So I got another hole in one...but it doesn't count because I shanked the first tee shot into the water. Dammit!

Ended up shooting a 104 today. So tantalizingly close. Stupid putting, once again

I'm kind of curious about trying this out. Did you order it online or did you have a local store that carries these?

The store. I never buy anything golf related online.

Hey guys just wanted to say hi. Just joined the forums. I was referred to you guys and wanted to join your club and discussion. I play golf and my handicap is around 8 right now. Broke my gap wedge last time I played, but it's all good.

Finally did it. Shot a 97 this morning. BUT, big time caveat is that it's only a par 67 and 5000 yard course, so it's pretty short. There isn't a single par 5 throughout. Still, it feels absolutely amazing to finish 18 holes with a score not in the triple digits. I'm beyond pumped right now!

Even better, this is probably my last round for at least a month. Started a new job this week and I'm going to be flying out for training for 4 weeks. So today kind of signified the "end" of my first summer golf season. I'll obviously try to keep playing as much as I can throughout the fall and winter, but man it feels great to finish things up this way.

Now the next goal will be to try and duplicate this on a more "normal" or average course.

              Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Got out for another 18 holes after about a month layoff. Started off slow, but man, something clicked after about 12-13 holes with my game off of the tee and from 100 yards out. My short game has always been decent, atleast better and more consistent than my long game. But today, after making some adjustments, I was hitting some BOMBS off the tee, and with absolutely no slice. The adjustment also helped my mid game as well with my irons.

It's amazing how one little chink in the armor can throw your whole game off. I realized that I was too lax in the shoulders when I addressed the ball. The only thing I changed was stiffening up my shoulders a bit and flattening the club face out before starting my swing. What resulted was an elimination of the shanks and slices that had plagued my round up until then, and I started hitting the ball well consistently.

My score wasn't great by any means (107 I believe), but I am all about taking away "little" victories in golf. Today, it was the mid to long range game, which is usually the most inconsistent part of my game.

Now i'm itching to get back out, and unfortunately, the year is almost over as far as golf goes.

                Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Yeah my year is about done as well. Played a round today, par 62 course again, shot 71. Was my first round of golf since September 13th. There's just too much rain coming down to golf on a consistent basis now. Typical Vancouver weather.

So it's now time to hit the range from now until March and get to work on a few things. Working on my driver was my main goal this past off season, both distance and consistency. It was probably one of the main reasons I broke 80 this year. Being able to keep the ball in play and not having to waste a stroke or two getting out of trouble really made a difference on my scorecard.

This off season I'm going to work on my ball striking and iron consistency. My biggest issue playing this year was accuracy and GIR's. Just wasn't able to hit GIR's on a consistent basis as well as hitting my irons flush on a consistent basis.

Last off season I went to the range about 3 times a week hitting about 200 balls per day. I'm planning to go twice a week, hitting 200 balls per day this off season. So I'll be hitting around 1600 iron shots a month for about 6 months. Hopefully the hard work pays off!

Playing in a big tournament next Sunday with people from various skill levels at my home course, about a mile down the street. Trying to finish in the top 20 out of 30 or so. Better than that would be great!

I've been really hammering the range of late, likely because I feel the impending turn of the weather toward the sh*tty that is inevitable this time of year. My biggest flaw has always been hitting long irons, so I've basically been hitting 200+ long iron shots every other day for the past few weeks, and it's definitely paying off. But the process is slow, man...one day I'll go out and stripe everything and think I have it figured out, then I'll go the very next day, feel like I'm doing the same exact thing, and chili-dip every single darn ball. So it's still a long way away from the consistency that you need for it to be useful on the course. I mean, as you guys all know, the last thing you can afford to do is be at whatever a 3-4 iron range is for you and wonder whether the ball is going on the green or into the fairway 2 holes over...

One of the things for me that I need to work on this off-season is having a swing that doesn't rely so much on "feel", because when it's on and you feel good it's great, but on days you feel weird or "off", there's just no way to recover. If you have a swing that is just basic and mechanical, it's so much more reliable. I have no idea how to accomplish that, though....

Don't make your swing feel 100% mechanical. With Mechanical swings I find you become so fixated on certain things that a swing is no longer a swing. A swing should be repeatable without ever thinking about what you're doing. I related it to driving a manual drive car. You don't think about shifting gears, you just do it naturally. That's how a golf swing should feel.

You shouldn't have to think about how you take the club away, how much body rotation you have or how you start your down swing. Try and make your swing as simple as possible. The more thoughts you have in your head, the more difficult it will become to fine tune your swing. Believe me, I got caught up in trying to find the perfect swing. Recording myself, looking at how I took the club away, where the club finished, etc. I was never getting the results and quite honestly my swing got WORSE rather than better. Started to develop bad habits and decided to just swing based on my feel.

For me now it's probably 70% feel and 30% mechanical. Not saying mechanical is bad, there does have to be consistency with how you "do" your swing. All I'm trying to say is don't get sucked in like MANY people do with trying to find that perfect swing.

Start with your natural swing and go from there. That's what I did and that's how I ultimately broke 80 this year.

Good advice. I definitely don't want to get too mechanical, but I do want a repeatable swing that doesn't just rely on 'feel' all the time. The problem is that my natural swing is deeply flawed - it sort of "looks" good (if that makes any sense) on film, but there are 1-2 things that cause the ball to go all over the park if I'm off just a fraction on a given day, so the goal is to try to get to a point where a decent swing path and contact point feel natural, and then I'll be able to swing that way going forward.

I think at first, when you're trying to correct basic things (out-to-in swing plane, chicken-wing, etc), it feels awkward and mechanical, but if you do it enough it starts to feel more natural. I hope that's the case, anyway. But I hear what you're saying about too many swing thoughts and getting caught up in hitting 'positions', etc....that's how Charles Barkley ended up with his swing when he used to be nearly a scratch golfer...

I should really start thinking about wearing something other than golf shorts now that it's 40 degrees outside.

Finally starting to get back into it now that I've been back from training for a while. It's taking me some time to get adjusted, as I came back and started shanking things left and right. Strangely enough, the driver has been the most consistent and I can't hit the irons to save my life. Go figure.

My season has come to a close as well. Ended the year with a 4 birdie round 80. Too bad I blew up on a couple holes.

Made $1025 in skins and tournament winnings this year, so that was a nice year. Can't wait for the Spring.
