I simply need to see the numbers on each and get a feel for them before I spend the $.

If I were in your shoes, I'd try and get something that's better than your current set of irons. No sense in spending $900+ on irons when they aren't an improvement over what you have currently.

You have the Callaway X-20 irons, if you're into Callaway irons maybe look into the X Hot Pro irons or the newer 2014 X Hot Pro 2 irons. They have more of a players inspired head shape and size with less offset but still have the forgivingness of a game improvement club.

Here's an X Hot Pro 2 5 iron address picture:

      Spoiler

Taylormade has the Rocketbladez Tour and the new Tour Preferred CB's, Nike has the Covert 2.0 forged clubs, Titlest has the AP2's and Ping has their i20 irons and they just released the upgraded version the i25's. All of those irons bridge the gap between game improvement clubs and players clubs.

Just my two cents. If you want to improve, challenge yourself and move up the ladder in irons. No sense in buying new irons that are pretty much the same as your X 20's.
Agree which is why I'm taking time and making sure I am happy before buying. No way am I buying without hitting first.
Doubt I get a 2014 club as I always get at least a year old club to save some $

basically I want to step up but not spenda fortune either. So we'll see. I still hit the X20's fine but simply want some new toys as there's always that little voice saying "Time to move up"..

I kept looking ate the Razr X's as I knew by Feb they would hit 299.99. Well yesterday they did.
So are you sasying that they aren't a step from the X20's?

Just curious asd I know they are a "SGI" Model and I've had teh X20's for a while.

I'm not a cheap person but don't want to spend 6-700 if I don't have to. Divorce court and all.

The RAZR X's were Callaway's 2011 iron line I believe. Nothing wrong with them per say, the non tour version are pretty similar to the X-20's aside from the lofts and lengths. The X-20's have stronger lofts and are a bit shorter in length than the RAZR X's are. So the RAZR X's will most likely fly farther than the X-20's due to having less loft and being a tad bit longer. (X 20's 5 iron is 27 degrees/ 37.75 inches and the RAZR X's 5 iron is 23 degrees/ 38.5 inches)

As for the RAZR X Tour's, they are what the X Hot and the current X Hot 2 Pro's are based off of, they have been improved upon since 2011 RAZR X line.

Like you said, you have to try out clubs and see what works best for you and your game. Where ever you go to get fit, see if they have Trackman or Flightscope. They will give you the most accurate numbers. I've never 100% trusted golf simulators, but that may just be me.

Here's what I'd say. If you hit the X-20's well to the point where it seems too easy or you rarely mis hit a ball, try moving up into a RAZR X Tour or equivalent iron. They will be plenty forgiving, easy to look at with the thinner top line and have less offset. With a smaller head shape it will make you focus on hitting the middle of the club face more often and not relying on forgiveness to get the ball air borne which in turn will make you into a better ball striker. But they will still offer a lot of help when you do hit a shot in the toe or heel.

I have my share of mis hits.... but overall I hit the X20's well.

All be told I probably don't need anything to be honest.. I just want new ones.

            The OS Golfer's Thread!

Just pulled the trigger on the AP1s. Got fitted and learned that by using a heavier shaft I kept the same club head speed, but my ball speed went from around 111 mph to 125 mph. The PGA pro did my fitting and he was great. Got 5 iron - 48 degree gap wedge(I use a hybrid 4 iron). Also told I needed midsize grips. Can't wait to play these. Guy also offered me a free 60 minute lesson and I will be setting that up after the clubs come in!

              Congrats on the purchase.

I went by Golf Galaxy last night to look at the Ping G20/G25 iron sets. I think I'm gonna roll with the G20's. I just need to decide if I gonna roll 4-Gap wedge or 5- Gap wedge. Longer irons I'm just to inconsistent.

The golf club ho in me is trying to come out again.

Hit the new Taylormade Tour Preferred MB's and MC's yesterday. If i had 1,000$ of disposable cash to part with I would've ordered a combo set of MB's and MC's.

I'm not a Taylormade guy but the new TP line of irons are sexy, especially the MB's. Clean lines, small head, no offset, satin finish. The feel off the face when struck pure was second to none.

I love my AP2's but those Taylormade's were unreal. Must resist the urge to buy irons again for no reason...

So I was looking through the pairing for the PB Pro-Am and playing with Ken Duke is one of the senior executive VPs at my company. Bill Scannell, must be good to have that kind of money.

In order to move up in any company you must have 1 of 3 things (preferably all 3): 1) Know someone high up, 2) be an amazing bull ****ter, 3) be a great amateur golfer.

Yeah the one near me is nice. They have a real PGA pro there which is who is fitting me (hopefully) next week.
                        Can't wait.

Dicks owns Golf Galaxy so maybe that's why (at least in our store) the Golf section people are pretty knowledgable.

Quick question for our lower handicap guys. At my iron fitting I was told I needed heavier shafts True Temper S300. It got me thinking about my graphite shafts. My R1 is at 55 grams and my RBZ Stage 2 is at 60 grams. I think I should go heavier on those two. What do you guys think. Is my reasoning off here?

I would ask at GolfWRX, but I can't post there and their forums have been running slow for me the last few days.

A rule thumb I've used with graphite shaft weighting and shaft weighting in general is the heavier the shaft the slower your swing speed will be which will lead to more control of the club head and make your shots more consistent. A lighter shaft will allow you to swing the club faster which equals more club head speed but you could become less accurate due to the club itself being lighter and you won't be able to feel the club head through the swing.

If you're someone who has a fast swing tempo, going to a light shaft will hurt your game, more than help. Heaver shafts like I said allow for a more controlled swing due to it's heavier weighting. But if your swing tempo is slow it can cause the same effects as a fast tempo player using a lighter shaft.

Different weighted shafts can also affect swing weight of a club. If you go with a heavier shaft combined with the weight of the club head and grip, it could become even heavier and cause more problems, vice versa with lighter shafts.

In the end, it really is a matter of personal preference. Getting fit for a driver or fairway woods can and will help to determine what weight shaft to use as it can effect club head speed, tempo, spin rates, kick points, launch angles, etc. Too many variables involved with graphite shafts.

For me I use a 60 gram shaft in my driver and 82 gram shafts in my 3 and 5 wood. I usually swing my driver around 100-110mph depending on how I feel any given day. I have a lighter shaft in my because I want to maximize my distance off the tee, but I do sacrifice a bit of accuracy.

My fairway woods have the heavier shafts because they're clubs I want to be accurate with, not be distance machines.

I'd say go to a fitter and try out a driver with different shaft options with different weights and compare numbers and how they feel when you swing. Only then will you know which is right for you. Welcome to the world of golf shafts, one of the hardest pieces of equipment to get right.

Would it make sense for me to have my self fitted since I'm still a beginner golfer? Or should I just focus on working on my weaker points? Also, how much should a fitting cost?

I would say, build a solid foundation first before spending money on custom fitting. Establish a consistent swing that you can build a new set of clubs around.
