Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

There is no need to break in plasmas any longer.

As for the poster that bought the 64D7000 congrats, you just bought yourself a great great great plasma. You will be blown away at how incredible the colors are compared to the Panny.

As for the poster that bought the GT30....Sorry to say but that tv has major issues which I will explain. I bought it on Friday from Best Buy and came with 2 glasses and Avatar 3d. Great gift

But the floating brightness on that tv is horrible and the best mode on that tv is the THX mode but the gama on that setting is ruined and makes the colors washed out.

Dont even try to use standard more because it has the worst floating brightness of all settings and Panny even admitted to it and will see if they can fix. Doubt it

Some of the better calibrators have stated that the ST version which is the step down from the GT are better in terms of gama but the floating brightness is still there. It was so bad that it hurt my eyes at times.

Sure you will love the blu ray on it and you should since it looks incredible as well as 3D but gaming was horrible in custom or game mode due to the floating brightness.

If I were you I would return it and get the lower end ST but get the bigger size and would be about the same price.

Or get the Sammy which has it all and is rated the best plasma this year by Cnet.

Not sure I agree with that statement.

Using vivid or torch mode straight out the box (especially on channels that have static images and/or tool bars) for long periods of time is asking for trouble.

Can someone please give me a step by step explanation of where to get the break-in slides and then how to run them on my television? Any help would be appreciated.

Torch mode is not going to burn your plasma unless you leave a static image for days. Image retention will and does happen but clears in time. Running torch mode will actually help burn in the colors to help lessens image retention. But to do this you need to not keep a static image.

No need to do that. I have that same tv for a month and no issues at all and never broke it in. This is not your fathers plasmas

If you must then use the xbox music images to help break in

You got a very nice set as I have last years model the G20 and I love it. There have been a few issues reported with this set as Giants is saying, but not everyone is experiencing them. Some of these issues you really have to go looking for them.

Here is the thing, some people may not even notice the floating brightness. I've read a lot about this on the GT30/31 and there are people that do not notice it.

I have the G20 and I do not notice the floating blacks. There are many issues with the G20, but I just do not go looking for them at all. Another issue is the rising blacks. I must have a good 1,400 hours in by now on this set and I don't think the blacks have risen much.

As long as plasma's are continued to be made, I will be their customer. I really like the natural look of the image and with the price being on the lower end vs. paying more for LCD tech.......I'll take this any day.

You do not have to look for the issued when the brightness changes on change of image and the Gama is ruined on this set. This is not isolated and hurts the color and shadow detail.

I've read some people didn't have the issue or notice it. How bad is the brightness issue? Some guys are saying maybe a FW upgrade might fix that. Personally, I would go with the ST30 or D7000 if I was in the market for another set. The D7000 is getting some rave reviews.

It was bad. On my set when playing NBA 2K11 and after any cutscene or change in transition the brightness popped and died down right away. It was annoying to see.

This is not the floating blacks. It is the floating whites which kills the enjoyment from a set that is not that cheap

And the fact that Gama is crap means that you cant ever get inky blacks without losing shadow detail.

                    I say buy a sammy

Be sure to make sure you turn the contrast down to 50-55. The TVs in the store have the contrast at close to 100 to be bright on the showroom floor. Doesn't matter what picture setting you are using, keep it under 60. Most plasma owners run slides that speed you through the "break in" period of the first 100-150 hrs. Afterwards, you can bump the contrast up to whatever you like.

Also, make sure you're using the entire screen. Try to stay away from the vertical or horizontal bars. Just switch the ratio or use zoom.

Enjoy the new set. I have both a Panny and LG plasma.
Thanks for the tips. I read somewhere, maybe on this thread that the XBOX music visualization is good to use. Its the screen with continuous colors and designs. I put it on that for a few hours last night.

So image retention will not be any problem at all after I "break in" the set? I plan on playing games like NHL and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for hours on end when they come out. It will not be uncommon for me to have Elder Scrolls on for 7-8 straight hours. Will this be a problem?

I may not want to know but I guess I'll ask, what exactly are the problems? I already have the TV but luckily I have the protection plan. I do not plan on taking this TV (GT31) back because I've already returned an LED/LCD for it. I have looked the new plasma over and over and over and have not noticed any flaws. If they are there, hopefully they're too small to notice. I absolutely love it.

Is cool if you do not notice them therefore enjoy your tv and let me not make you look for defects.

Unfortunately for me I became a video and audiophile and these things bug me to no end.

But the tv is ranked in the top 5 for this year on Cnet so it is a good purchase.

Enjoy it and did you get the Avatar 3d and 2 glasses? That should be part of the deal if you bought it from a panny distributor

Edit: Never mind, I saw that you did get it. Incredible right?

LOL Don't go looking for issues if you don't see them.

The Panny plasma (3 years old) I have now stays in vivid mode with 95 contrast. Didn't move it to this til a few months went by. No image retention to speak of.

You're right but I just want to make sure there's no glaring issues that I will notice later when its out of the original 30 days from purchase. I have been running a break-in video for the past couple days. It shows gradients of colors every 30 second. I don't know if it completely necessary to do this but it makes me feel better about leaving static images on the screen.

Well, I couldn't help but research what exactly the problem(s) that Giants was talking about. The good news is, I do not notice them, at all. If they are there I sure am not seeing it. So I am sold on this TV. I'm not saying that Giants is making anything up, I'm sure some TV's suffer from issues of floating blacks/contrast but I just don't see it. It might be there, but I can't tell and that's good enough for me.
