Penguin's entire argument is that all animals are equal, except for everything other than dogs.

It's not a very good argument.

Pitbulls, Rots, German Shepards, Chows, Canny Corsos, etc..that have been bred to be killers are not good for society. What Vick did was sick and atrocious imo, but the dogs that his "employees" eliminated were not normal dogs. Of course, the breeding of those poor dogs to be killers in the first place is extremely atrocious also and it should stop, but once they get to that point you cant exactly "rehabilitate" a dog.

Gonna have to disagree on the German Shepards. Some of the best, most docile, loyal dogs I have ever owned.

Guy did some weak assed ****, got caught and is going to pay the price. End of story.

Hopefully he will learn from this experience and be a better person in the long run.
Don't forget the fact that even with Vick crying out about how he's sorry and he's depressed etc etc he and and his lawyer stone walled the feds. That's not exactly the sign of a contrite person.

Imo, it's all an act. I don't think he's sorry, I don't see him as contrite, I don't think he really is taking responsibility for his actions. Hopefully I am wrong.

You couldn't be more wrong. I would risk my life in order to protect my cat, and I would have done the same to protect my dog.

I'll admit that I make a point not to think about where my food comes from when I eat it, because it will make me feel a little weird. Not enough to stop eating, but kinda creepy if you think of the burger in your hand mooing.

I just draw a line between food behavior and dog fighting. Perhaps I'm a bit sheltered too, just in that I've never seen dog fighting around. People in high school didn't go to dog fights on the weekend. There were drugs, alcohol, the occasional gun, etc but no dog fighting. Just wasn't around me, and I guess that helps make me more against it....

I can understand where Vick was coming from...doesn't make it right, but I can understand.

When all is said and done I think Vick is a good kid at heart, just gets mixed up sometimes, especially with the wrong people.
Yeah I know some things that I try very hard to forget I know... but if anyone drinks a canned soda without wiping off the top first, I pray for you.

By the way, I draw the same line. If they had a law against slitting chicken's throats I think it'd be crazy to punish someone who broke that law the same as a dog fighter. To be honest, I think anyone who is generally outraged by all inhumane treatment of animals has every right to scream how Vick deserves more time, etc. I just don't buy that all these people fit that category. BTW, you'd never want to see dog fighting. I've never seen a fight but I've seen the effects and knew the type of people involved. I guess like everything else it's a bit of a catch 22. Being exposed to the disgusting things that happen in this world make you more aware and are able to be more rational in evaluating things, but it also desensitizes you making things that should be unthinkable easier to accept. Is it better to be ignorant or desensitized? Not quite sure.

And dont get it wrong, I love my dog but its definitely not the same love I have for my daughter(M.K....its to late) or my moms.

And to heighten the amount of contraversy in my postings, I'm willing to bet that alot of dog owners, some in this thread would resue their most prized material possesion than recue the dog if your home caught on fire. I don't own a dog, I just own 1 cat...I wouldn't want to see a cat fighting ring either. Nor do I think cockfighting, bullfighting, or anything like that is good either.

Also, if I'm running out of my house from a fire, i get my family and pets out...I can replace my damn tv, computer, whatever. You can't replace life.

I don't love my pets more than my mom or if I had a child, but there's still love there...Some people do take it to extremes...I couldn't spend thousands upon thousands on vet bills for my pet, there's a limit.

I'll agree to disagree, I just don't see how some people think dog fighting is great, awesome, and a perfectly legitimate SPORT. That's what some think it is, a SPORT, and I just won't ever understand it. I just firmly believe that people shouldn't breed animals just to fight and then kill them. I also dislike those who hunt but don't keep the meat, for what it's worth. As well as those who hunt with way too advanced scopes and crap.

I didn't see Graphik's question about a cat fighting ring. In that case i'd be even more outraged. Cats for the most part are the most docile, kind and sweetest animals you'd ever come across. If some bastard gets off on training cats to be vicious fighters i'd be shocked, horrified and stunned. In that case i'd hope the perp gets 5 years in jail rather then the 2 that Vick got.

I find cruelty to animals for sport or financial gain to be despicable no matter what the animal. Maybe that's just me.

As someone who recently faced wildfires on an unprecedented scale, I can tell you, my dog was the first thing I put in the car as we evacuated. Followed only by photo albums, and important legal document.

Material possessions can easily be replaced, my dog can not.

Just because another animal was not blessed with the same ability doesn't make it any less of an animal. I can use your same argument and try to put value on smart people over stupid people. Let's just have an IQ cutoff. If we make peopel under the IQ of 70 pets, and then raise them to fight and ultimately torture them, so what?

I like your example and question. So you're basically saying humans should be equal to canines? Then why do we lock them in cages, put leashes on them and make them pee outdoors? Why cant they roam about like normal people?

Sorry for answering a question with a question but whatever you wrote of the end is a little of base. Killing another human and comparing that to a human killing a dog is farfetched IMO. Maybe because I dont understand your question but the two dont compare.

And as long as we are the superior species, we will continue to control all who are under us. If you're so for equality amongst animal and man, you should visit the safari and see how long you'll survive when you're out of your element.

I don't think Vick needed more time, i just see so many people trivializing dog fighting like it's not that bad and it kinda concerns me. I can watch horror movies, but it's way different from Saw to actually watching dogs claw each other to death. Kinda sickens me, honestly.
