I'll try that out. A lot of times, I feel like when I try to come from the inside, I start hitting really thin shots that border on straight-up tops. It's a work in progress (like everyone else) I guess.

I haven't posted here in forever, mainly because I never get out anymore; but I still lurk.

But since nobody else pointed it out I had to. What a call by you! Nicely done, sir.

        Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Well, my competitive golf season is just about winding down. Played in the big money 2 man a week ago and we got it handed to us. It was crazy, we had a calcuta auction where you bid on teams and some teams went for over a grand, our team went for 675. All told there was over $15,000 in the prize pot.

Unfortunately we didn't rise up. What can you do. It was handicapped and in one match we were giving strokes to a guy that shot a 35 while his partner wasn't really even in any hole except 1. Next match I shot a 38 my partner didn't play well and we lost 5-4. On a positive we tied the match with the team that won it and then blew out the 2nd place team and put them out of the money. Another match we got birdied on the first two holes and played even the rest of the way.

I came in as an 8 handicap and my partner a 6 and all the teams in the bracket had combined handicaps of 13 to 17 so we were pretty evenly matched, but we just didn't make enough birdies. Par basically ties or loses a hole in the best ball.

Then yesterday I played in the year end big money skins game. Played horrible but had 1 magic birdie that netted me $400. It was rainy and windy. 2 holes prior I had flew the green from 165 with an 8 iron. So the wind was whipping after playing a hole into the stiff breeze I played another hole down wind. 425 yard par 4. Pumped a 290 yard drive into the rough on the left hand side but had a good lie and 137 to go. That's usually a soft 9 or a flush PW so I grabbed my PW and thought I'd try to hit that about 90%, then at the last second I changed my mind and decided to lean on a gap wedge. Put it to 8 feet and made the putt. Got just over $300 for the skin and an extra $100 bonus for winning the most skin money this year so I walked with $400 yesterday and over $1200 for the season. Not bad, that made me feel a little better from the performance a week ago.

You guys on this forum are good golfers. I'm envious...

So I looked at video of my swing and realized I had gotten way too flat (in a poor attempt to come more from the inside). So I've gotten back to a more normal looking swing-plane, but then I realized why that happened in the first place - any time my swing gets even semi-upright (not upright by any normal standard, but what anyone else would consider a "normal" plane), I start slicing the ball pretty badly.

I think I'm going to have to look at the way my shoulders and hips are working, because this side-swiping of the ball just ain't gonna cut it when I finally get back on the course (I've stayed off the course for the past few weeks while trying to work out my swing problems). But the never-ending quest to figure out how to groove an inside swing plane continues...

BTW, for those familiar w/ northern Michigan, any recommendations for the Traverse City area? I've played The Bear and that's a nice one, but other than the Grand Traverse courses, would be interested in any suggestions for places within ~30-45 min drive.

Go play Lochen Heath before it goes full on private. Where do you live?

California, but meeting some old friends before summer ends. Michigan is the home state, though I haven't lived there in over a decade - always will be!

Thanks for the recommendation - will check it out if possible.

Check Bay Harbor too. There is a ton of great golf within 30 miles of Traverse City.

                  Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Went out Friday right after work jumped out of the car and right to the tee box. They started us out on the back. Pulled my first drive and chunked a few shots on the first few holes but then caught my groove about the time the cart girl talked us into a shot of fireball on the 5th hole. I was ripping my drives to make a long story short I made the turn and caught fire.

                  Hole 1 - 411 yards Driver PW 15 feet - 2 putt par
                  Hole 2 - 390 uphill Driver 9 iron 12 feet - 2 putt par
Hole 3 - 394 Driver 9 iron - 8 feet - 2 putt par ball mark landed 1 foot right infront of pin
Hole 4 - 366 yards - Driver gap wedge 8 feet bender 2 putt par - Ball mark 1 foot right of pin
                  Hole 5 - 597 Driver 7 wood Gap wedge 15 feet 2 putt par
Hole 6 - 172 but pin was in back so playing 185 - five iron 25 foot putt - 2 putt par
                  Hole 7 - 470 uphill par 5 Driver 5 wood 10 foot putt - Eagle Yay I made 1.
                  Hole 8 - 160 yards pin pack playing 170 - 6 Iron to 20 feet 2 putt par
                  Hole 9 - 340 par 4 Driver Gap wedge 15 feet 2 putt par

Finished 8 pars and an eagle for a 34. Every driver in the fairway, every approach shot on the green. It's too bad I didn't drain more putts I really could have gone low.

