Oh that's what he meant by "I disagree with you about Lost and Alias".

Obviously every individual isn't going to find a situation or characters compelling. I was just noting that structurally, the situations were in the foundation of the plot in those two series. Whether or not people personally find it compelling is up to them, but whether or not writers put the situation in there is not debatable.

I don't know if I can pin it on JJ. I thought Lost and Alias did a great job of being immediately engaging, and making their respective protagonists sympathetic from jump. Both the situation, and the main character drew the audiences in before the pilot was over, and those themes resonated throughout the series. Fringe is much sloppier by contrast.

It's always something, though. Some will complain that the characters are not engaging, others will say that the story is too slow.

How long did we need to hear about Rombaldi in Alias? I bet if the show had an end date from the get, then it wouldn't have been for four seasons before the focus shifted elsewhere (until it came up again late in the last season).

Lost picked it up once the writers knew there were three seasons left.

I think Lindeloff is right when he says that a show like Lost or Flash Forward has to know an end date. Without the date, the show drags and viewers become disappointed.

I think Fringe thought it could avoid that problem because it intended on being episodic. However, there is no mistake that the most engaging scenarios in Fringe deal with the overarching mythology. So Fringe has to make a decision and if mythology wins then it would serve Fringe well to have an end date.

I feel you on all of that, YP, but at a basic level Fringe just has mediocre writing. You take ten minutes from Season 1 of Lost, Fringe and Alias, and I think it'd be obvious that Fringe has inferior scene work. The characters in Fringe seem to do very little besides move the plot forward in a fairly passive way. By contrast, the events in Lost are greatly affected by the kind of people that Jack and Kate are. Same for Alias, regarding it's principle characters.

Fringe feels like you can swap out primary characters and not experience much of a shift in plot or theme. That means the character isn't strong enough, which by Aristotelean principles means the plot is weak as well.

My main point of contention with your argument is that Fringe isn't consistent of JJ's writing flaws. Alias, MI:3, Lost and Star Trek, JJ shows a pretty strong grasp of his characters. Whether or not those properties work is subjective, but his handle on functional archetypes was never as meandering as it is in Fringe. I've heard it through the grapevine that he doesn't do much on Fringe, and produces mostly in name.

Yea, he's not working on Fringe at all.

Most of his writing work was done on Felicity and Alias. He did all of the planning and design of Lost along with Damon Lindeloff before the pilot.

With Fringe, I believe he pretty much co-developed the concept and then handed over the rest to the other co-creators. He has very little to do with anything Fringe.

Anyway, it’s clear that Unearthed is well and truly a stand-alone, even if we suppose events are taking place in an alternate universe where Charlie is still alive. I have no complaints this time because it’s a bonus episode and it’s probably best to treat it as such. And let’s not forget that the show has a chance to pit itself against Heroes on a Monday night. A bold move from FOX but I think Fringe can take ‘em in the ratings. If it does, I think it will stand Fringe in good stead. It certainly wouldn’t hurt!

i did not know that this was a stand alone episode until i had to google for answers since Charlie shows up in this episode...what a stupid move by the producers ruining the continuity...i like many others got confused by this episode lol

anyway...i really liked his character its too bad they killed him off...

All of Fox's marketing for it (press releases, etc) basically said that it was just an unaired episode from the first season. I don't think it was a stupid move at all. Why not test it out against Heroes (which it slaughtered)?

Yea I thought it was a great episode despite not meaning anything towards this season.

The girl, Alice Kremelberg, did a helluva job. I'm glad they aired the episode just so that her performance could be seen on Live T.V. and not just on the DVD's later. If she want it, she should get more roles.

So if anyone saw last night's episode, the writing had Fringe step into a bit of Lost mythology.

There's probably no real reason but a fascination with electro-magnetic energy and its capabilities, but sometimes you have to wonder if it is all done on purpose, right?

The inhabitants of a small town in upstate New York were able to camouflage their hideous appearances through the use of light and electro-magnetic energy. Sounds familiar, right? It's the same way the Island was kept hidden from the outside world for so long.

In some ways, I think this episode of Fringe explained what the button was doing on Lost. Similar to the machine that emitted a low hum throughout the town of Edina and subsequently powered the electro-magnetic energy that visually altered their appearance, the button in Lost was being pushed to keep that same machine running to keep the Island hidden from the outside world.

I could be wrong, but I don't think you can be more direct than that.

the thing is though i really dont follow up if its new or not...i just check the DVR after work and see if theres a new episode of Fringe (or any other show i have DVR'd for that matter)

so this is a test if it can hold up against heroes? hmm Heroes was good in the first season..ive lost interest on that show...
