HD DVD Backer Weinstein Goes MIA; Speculation Mounts

With no releases or announcements from the Weinstein Company in over four months, speculation is mounting that there are changes afoot for the HD DVD exclusive distributor.

Although the well-regarded indie had been among the HD DVD camp's most high-profile exclusive studio partners, releasing nearly a dozen titles over the first six months of this year (including 'Clerks II,' 'Lucky Number Slevin' and 'Scary Movie 4'), the studio has been uncharacteristically quiet in recent months.

In fact, we haven't heard a peep from Weinstein on the next-gen front since the studio's June 12 HD DVD releases of 'Harsh Times' and 'Black Xmas.'

Could the studio be re-evaluating its HD DVD exclusivity stance? That's the current speculation among industry insiders and fans alike.

We recently brought the question to the studio itself, asking a Weinstein spokesperson to comment on the ongoing rumors, but his response seems likely to only add fuel to fire. "We aren’t commenting on our High-Def plans at this time" was the only word back from the studio.

So what's cooking? Darned if we know, but with such highly anticipated next-gen titles as 'Grindhouse' and '1408' waiting in the wings, here's hoping the studio will break its silence sometime soon.
There was a strong rumor during the summer that Weinstein would go format neutral with a release of Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair. Further complicating things is how they allowed Hard Boiled to be released on blu-ray (via a PS3 game, Stranglehold).

Pretty interesting how New Line is snubbing HD DVD with late releases and giving day-and-dates for blu-ray, and Weinstein slowly becoming MIA. Hmm..

For months it has been weird with Weinstein which is driving many nuts since they have some very good movies that people want on hidef format. Even if they go neutral or even switch to Bluray, I wish they would do something soon. I want to see movies like 1408, Unknown, Kill Bill, Halloween Remake, Grindhouse, and Hanibal Rising to name a few.

Yeah, even New Line seems to have decided with which side their going with their releases. Maybe they know something about the upcoming holidays that many of us don't.

Wal-Mart Stocks Sub-$200 HD DVD Player

Disc Sales: Blu-ray Squeaks Weekly Win Against 'Transformers' HD DVD

Man on Fire is coming to Blu-Ray, January 8, 2008

So..the thing many HD DVD bots at Hi Def's forums said would kill blu-ray is here (decent sub-$200 stand-alones).

Slayer, I posted that pic a few days ago about Walmart carrying the sub $200 players a few pages back. The kicker of it all, is that these aren't just decent players either........its the Toshiba A2 which is pretty good showcasing HD-DVd movies and does an excellent job on upconverting. Only thing that stinks is that its 1080i highest resolution, but this player is their second gen player. I can't wait for the 3rd gen players drop to this price.

In hindsight, these aren't even the chinese players that are going to cost $170......imagine if these are at $198, how much will the chinese players come in at, maybe $150.

                Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread

There has been a $200 or less price point entry into HD DVD for almost a year.

Price isn't the main problem, awareness is.

I wouldn't count the HD-DVD player since this is about stand alone players.

Are you joking me, they just hit the under $200 price point and just hit the $227-$250 price point right before summer. Trust me, I bought the A2 back in March at the cheapest price possible at the time which was under $400.......and the first gen players were hovering $300 at that time. So the awareness level is not something that is missing on this end.

I'm guessing he means the HD-DVD add on, because other than that, I don't know of any under $200 either.

I'm thinking the same thing since the stand alone did start hitting the mid $200 range until beginning of Summer on Amazon and other avenues while Best Buy and other B&M stores were still selling them at $300-$400. I remember we had several conversations about the pricing and all when I was first buying mine, it was you and Rocky that helped me make the jump to HD-DVD. LOL!

That's ok, we can cut our BluRay buddy some slack.

Wal-Mart deal doesn't start until Sunday. I went today and it wouldn't ring up.

Yep, the 360 add-on. Still a valid point of entry for HD DVD, and has been priced at and under $200 for almost a year.

due to reliability issues with the 360, i wouldnt call that a valid entry point for HDDVD
