I think Direct TV remotes work with all their boxes though, not sure about that. There would have to be something you could do though.

        HDTV compatibility is 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i

        PC Compatibility is at 1366X768

Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread

I didn't really know where to post this, so I am gonna give this area a shot.

I just recently got a Dell XPS 700 system that is maxed out for work, with the 24 inch Ultrabright Widescreen Monitor. It has all kinds of video hook ups. I have an old xbox system that we use at work for when we have some down time. (We are a print shop). The monitor has component hookups and I went out and got the XBOX component cables to hook this puppy up. We have the Bose double speaker set with the additional line in hooked up with those components so we get sound as well without have to go thru a video card or anything. If you can tell, I am not so savy with the technical stuff.

We turn it on and it looks great. But, there is all sorts of jaggies. I tried turning down contrast and brightness and things I could do with the monitor itself. I believe the resolution of the monitor can go like 1900 x 1200 (read that somewhere).

On the xbox I turned it to widescreen and I enabled all the HD options.

Here is my question. What setting should I have this on for optimal picture. I have never seen madden look and play so good, even with the jaggies. Mind you I play 2004 cause I can't stand the new crap. Who the hell canplay veritical football. But, Is there something I am doing wrong, or do the cables suck? Any help would be much appreciated.

          Thanks

If you're using the original xbox it will have jaggies.

A new Costco just opened, and we joined today. Found that for a $30 price difference, I could upgrade to a 32".

              Vizio L32HDTV

Only $699 at Costco. I just did the exchange, and am pretty pleased. I can't get the VGA to completely fill the screen, so I end up with about a 31" diagonal on the Xbox.

You'll be happy with the Vizio IMO. What I've seen of them, they are very nice.

Any general tips on getting SDTV to look halfway decent?

Just looks blurry and washed out. I'm messing with the settings, and looking at AVS ... but still can't get it looking good yet.

Watch SD on a different TV?

If you are using a cable box, make sure you output SD at 480i, since the cable box likely does a worse job of scaling then your TV (best bet is a "Pass Through" setting, though not all of them have one).

Are you watching the 4:3 SD stretched or with the bars on the side? That might help as well.

I think you'll just find that you watch HD a lot more due to the crappy SD. I find myself watching a bunch of nature shows with my wife now on PBS, and the news I get online (our primary SD viewing). The only SD we view now is Spongebob, which my son really enjoys.

Are you using a cable box with a DVR? I noticed that my cable box/DVR combo makes the image look worse than if I were to run a line directly to my TV (antenna 1).

I ended up splitting a cable in one of my bedrooms, running it down through a wall and then hooking that to the ANT 1 port on my TV. Of course it's a different input than my HD signal so I have to change to that input if I want a better picture. It also functions as my PIP. The reason I didn't split the cable that was running into my cable box/DVR is that I was afraid it would decrease the signal too much (I was able to test this through some service menu settings in the cable box/DVR).

I have noticed that my PVR has degraded the image as well. The weird thing is that some channels look much better than others. For example: TBS doesn't look bad at all, whereas ABC looks pretty bad.

I'm stretching it, because when comparing it to the 4:3 there's little difference in quality.

I am running through a PVR, and might cut it out of the loop. Truth is, I don't use it much - we record most stuff on the main family room TV.

I have a DirecTV receiver, and an old first-gen TiVo. I was running the whole thintg off coax, but switched it to composite, and that seemed to help a bit. It still doesn't look crisp, but it's an improvement.

I had looked at that one. Actually, I had looked at the 50" model. The opinions in here kind of swayed me that getting a tv with 1080p wasn't really necessary right now since no one broadcasts in it? Now, the Sony KDF50A2000 50" LCD, which is a 720p HD, looked pretty sweet at the store, but I ended up settling on the Samsung DLP 50" and am loving it so far. There wasn't much of a difference between the Sony and Samsung from what I could tell. That Sony looks like a great tv though, Heel, but it was a little more than I was willing to spend. You might be a different story though.
