Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
BTW, Decided instead of buying a new UPS I'm going to try to change out the batteries on an old $150 Cyberpower I had that quit working. $32 is on the line, if it doesn't work and I still have to spend another $100-150 I'm going to have to tell the wife "told you so.."
But I have seen on videos online that what my Cyberpower does (coming on flashing and not really responding) has been fixed by putting in new batteries and it was several years old so I am hopeful, and somewhat confident, that inserting new batteries will help fix it.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
So I wanted to check with you guys before I get home from work and start trying to diagnose this issue.
I got the 1070 Ti a week ago or so, removed all old AMD files using their wipe tool. I then installed Nvidia's software and drivers for the 1070 Ti plus EVGA's software.
Since that point all my games have played perfect with good frame rates. Well last night was a different story. I played an 1-1/2 hours of PUBG and another 45 min to 1 hour of Islands of Nyne.
During this time, I was on Discord with people chatting while we were playing. As PUBG would load to the menu, everyone's voice in discord would become robotic and my PC seemed to hang/chug along. Once I got in game, every 3 to 5 min I'd get a FPS drop of 120s to the mid 40s and the gameplay would stutter bad. During these stutters, everyone in Discord would state my voice became so robotic it was unable to recognize what I was saying. So when it would clear up (15 sec or so) and they were able to hear me again, I'd state to them "I can feel it happening in my mouse with the sluggishness and it's affecting Discord".
I could feel it in the mouse that something was going on, so I restarted PC hoping to fix the issue. Well after restarting, it was just as bad. I attempted to power through the frustration and when everyone got off PUBG, I wanted to test to make sure it wasn't just PUBG. So I jumped in Islands of Nyne which has always been smooth for me.
Same thing started, 120s to 130s frames, silky smooth, BAM sudden drop to 70s fps and the screen develops a micro-stutter/skip for couple seconds. Rinse and repeat every few min. The weird thing is, the frame rates rarely dipped below 60 fps but you could physically see the skipping on screen as if I was at say 20 fps. It surely didn't look like 70 fps.
I turned on Hardware Monitor and observed for a round and nothing seemed out the ordinary, temps were good on CPU, Memory, and GPU, PS rails were rock steady with no dips, GPU didn't show any signs of throttling(no clock dips), etc
So today I've been trying to think of how to nail down where the issue lies. How you guys think I should go about figuring this out? I'd like to find out ASAP if it is the GPU so I could RMA it if I need, but I also don't want to go through all that if it's something else. It concerns me, I've never had this issue before the GPU change and a week later this randomly pops up and it's a big distraction during a game. Something is causing the PC to slow down and I'm stumped where to find the answer to what that is!Last edited by Phobia; 07-25-2018, 12:08 PM.Comment

I'd start by clearing out any programs at start up in Windows... Remove everything you possibly can from the start up and then try it
I once had a similar issue that was being caused by Amazon music running in the background

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
Easiest solution that might be the most PITA method:
Fresh install.
You’ll quickly tell if it’s a hardware issue.
There are slower routes but honestly, if you can, I’d save what you can on a portable HDD and do a complete fresh install.
It could be driver conflicts (maybe?) since you had AMD prior. Something might not be playing nice. Another reason a fresh install is great IF it’s an option you would consider.Comment

That was my first thought also (AMD prior install causing some issues) and for me I dread nothing more than a clean install. It's such a PITA setting everything back to how I have it now, windows 10 settings, audio settings, recording settings, on and on. I'll naturally go that route if I truly can't figure out a solution but I'm really hoping I can run hardware Monitor, Gpu Monitor, hell even Resource Monitor to find what is exactly causing the hang.
Now here is the thing that gets me, this never occurred until the new steam chat/look dropped yesterday. So I'm wondering if it's a steam issue hogging resources or something?Comment

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
Yea ODogg, that's something I'm pretty good about. I only have Discord, Steam, EVGA Precision XOC, and Webroot starting. Now, I am going to disable Precision XOC because that I did recently install Friday or Saturday. So it could be it.

I read an article when I first got my new build that had a great explanation of why you should always do a fresh install on a big hardware change. Can’t find it now or course lol.
Good luck either way, I HATE fresh installs so much lol.Comment

If you have sufficient memory which I’m 100% sure you do, that’s not going to be the case, if so, you’d have a bigger issue with memory leaks I would think. Or CPU error.

You know this also just popped in my head. When I first turned on the PC and Steam popped up with the update, once it finished I restarted PC and steam. Well I then had a update for Dead by Daylight (I think it was) and it took FOREVER to install. It downloaded fast as always, but when it got to installing, it took something like 12 min for a little 500MB update.
I'm now starting to wonder if maybe an issue with my SSD is going on and some type of read/write issue was going on. Going to install Samsung Magician when I get home and see what I get.Last edited by Phobia; 07-25-2018, 05:42 PM.Comment

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
PITA for sure, but with new hardware and trying to diagnose ASAP, a fresh Windows install may be the way to go. Probably what I'd do to set my mind at ease as quickly as I could.
While you're at it (personal opinion here) drop that buggy mess that is EVGA Precision and go with MSI Afterburner and RTSS. When I got my EVGA, I uninstalled MSI for Precision, lasted a couple days then I quickly went back. It's way more stable and allows you to OC and customize fan profiles the same. May lose some RGB lighting features though.

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
Going from an MSI GPU to an EVGA for some reason I thought I had to use the Precision XOC software. It was a nice change of pace, very briefly, but it's lack of stability became clear quickly. It wouldn't work in many games or just randomly; settings weren't saving, etc.
Once I realized I could still use Afterburner, I've gone back and don't plan on changing.

Afterburner is the way to go. I have a EVGA 1080ti and did the same as u guys. Installed Precision. Used for two days and went back to Afterburner. If it ain't broke don't fix it lol.

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
I think you guys might of been right! I came home, threw on standard ol resource monitor, and started PUBG. It wasn't 5 min in before I got the first drop and what I noticed. The 1070 Ti GPU usage would drop from 90ish% to 40% for a split second, then pop back up to 90%. Right at that moment is when the frame rates would drop from 120s to as low as 40 fps then follow suit and pop right back up.
Next, I ran Samsung Magician and the drive came back good.
I then uninstalled EVGA Precision, started PUBG after the restart and everything feels back to normal. I've played and monitored it from AB for around 2 hours now and it feels good. I'm still hesitant that was the only issue, but fingers crossed that's all it was.
It was buggy for me since the start. It wouldn't save the scan settings and when trying to set a OC to a profile it would go back to default settings. So maybe it was just a poor install.Last edited by Phobia; 07-26-2018, 12:09 AM.Comment

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
The only issue I hate with EVGA Precision is sometimes it seems to always want to start that LED SYNC app on startup in Windows 10. I had to uninstall and then reinstall.
I have to have the Precision software to control my cards lighting don't I?
If not I will remove it but then how will I change my EVGA card lighting? I like it to match what my case lights are showing.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

As far as I know, Precision XOC is the only way to control your lighting.
I'd read somewhere that you can have both Precision and Afterburner installed, but I don't know the procedure to keep them from conflicting with one another when it comes to OC and/or fan control.
