Are you using an x86 version of software by chance, where it can only use 3gb of ram?

Nope, win 7 64 pro. I've seen my ram usage in the 5 gig range but the issues is the page file is almost doubled my ram when in game.
The other night in arma i was using 5 gig ram but 8gigs for the page file. Tonight i lower page file to 2Gb and it was still running at 6gb while only 3gb used by my ram. So i then disable the page file, naturally restarted and tried again, those are the pics. A page file is still being created and growing in size.

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
Ok so this might be good information for someone else.
I've discovered in MSI Afterburner the "page file" reading at the bottom is NOT the pagefile size!!! It is really the "Commit Charge", aka total Ram and virtual memory usage.
So a combination of windows pagefile + ram usage = AB "Pagefile" reading. Hope that makes sense, it has cleared up my frustration.Comment

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
i want to build a gaming pc for about $700 that can play everything at great settings.
i dont really know enough about computers though to pick the parts myself though.
does anyone have some suggestions on what a good build is for that price.
here's a build i found online, it seems good to me, but my friend said its not the most preferable. could someone explain what could be improved.

without the monitor and software it is about $750 which is close to my budget. although still a bit off, plus i was planning to include the moniter and software in the budget but i want a hardcore gaming pc that can last a while.Last edited by killerx2; 07-11-2015, 12:43 AM.i tried not touching anything when i was younger and ended up pissing all over myself.Comment

Your video card pick is best pick for value to performance.
The cpu is a little slower but good value
Ram good
Power supply strong enough
Solid state, drop it and add a 1 TB regular hard drive. That little 120 gig ssd wont do you any good
I didnt check on the monitor, just focused on the pc internals.
If you could get a copy of windows free and drop win 8, use that money towards a good sound card with a amp, sound blaster Z is extremely good.

a sound card is not needed for a budget build however, if you are going to spend the money anywhere else you should do it on something where you will notice the performance, either upgrading the CPU or GPU, also if you are just planning to keep the OS on the ssd just so the PC boots quickly there is no reason to drop it.Comment

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
from what i understand, the ssd is good for anything that needs a lot of loading.
i was thinking it would be good for some games.
also what would be the benefit of another 1 TB hard drive? i doubt i will even need 1 tb.
i dont really understand all the computer stuff that much.i tried not touching anything when i was younger and ended up pissing all over myself.Comment

yeah with a 120 gig ssd you would be able to put windows on there so your pc loads in a matter of seconds and maybe 1 or 2 games, depending on size of game.
the benefit of having a 1tb drive is the cost is cheap and more storage for more games. or media if you are saving photos or music or whatever.
so in theory if you know you will only want to keep a few games loaded at a time you can always ditch the 1tb drive and just pony up for a bigger ssd and load more games directly onto that... and this in essence is the beauty of pc gaming... so many optionsComment

btw, is it a good idea to have left over space? my friend says the computer performs better but i haven't been able to find an answer anywhere else.
im buying an apartment so i am waiting until all the paper work is done and i move in to build the pc, so in the mean time i'm trying to do all the research i can.i tried not touching anything when i was younger and ended up pissing all over myself.Comment

- Sound Card not needed for a budget build, yes I agree the onboard will be "good enough". Yet there is no denying a Sound Blaster Z, equivalent, or higher will make the gaming experience more immersive, more intense, and just more enjoyable if the cost can be cut else where. Which was why I said if the windows OS could be acquired elsewhere the sound card would be a great addition for a machine which you will be doing a lot of gaming, key word gaming.
- Keeping the SSD, Well this comes down to matter of preference and how the system will be used. A 120 gig SSD would do nothing for my setup and gaming needs. I would spend more time removing and adding games than enjoying the speed advantage of the SSD, which in gaming is minimal and primarily helps on loading which a couple extra seconds does not warrant the inclusion for my rig. Now up that to a bigger say 500 gig SSD and then I could see some advantage but for me, I have over 100+ games with roughly 70 installed on my PC, using almost 2 tb of used space. If he will be taking advantage of steam sales and buying games the extra space will be crucial. Now like I said earlier, it will comes down to personal preference and how you plan on using your PC.

is it simple to move windows from the ssd to the hard drive. if thats the case, then i will definitely just stick with the 120 gb ssd, but if i have to backup my files or its not possible, then i might consider upgrading the ssd.

im buying an apartment so i am waiting until all the paper work is done and i move in to build the pc, so in the mean time i'm trying to do all the research i can.
For instance on my PC I have a lot of data from music to games installed so I don't want to spend two days reinstalling everything to my PC in case of a hard drive failure or something catastrophic happens. So the first of every month, my PC makes a image of the hard drive so in the unfortunate event of a failure, its one simple install and I'm back to where I was on the first of the month. I then also run a backup once a week, so across the board this keeps all my data pretty safe.
Your friend is right to a degree. Windows OS naturally becomes slower with age, they have improved this over the years but for the most part a newly installed OS will operate quicker than a five year old install. Adding more data to a hard drive naturally makes the CPU work slightly longer as it has to spend more time digging through more files to find what its looking for but this is not something you will notice as a average PC gamer. Build your PC, load the OS, go to town loading games, and prepare for a awesome experience in gaming.Last edited by Phobia; 07-13-2015, 11:24 AM.Comment

1 TB is a lot of space. For only $38.50 of your budget it's worth having that amount of space even it never gets used. It will be worth it down the line when you want to install more games, but don't necessarily want to install your older games. You will be buying most of your games through Steam more than likely. The benefit of steam is you can buy them while on sale (Steam Summer Sale) and they stay attached to your account. You can install them at a later time.Comment

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
thanks guys.
i dont know if im going to buy a bunch of games so i guess i can just take the ssd out and get it later if i need it.
that would help.
i wont be able to build it for a while because i wont have any money freeing up for a couple weeks or so but im going to try to catch the amazon deals if i can because that would help a lot.i tried not touching anything when i was younger and ended up pissing all over myself.Comment
