Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

My buddy who has been the biggest anti-PCMasterRace person alive is thinking about building his own PC.

I haven't kept up with the building scene lately, but I put this together for him - http://pcpartpicker.com/p/mJNY7P

He had a range of $700-$750. I'd like to work down and see where I might be having him overspend. I'm gonna make him do his own research too, but this will get him started.

Does he already have a HDD he transferring over ? Because that 250GB SSD will fill up fast. I would also tell him to spend $10 more and get the 280 instead of the 270 or $20 more and get the 280X.

Yeah, I'd lose the optical drive and put that $ towards the 280-280x.

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

After installing my new video card I keep getting the dreaded display driver message.

Anyone know how to fix this? Only happens when i try to play games. It'll play for a minute then freeze, or just crash and the message comes up afterwards

I did DL the latest driver. Alot went on at once though... MS updates, 2k patch, new video card.... but still, didnt have this issue before

          I have Windows 8.1

Sounds like a corrupt driver or it could be the card is malfunctioning.

i deleted and re-installed the drivers a couple of times. You think the card is messed up?

I've seen the issue by doing a google search with others with all kinds of cards and MS has a FAQ page on it from Vista all the way to Windows 8

              Everything else works just fine

I'd RMA the card. If you did a clean removal of the driver and reinstalled multiple times, I'd be incline to guess bad card.

Now you do have your onboard graphics disabled if you have one right?

Disable the onboard VGA in the bios, you aren't using it and if it's disabled it won't crash.

Is your CPU overclocked and if so, set all your hardware to default. Do you have an integrated GPU on your CPU and if so, is it disabled (go to Device Manager>Click the arrow on Display Adapters and make sure your card is listed)? Is it possible that the card is too much for your power supply? Try using different connectors (DVI/Displayport/HDMI).

What card did you get by the way?

What is your motherboard? AM3+ boards have on board GPU a lot of the time. In bios you should see a onboard video option to disable. Some boards do it automatically but some don't. So make sure only your main card is running so no conflict is happening.

yes........onboard means integrated with the proc/motherboard. If you didn't your PC is trying to run two video cards at once and its causing a conflict.
