playmaker

We took a similar approach to our schedule as last year at Smoky Mountain. Which was interesting games in the non-conference to make up for things being weak in the sunbelt.
We start off on the road with Mayberry who has a rating 2 points better than us. We then face Army who were terrible last year without us. We have last year's team Smoky Mountain on the road as well. Before that we have in state and #1 UGA. So 3-1 would be a big win to start with. lf you are projecting wins James Madison and UL Monroe are the easiest 2 with Liberty being the hardest. It's us, Coastal Carolina and Liberty as the best 3 conference teams. Louisiana is another tougher game to end the year

                                KSU Debut

                                A Star Emerges Game 1?

The 2nd quarter we get on the board when backup senior QB Tutt making the pass. It was 10 to 3 at halftime. The 2nd half gets started with a terrible pass by starter Lyles (100% my fault). Mayberry ties it with a TD on 3rd and goal at the 1. Lyles bounces back with a nice TD pass thanks to a great block by the HB. The next play we disguise our coverage and LB Sua Mix intercepts it and the drive starts at the 22. A holding call takes points off the board and we play it safe and go up 10 with the FG. We got on the board again with a option TD on a good pitch by Lyles. We get another interception on a big time play by the CB. We score again late on a 1 yard TD pass.

What a debut vs a team rated higher and on the road. The biggest surprise was the defense holding to under 200 yards. A bit of a slow start, but KSU pulls away in the 2nd half. The attention was on the QB and it was a mixed bag from the upside starter Lyles. He had two interceptions, but also throw 2 TD's and made a good pitch on a option. The record holder Tutt also was a change of pace QB and even threw a TD pass. We would expect a 2 QB system to stay for the next few weeks. The player of the game was LB Sua Mix 8 tackles, 4 TFL, 1 sack and 1 Int. He wins national player of the week something we don't remember winning at Army.
