Re: LCD or OLED? - The TV Thread

So has anyone been able to get pass the "soap opera effect"? Because I swear the last time I bought a TV (my Plasma) many people acted like they were "gaslighting" me acting like they couldn't see it or, even worst, they thought that abomination was acceptable.

I remember buying and bringing home a 40 inch Samsung Smart TV because the one that was desperately wanted (Panasonic 40 inch) has just gone out of production and all they had left was a 50 inch which was just too enormous for my room.

5 minutes in a knew I wouldn't and couldn't keep it, I told myself: "if you keep this, you may never get that burned image from video games but you are never watching a movie again". Turns out that 50 incher wasn't that much of a problem after all. Never know what a little encouragement can do.

You mean pretend like it doesn't exist? Hell no. Thankfully, that can always be turned off... unless you watch a soap opera, or PJ's Hobbit trilogy, or Michael Mann's Public Enemies.

My point is if you can go without it, it's always the better option. Even for video games, if you are using it to achieve the perception of a higher framerate and it comes at the cost of input lag or hitting that framerate consistently, it's just better to do without it IMO. A few of us covered this lots, lots, and lots more in these two threads in The Show sub-forum:

Can you have silky smooth gameplay on 4k and HDR setting..YES
MLB '19 Framerate drops/sutters help and discussion thread

I honestly couldn't follow what the rest of your post meant, though. I read it like five times.

I mean if any of the current Televisions currently available are capable of combining the rich deep blacks of the old Plasma while at the same time not having the dreaded "soap opera effect".

The solution to the soap opera effect is just turning off the motion interpolation settings in the TV.

Anyone have one of those fireplace stands?

Deciding between that or just a regular stand for under $200.

Don't know if the fireplace one is worth it, mainly if those fireplaces end up going, it just becomes a regular expensive tv stand. Sounds unsafe having a TV directly on a fireplace, but clearly if they sell them it must be fine?

I saw it I think around $350 CDN. So under $300 USD.

The 1 downside of it is that it has no temperature control, so its just on and off.

I've looked at others and those seem to have temp control and a remote. All for around same price.

TCL going to be major player next year. That miniLED tech look very good. I mean yeah Sony already had a TV like it, but TCL packing more of them in then Sony has.

With the future release of firmware updates and a new GeForce Game Ready Driver, LG’s E9 and C9 2019 TVs will be the first in the industry to deliver G-SYNC Compatible big-screen gaming experiences via HDMI.