I hate to see this season winding down. Hands down the best golf I've ever played this season. I'm making it a goal to play in the county open next season and see if I can hang with the big boys. Might have to switch from the NXT Tour to the Pro V1, having 2 balls be dead on the pin and roll out to 8 to 10 feet was a bit disappointing.

1 area that I really need work on is the irons from 6 on down. The long irons get away from me, but the driver and 7 iron through wedges are rock solid, I can go after pins all day long.

Dang, fist - nice shooting, man.

I had 2 days in the 90's. After shooting in low 80's last 2 weeks, these high scores came as a surprise. My swing escaped me quite rapidly, it was not pretty. I felt bad for my dad as he experienced the same thing. We played Saturday at a pretty nice course, I shot 97, he at 99. It was cart-path only which didn't help his knee ailments as well. Yesterday, he wanted to play in the afternoon - which is unheard of because we always play in the weee early mornings. Finished the round with a 90 and he with a 97. Our swings escaped us again, and now it's virtually gone. No idea what's going on. Need to get the range, pronto!

Just focus on getting your tempo back. I can't stress enough that the best piece of advice I ever received was take your back swing back 75% and keep your eye on the ball through impact. You'll be in so much better balance. And you'd be surprised if someone films you, your club will go back pretty close to 100% and parallel.

Hm, that's actually great advice. I will work on that asap. I always scoffed at my dad when he said "keep your head down" on my chips and pitches, because I'm the golf affecianado afterall :/ and I know it's my Spine angle that is lifting. However, once I started to actually listening to him and focused on keeping my head down, I started chipping so much better. I know it's a cliche saying of his and a misunderstood one, but I thought it was funny that it worked so well in terms of the mental note to keep.

I'll keep my eyes focused on the ball through impact. Let me ask you, do you ever look further ahead of the ball the whole time? This is what youtube guru (?) Darrell Klassen says to do...I haven't really given it a go though.

If you cut the top of the ball into quadrants, I focus specifically on the bottom right quadrant of the ball through impact. Just a tip I received back when I played on my HS team that stuck and works for me. It helps remind me to feel like I'm coming from the inside out.

I understand what he's saying, but I would never try to explain that to somebody in that fashion. What I would say is still keep your eye on the ball through impact and finish the swing. I try to swing out towards 1 o'clock as a right handed golfer. He's got that box at like 10 o'clock. I'm going to erase that guy from my memory. He'd have me hitting a pull skull. And I don't like his pleated khakis.

But yeah, I had an old swing coach that would put an alignment stick(driveway marker for people in the north) in the ground about 3 or 4 feet away from me at 1 o'clock and tell me to try to reach for that on the follow through. Regardless nothing is going to matter if you don't make solid contact. So I would concentrate on 75% backswing, eyes on the ball through impact, reach out to 1 o'clock. This makes you take a more inside route to the ball and gets your arms extended so you don't frog arm the ball or come around instead of through.

Back to that guys videos though, I watched another one about hitting the box, he gets excellent lag. Problem is, his instruction isn't going to help because he's not totally explaining what he needs to happen. Go out and skip a stone in a river. You will notice you need to turn your body first, right arm drops and then you rip through like a short stop turning a double play. But back to making solid contact, 75%, eyes on the ball. If you want more power and distance, go watch this guy, but I bet you will get the extra distance you need because you'll be in balance flushing the shot on the clubface.

Question about this. Everytime I try to focus on doing this, I seem to end up with a push slice. If I understand correctly, this means my clubface isn't getting squared up at impact or I'm not releasing the club properly in combination with swinging inside out right?

My guess would be that you are taking the club back outside the ball. Put a tee about 6 inches behind the ball and bring your backswing on the inside of that tee. You shouldn't be able to slice it then.

Of course before you mess with your swing check your grip. If you are right handed give yourself a strong grip with the right thumb on the right side of the grip
