Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
dang it, im in the market for 2 tvs.. i want a 46 lcd for our wall mount in the living room (bc of lighting) and i would go for a 42/43 plasma for my rec room (where the lighting isnt an issue).. i would love a 46 in their as well, but trying to save a bit, bah lol..
anyway..
looks like i missed the boat on this deal on the Sharp in in link below..
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...1000P?prdNo=12
only $799.. i have 2 sharp 32's now and they have been GREAT..
i like some of the pannys and sammy plasmas, 42/43, but the lack of inputs on some really stinks.
thing is, with the living room tv, i dont really need 1080p IMO, we dont care about 3D etc either. just as long as the DTV and xbox 360 look great.. (my 2nd 360 will be on this tv bc of the kinnect).
now, one question i have about these pannys and sammys, i seen it says output 720p.. but the inputs support 1080p etc.. what does that mean? can someone please explain that? (not to answer my own question, but does that mean, if i have my 360 on 1080p, the tv's can just process that signal, but will do so in just 720p, correct?)
with that said above, will we ever see 1080p broadcasted mainstream? bc of the cost and bandwidth issues etc?
thanks.Last edited by Fiddy; 04-24-2011, 09:27 AM.Twitch

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
Yes sir. I left mine running the first 4-5 days of getting mine. I have zero burn in on my Sammy set. When changing channels you see the image fore about 5 secodns or less and then it clears. I was uber scared when I went to plasma but am glad I stuck with it and moved past the fear.Joshua:

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
You get the same thing by making sure what you're watching takes up the entire screen and doesn't have any static images (logo or bar that stays in one spot)
Just make sure you lower the contrast to something in the 50s and make sure the plasma is not in vivid or torch mode. IR is temporary and pretty common in new plasmas. Should go away in seconds.
A tv that is 720p will accept a 1080p signal as well. It will simply down convert it to 720p.Last edited by GAMEC0CK2002; 04-24-2011, 11:31 AM.Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
ok, after talking with a buddy, he thinks our big window wont be much of an issue bc of us using it at night for the most part and that even in the day it shouldnt be a big deal..
so, after that, i was thinking about getting 2 of these, one to mount on our wall in living room and one will just sit secured on a stand in the rec room..
Panasonic 50" Class Viera® X3 Series Plasma HDTV ($719)
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...41000P?prdNo=1
thoughts on that?
i was also debating these 2 Samsung LCDs for living room bc of the light..
Samsung 46'' Class 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV ($899)
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...92000P?prdNo=2
Samsung 46" Class 1080p 60Hz LCD HDTV ($809)
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...91000P?prdNo=4
only diff seems to be the hz between the Samsungs, and like i mentioned before, im fine with this TV in living room not being the best so to speak.
So, what would you guys do? Sammy LCD or Panny Plasma in the living room.. (picture below).. the TV will go on the wall, where the window is to the left, about say 10 feet more to the left of that window.Attached FilesTwitch

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
from what i have been reading on avforums, most those guys dont mind not having 1080p on their plasmas.. just bc they doubt it will ever mainstream bc of the cost etc.
what do you OS'ers think about that? even though, it shouldn't bother me by not having it on that 50 inch Panny, i know it will at the very least bug me lol..Twitch

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
plus, i honestly dont think i would be able to tell that much of a difference between the 2. heck, all sports games are made for 720p, so even though my 32in sharp lcd is 1080p, the game is in 720p..
but i know like i mentioned above, it will bother me, when it probably shouldnt.
what would you recommend for me 55? say in a 46-50 inch, plasma or lcd? (another reason i think the plasma will be good is bc of the glass screen. less chance of my 2 year old breaking it.)Twitch

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
i would say we will be sitting say 8-10 feet away.. maybe a tad further back, depending how we layout the furniture.
i have 2 32 inch 1080ps, i sit about 6 to 8 feet from them now, i didnt notice anything when we did have the ps3 blu ray player on them compared to 720p. but was that just bc the tv is small?
it also seems that you either have the eye for spotting the difference or ya dont, is that true? lol.. bc i dont think i have an eye for it. i swear you could have them side by side, 720p and 1080p, play same movie on same size screen say 50, and i dont think i could tell the difference lol..Twitch

Are you going for a plasma or lcd? The reason why I ask is that if you go with one of these cheaper 720p sets, there isn't a good anti glare screen on there. I know this is your man cave and probably can control the lighting to a degree if you put curtains and or blinds over those windows. Look at any 720p plasma set, they are like looking at a mirror.......the glare sucks big time. Personally, if you have the money to buy 2 50" 720p sets......why not get a decent 1080p 50-51" plasma with that money and use the rest to get a smaller set? It's your money man, but buying a set that you might not be happy with down the road is not a good thing since upgrading later might be a problem. I see you have a 360 which has many games at 1080p, would take advantage of a 1080p set.
I saw the Panny ST30 for $1169 at BBY last week which is a good price for that plasma and has received good reviews from owners on AVS. Not sure how the Sammy counterparts to the 2011 Panny's hold up in the same price range.Last edited by CaptainZombie; 04-25-2011, 03:38 PM.Comment
