Re: Ok im late I know, The Wire
Finally finished after about 5 years -_-
I think I will definitely go back and binge watch it all again. Didn't like how visible of a character Omar was and then a kid takes him out and no one really cares. I would have liked to see Omar get at least one of Marlow's main muscle.Comment

Re: Ok im late I know, The Wire
I know its 5 years old, but we've been using spoilers. Just a heads up from here on out I guess.
I'm nearing the end of season 2 (again). I guess its harder to "come to terms" that Stringer Bell is really an evil mother****er because my first time through I was pulled in by Idris' charisma and ease of cool, but once you step back and lay all his cards down - the dude is one of the better developed villains of any show.
I think that's my major drawback to season 2. None of the targets are any near as well developed and, as a result, interesting as Avon or Stringer. I understand the Sobotkas' motivations, but they have no where near the pull as any of the Barksdale crew from season 1.
The case itself, though, is pretty damn interesting to me.
Oh yeah. I picked up a Where's Waldo book this weekend and a thought occurred to me:

Haha, yeah man. That was supposed to read see no mention but you got the point. Looks like one episode per night Monday - Friday. I knows my Cox guide showed it listed at 8pm on HBO Signature HD.
Already cleared a bunch of junk off the DVR to make room.Comment

Re: Ok im late I know, The Wire
It's funny because right when I was reading your post, I was just on Amazon looking at ordering the entire box set, which I still might do, but now there's no rush for me to get it with HBO airing each episode.
Curious as to how they'll be able to convert it over to HD though.#RespectTheCultureComment

Re: Ok im late I know, The Wire
Have they done this with any of the older shows? I'm still waiting on the rest of The Sopranos to be released on blu-ray.
I'm starting up season 3 this week. Gonna be a quick run I feel since this season just flows so damn well.

Every season was like that once you watch the first episode, you become hooked and fly through it. Watched the series twice now and still slowly watching it back with my wife since she had never seen it.Texas A&M Aggies

Re: Ok im late I know, The Wire
Really late to the party, but upon recommendation I marathoned this show. Entire Five seasons in 3 weeks.
While it was definitely the most single captivating TV Series I have ever watched, and sometimes watched up to three episodes one after the other. Often times at the end of some of the episodes I felt unsatisfied and almost depressed. Maybe because of the cold, harsh reality that the show portrays of Real Life; and shows the first world problems of the middle class; pale in comparison to the struggles of the Impoverished citizens in High crime Urban neighborhoods.
SpoilerSome of the key moments, and plotlines I will take with me from this show:
I was amazed at how self-destructive some of the Characters played out through the series; and how even the Detectives, Police Officers; often paralleled in their destructive paths with the Street criminals they were trying to apprehend. Also I found it ironic how the major obstacles between catching these Street criminals was the Bureaucracy within their own police department, and the formalities of following the policies of the department and Legal system.
- McNaulty being the most self-destructive character he was a true homicide detective but was so so self-absorbed in his work, and his own interests that he heeded no regard to authority, policy, or how his actions would even go to effect his own co-workers, and the few people that might have cared about him outside of his job. (Family, Beadie) I almost felt embarrassed for him as just on cue in season Five he slipped back into the drunken, cheating, workaholic he was from the beginning of the show. He some what remedies this by returning the Old Homeless addict to Baltimore in the final episode.
- I personally thought Season 4 was the weakest, but also did not like how they set up Season 5 with the staged "Homeless serial killer" set up by Freamon and McNaulty; or the related Baltimore Sun, newspaper angle.. I thought Seasons 1-3 were pure gold and the best.
Although Season 4 by introducing the children and showing their POV was essential to show that life on the streets, and the war on drugs is an Eternal battle; as the circle of life just goes on. Duquan with no where else to turn went on to lead the Dope-Fiend life "Bubbles" did before him, and Michael became the new Corner robber that Omar was. Namond was the only kid to become saved from the Hood but only because of being adopted by Colvin.
- Crazy how after all the "Jesse-James" like theatrics, and jumping out of a highrise window; what ended up killing Omar was being shot in the back by a kid, that couldn't have been more than 12. I thought Omar while being a criminal, was one of the more likeable characters on the show I was actually rooting for him to find a way out and he almost did; but I knew he would fall into Marlo's trap and end up going back to Baltimore on his final crusade to try and avenge Butchies' murder. He was too self confident in his street smarts, and was destined to fall victim to the trope of "Live by the Gun; Die by the Gun."
- I was surprised that out of all the people Kima Greggs would be the one to sabotage the "Staged Homeless Serial Killer" and tattle on Freamon/McNaulty.
- Even though Marlo Stanfield was a more ruthless, cold-blooded ring leader I thought he lacked the charisma, and personality that Avon Barksdale had. I enjoyed the takedown of Barksdale more than Marlo. Marlo rose to power so quick that he had to become paranoid with all his dealings.
- Also of course Marlo ended up walking with how Politically corrupt, and dysfunctional the inner workings of the Baltimore Legal, and Criminal system were portrayed in the show. The only way to catch a guy like Marlo was to cheat the system, and Freamon and McNaulty still ended up losing as their goal of locking him up was a failure in the end, although they can take some consultation that he was forced "Out of the Baltimore game."
- Also I thought Marlo relished getting shot in the forearm in the final episode. He looked down upon his bleeding arm, after forcing a street confrontation in a Business man suit and smiled. As if he was relieved he "Still bled red, and not Green." As it was accused that Stringer Bell in an earlier season was not a true street thug because he was so focused on the Business, and financial aspect of the Drug game.
- Sidenote I thought that Marlo's right hand man, Chris Partlow was the scariest, most intimidating character on the entire show. That man just looked like he would kill you for looking at him wrong.
- Lastly the ever going theme of the unavoidable chain of command can be seen in every day life in just about every major commercial workplace. "Stats are fudged, and chain of command is obeyed so that Sergeants become Majors, and Majors can become Colonels; and Mayors can become Governors." This is just the reality of corporate infrastructure as even in my own personal experiences there is so much butt kissing of superiors, playing stat games, and pointless formalities that seem counter intuitive to the tasks that actually need to get done in workplaces. Which often times leads to the wrong person getting promoted because they didn't step on the bosses toes, and kept their mouth shut and did what they were told.
Not saying all workplaces are that dysfuncational; but the ones that are you can usually see this type of bureaucracy in effect.
