I'm looking for a new ball, as the ball I use now(Callaway Chrome) is done for. Any other ball suggestions are appreciated!

Those are some high spin balls. If you struggle with side spin off your driver be careful and bring some extra balls. Real easy to lose it off the tee.

That said they do some nice work around the greens. Those the Z-Star and Pro V1 are the only balls I can get to check up and spin back on occasion.

      Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

I like Titleist NXT Tour. They are a more solid ball than the Pro V1's and I get some more distance with them and seem to be able to control them better than the softer balls. I hit a pretty high ball so getting them to stop on the green really isn't an issue. I do get some spin with them with my wedges but its more of the "hat dance" variety where they will barely move and hop forward about 6 inches then come back to where they landed from 60 to 90 yards it looks like the ball hops from side to side when it lands about 6 inches off the ground.

I don't pinch my shot enough to get the spin back. My neighbor uses Pro V1 and gets the two hop stop and pull the string approach shots. Really fun to watch, but I've seen him get screwed by doing that pulling it back 15 feet when he didn't want to.

But yeah, if you really pinch the ball, Pro V1's are the way to go.

        Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

So I got a quick swing tweak for my driver from my uncle, who's almost a scratch golfer, and we played 18 at a private course with the fastest greens in Connecticut (besides where they have the Travelers Championship). I played well but didn't score as well as I would have liked. So last night, I go back to my home course and play 13 holes (until it got dark). It was the hottest, most humid day we've had so far, and after not being able to hit good iron shots for the first 6 holes, I stepped it up. I was +1 over the last 7, saving two pars on the last two holes with my shirt and shorts soaked to the bone with sweat.

I use Srixon Z Stars. I know I'm in the minority but I think they're a better ball than ProV. I have Titleist irons and a Titleist Driver so I don't say this just to hate on Titleist, I encourage anyone who plays ProV1 or any other similar ball to try out Zstars.

Also if anyone is looking for a good cheaper ball, Callaway Supersofts are awesome for the price. I have a box of pink ones that I won that I've been busting out for ****s and giggles, but its the best soft ball I've ever hit.

I usually hit whatever balls I find in the bushes while trying to find my own ball.

I use the Taylormade Tour Preferred X Ball. Best ball out there hands down. It feels great, spins like crazy around the greens and is a monster of a ball off the tee.

Here's an article that was just released about me golfing with my disability. Thought you guys may want to check it out. I have played 53 rounds this summer and I have my index down to 16.9. Not great, but not too bad for a guy in my condition!

I am the lesson after the fall.

Looking for some opinions on wedges. Right now I currently have a PW with my irons and added a 56 degree wedge. Now I'm looking to add some to my bag. I have room to add two more clubs. I'm just curious what degrees you guys play.

I'm debating between adding a 52 and a 58, and pull my 56. Or to buy a 52 and 60, and keep my 56. Not really sure what to do right now.

Also does anyone know much about the Nike Engage wedges? Not entirely sure what the difference is between the different models, as all three have a 58 and 60.

                    I carry a Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, 5 iron, 6, 7,8,9, PW, Utility wedge, 56,58,60 and a putter.

I like to take a full swing with my wedges. I'd rather be 75 yards out than 40 yards out. The 75 is a full swing with my 60, 83 for my 58, 90 with my 56. I feel pretty good hitting that utility wedge anywhere from 95 to 120. Its all what you feel most comfortable with. The course I play, most of the par 4's are between 390 and 430 yards, except for 3 of them so wedges don't usually come into play but we do play some tournaments where you pick 6 form the red, 6 from the white and 6 from the black when I play from the shorter tees, I still make sure I put myself a full swing out based on the length above.

The key is to always put yourself in a position to make a full swing. When I miss the green I always turn to my 60. I never will intentionally put myself 40 yards out, for whatever reason that's a lot harder shot for me to put close than a shot from 75+.

So I guess you have to ask yourself when will you use these clubs? If you find yourself hitting driver and then one of these wedges into the greens a lot than its worth adding more wedges, but if you are hitting driver and then longer irons into the greens, you might want to add more clubs to the bottom of your bag like some hybrids or woods to give you a shot to reach on par 5's or par 4's where you mi**** your drive.

