Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Last year I got new Callaway Razr X irons and loved them until very recently. I used to hit everything dead straight with my irons and now i can't hit the ball where I'm aiming. Everything is dead straight or a slice but pushed severely to the right. It's very discouraging I feel like I've never played golf before (Played since I was 8). Anyone have the same issue or know of a way to fix it? That's always my problem with playing too often is that I pick up loads of bad habits and turn my swing into something completely different.
I have a slice with my woods and drivers but I've already considered that a lost cause.
1. Where are your hands placed when you grip the club? If your thimbs are straight down the shaft, move your right thumb to the right side of the grip so you can see a little bit of your palm.
2. Put a tee about 6 inches behind your ball and when you take your swing away make sure your club comes inside the tee and doesn't touch it, then swing out to 1 O,Clock.
3. Tell yourself to take a 75% backswing (You'll end up at 95%, maybe 100%, trust me) and watch the ball through impact.
4. Put the money in the tip jar. Your slice is gone. If you are over drawing the ball, just slowly gravitate the first 2 steps back to your original starting point.Chalepa Ta Kala.....Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Broke my driver as I mentioned a few posts back. I'm looking to get a new big stick - any recommendations? I know this stuff is all highly personal, but just generally wondering what people are hitting. I haven't bought a driver in many, many years (had 2 hand-me-downs that lasted 5-6 years each, so it's been a decade easily since I looked into this stuff).
I don't think I need the latest and greatest (wouldn't help me anyway), and in general, my philosophy with golf equipment is to get 2-3 year old models new on clearance. But like I said, I'm just interested in general to see what woods you guys are hitting and what you like that you've tried lately.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Turned in an 80 this morning before heading out this evening. Played a links style course that I've never played before. Slow play on the front, so I played with a couple older guys for the last 12 holes. The one who kept score went to me when we were headed up 17 "kid you know what you're shooting on the back?" I had a general idea. Shot a 38 on the back for my best 9 hole and 18 overall score in quite some time. I pared the first 4 on the back, no birdies, but had two bogies. Hit 13 of 14 fairways and took 24 putts. I'm more than pleased. Now hopefully the play carries into the evening round.St. Louis Cardinals | Milwaukee Bucks | Los Angeles Rams

You can get the SLDR for $199. Got one this year and am just killing it off the tee.
Pro Tip: Get fitted for the R15 and apply the weight distribution to the SLDR.Moderator

Next time your at the range just do a whole bunch of slow practice swings getting the feeling your hands on going into your trail pocket. Your hands physically won't be going there, but it's the feeling you want to focus on. It worked for me and should hopefully work for you.

Don't buy a 913 whatever you do, horrible driver IMO.Xbox LIVE GT: oALEXtheGREATo

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
When I had a horrible slice many years ago my key swing thought was putting my hands into my trail pocket on my downswing. Did this constantly on the range for weeks until I started to produce a draw. I can play a draw at will now but playing a fade is really difficult for me. I'll setup to hit a fade but just hit it straight lol.

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Thanks for the advice guys! After looking a few things up I went to the range the other day and tried to focus on keeping my swing inside (I'm assuming that's what you mean by keeping your hand it in your trail pocket) kind of leveling my shaft over my toes and I'm starting to see some improvement. I hooked 1 ball out of my 50 so I see that as an improvement. I'd honestly be happy to start hooking the ball it just is so hard for me. I could totally put my trail hand before my lead hand and I'll hit it straight, but not hooked, very frustrating.
Use the closed stance in the image below. play the ball off your front toe.

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
I picked up a set of Taylormade Rocketbladez HL Irons last week.. At the shop on the simulator, and at the range the day after, LOVED them. Everything about them. The 9 and PW are higher lofted than my old irons, so the height I was getting on those shots, and the loss of a few yards distance had me a bit concerned.
Went out and played 18 Saturday... Struggled mightly. I couldn't hit anything right. My swing was all out of whack, and I just couldn't figure it out, or fix it before frustration set in. Finally around 13 I started playing a bit better. I was slicing, I had some snap hooks to the left off the tee. I got every unlucky bounce I could imagine. It was just... brutal.
I'm heading to a little golf resort up in Michigan this weekend, and I thought of leaving the Taylormades at home and bringing my old irons. Especially since I hate the stock grips on the new Taylormades. I went out and played 9 last night at a little par 3 close to home to get some iron work in. I fell in love with those clubs all over again. The feel in them is fantastic. The higher lofts in them, especially the 9 and PW... initially a concern of mine, not so much anymore. Everything just sticks to the greens. My old set I always had a problem getting my approach shots to bite. I'd hit the green, and they'd just take off. Not with these clubs.
So I'm pretty confident I'm going to bring them.
As for my driver... I hit some at the range after my little round yesterday. I went back to my old tried and true swing off the tee of a slower swing, and really only about a 75% swing. It sucks giving up that power and extra distance I'm capable of, but this Nike Covert driver I bought last year is killing me. I just can't get it figured out yet.Miami Dolphins - Detroit Red Wings - Toronto Blue Jays - Michigan Wolverines - CANADAComment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
I love my Titleist 910 D2. Best driver I've ever hit. I've many drivers in the past but I always go back to my 910. The sound, the feel and just the forgiveness is top notch. Pair it with the right shaft and the thing is money. Mine is a fairway finding machine and I feel like I can go at it 110% and not lose control.
Don't buy a 913 whatever you do, horrible driver IMO.
The only major brand I personally stay away from for drivers/woods is Nike (I used to have Nike irons though and they were good) and I'm kinda 'meh' about Cobra. Otherwise whatever you can hit, you can hit.Last edited by CC; 07-16-2015, 12:58 PM.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
I have a 913. I use it and don't have any problems with it. If I'm playing any course that is at least relatively forgiving and it's a competitive round it's in my bag, I hit it better than my R15 (I've had it longer but still). And further than my Cleveland 598 just a little looser than it. I usually use my Cleveland on really tight courses because it's very forgiving. Still figuring out my R15.

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Thanks for the opinions, guys. Will swing by the ol' golf shop tomorrow and see what I can find.
Agree about Nike drivers, though...never hit a Nike iron, but based on the driver, I have no idea how they stay in the golf club biz. I've never actually even played with anyone that plays Nike clubs, as far as I can recall.Comment

I've never played their irons before, but a friend of mine has a set of nike irons, and he loves them. , he's had them for about 7 years now. He's going to be in the market next year for new ones, and he's said he'd give them a shot again.
Different strokes for different folks I guess.Last edited by brandon27; 07-16-2015, 02:17 PM.Miami Dolphins - Detroit Red Wings - Toronto Blue Jays - Michigan Wolverines - CANADAComment
