Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

I did a build not too long ago and love my new PC. Spent about 1000-ish on it. Hate to admit it, but I didn't think I could handle building the whole by myself, so I had a buddy do most of the building for me.

My processor is an AMD FX-8350, and I'm just using a stock cooler. The thing is about as loud as a freight train coming through when I'm rendering. I would like to get an aftermarket fan and have pretty much decided on my choice.

My question is, how hard would it be to switch it out? Never really was a lego kind of guy, as taking apart and putting things together was never something I was good at.

It's not hard at all. Few screws unhook a latch pull it out.

Good to hear. Just a bit afraid that I'll screw something up.

I did it as a complete noob and nothing went wrong. You might have to open both sides of your case up though but its really just a matter of screws.

Yeah, a lot of coolers might need a bracket on the underside of the motherboard.

Mine came with thermal paste on it already. I didn't apply any extra.

Definitely remove everything that is there.

Here is a good guide. There are multiple ways to re-apply it.

With XCOM being PC exclusive and Fallout not being on last gen consoles I'll definitely be upgrading this fall and making myself a new PC. Hopefully Skylake is out by then and the graphics card market is down price wise.

Do you guys do the thin line method or 1 to 2 pea sized drops in the middle?

Also after I apply it is there anything special I should do after I turn it back on.

I used the plastic bag method. Put a squirt on and then your use finger inside of a plastic bag to spread it around.

ASUS recommends putting a pea size blob in the middle and using the pressure of the heatsink to spread it around. This is a popular method too.

If the contact area of the heat sink covers the entire CPU I think it would be smart to cover the entire CPU. Some heat sinks (yours probably) only have a circle has a contact point so this method would work. I'm definitely not an expert though.

Nothing special you have to do when turning back on. Just make sure your fan is plugged back in.

I applied the thermal paste and my CPU is still running hot....

Not sure what the problem is.

                                What kind of temps?

                                Is the fan tight enough?

Does your case have sufficient airflow?