I carry a 52, 56 and 60 degree wedge. My bag make up goes:

Driver, 3 wood, 4 hybrid, 4-PW, 52, 56, 60. I mainly have the 52 degree wedge to somewhat cover my distance gap from my PW to my 56. My 56 and 60 see the most action as those are the yardages I usually layup to.

As for the Nike engage wedges, the different soles allow for the club to open and closed for different types of shots.

The Square Sole is for people who play shots with the wedge sitting square. Basically it's your stock wedge with no real sole/ grind options.

Toe Sweep mostly bunker shots and shots from the rough. It allows the club face to sit flat and stay open through bunker shots, shots from the rough and even the most tight of lies.

The Dual Sole is the most versatile wedge. It allows the club to sit square and open. It's your "all in one" wedge so to speak but it doesn't stand out in any category. If you wanted a wedge for bunkers, the Toe Sweep would perform better than the Dual Sole, whereas the Dual Sole would perform better with a square face than the Toe Sweep.

The wedges are also raw, meaning there's no coating on the metal to prevent rust. The Nike Engage wedges are built to rust over time.

I've fooled around with them but I'll always end up sticking with my Vokey's.

                      -----------

Wedges are a finicky thing. What kind of courses do you play on? Soft fairways or hard fairways? Tight lies or lush lies. Hard sand or soft sand? What kind of shots do you normally like to play? High flops or short shots that spin? A lot of though goes into selecting wedges.

                        Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

A PW is usually 45-50 depending on the club. If given the choice between those two options, I'd rather carry pw, 56, 60 than pw, 52, 58. One less club to buy too. More shots I can hit with those.

                        I carry a PW (50), 54, 58, 62. (D, 1i, 3-9i, P) when club limit is enforced.

Wish I could help with those Nike wedges but haven't hit them. Used to have VRs irons that I loved though. Honestly, I can hardly tell the difference between the Titleist, Cleveland, and Ping wedges in my bag in terms of feel and performance, so I'd assume most other top brands would be similar. I would say to try other clubs and most of all the club you are talking about because Nike isnt the first brand that comes to mind when talking about wedges.

                          Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Appreciate the info guys. I just had been getting the itch to add to my bag, and wedges seem to be the best place. Right now I have a driver, 3 wood, 2 and 3 hybrid, 4-PW, and putter. I plan on pulling my 3 wood, as I haven't used it in over 2 years, I've become happier using my 2 hybrid, which has a graphite shaft anyways, so pretty much plays like a 5 wood. I've recently swapped drivers, as I hadn't played mine in as long as my 3 wood, I changed from stiff shaft to regular shaft, but the majority of the courses I play a 3 wood wouldn't really be an advantage over the 2H. Mainly courses with harder fairways, my game hasn't put me in horribly tight lies, softer sand.

I'm leaning towards adding as many wedges as I can, since that's become a big success the older I get. I've developed more of a flop shot that checks up with my PW and 56 in the last year or so, but there is definitely a gap between those two clubs, so I'm thinking a 52 is inevitable. I was just never sure if I'd be able to hit a 60 degree. But I might try to add it just to give myself more versatility coming into the green.

As for Nike, I've played it my entire, now 9 year, golf career, minus my beginner sets, so I'm still hung up on them and not ready to switch brands, although a Scotty Cameron putter ended up in my bag this spring, so it could be a slow transition. I figure I have a little time before I switched, as I'm just 24 (today actually), but I'll eventually more entirely to titleist, I'm just not ready yet. Hah

I like Nike clubs as well, but my bag is pretty much all Titleist. 910 D2 driver, 910F 3 Wood, Taylormade 2009 Rescue Hybrid, Titleist 712 AP2, and SM4 Vokey Wedges. Titleist clubs are simple and perform, and they look nice too!

I carry a PW, SW, 56-deg, and that's it. From time to time I think a 60-deg can be useful, but in general, anything that's too long for a 56 to reliably get to for me (>100yds) I can cover w/ a PW or SW. I just don't like the 90-100 yd range because sometimes a 56-deg comes up short there (for me) but it's hard for me to find that range with a SW or PW.

BTW, the PW is part of a Titleist 804 set, SW is Wilson, 56 is a Vokey.

A new PW unaltered is generally 45 degrees in loft, and a Gap Wedge is around 50. They did this because of the creation of sand and lob wedges.
