My wife gets veto power of what case I get, if I go large and noticeable.

I took a trade on a gaming PC quite a few years ago from craigslist, and she hated it. It was full of bright blue LED's, and looks like a car grill

So from that point on, I've had to be selective on my builds, as to not look like there's a compact car parked in our room, lol.

Looks as if I may not get my RTX for the time being. Home flooded, and we're out around $15-20k in damage. Right now I"m trying to justify it, and really can't. So benchmarks will probably have to wait, ha.

Kenny: Ok Vic, I'm ready for some girl on girl action.
Vic: No Kenny, that's girl versus girl.
            Kenny: What's the difference?
Vic: Well, in one, one girl wins. In the other....
            Kenny: Everyone wins?!?!

Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

Hey guys, I could use a little advice on my current hard drive setup.

When I upgraded my rig earlier this year I bought my first SSD - Samsung EVO 860 500gb. So far so good, no complaints other than I fill it up too quickly. I still have my 1TB HDD, but its performance is clearly degrading and I only use it to store random stuff, I am not (and really cannot) run any programs off of it any more.

I have been on the lookout for good prices on smaller SSD's with the intention of moving my OS to a dedicated boot drive and using the 860 strictly for gaming. My plan was to install Windows 10, Steam, Origin and a couple other programs on the boot drive and basically leave it alone. From there, everything else would go on the 860.

I ordered a 120gb SSD because the price was good at $35 bucks (went WAY over my budget already this year on upgrades) and in my haste, I really didn't research enough about the drive. It's not the fastest.

                  https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-120GB...ct_top?ie=UTF8

There is a clear difference in these two SSD's as the 860 is obviously the better drive. From what I can gather though, the READ speed doesn't seem too terrible on the Sandisk.

My dilemma - would I be making a mistake by putting Windows on the slower driver? Is it counter-intuitive to run the setup the way I was thinking? My goal is to utilize the 860 as much as possible for gaming, but I don't want to hurt overall performance in the process.

Any help is appreciated, as always.

Keep everything the way you have it and just add more ssds for games

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

Having some issues with my build.

I turned my PC off for the night and went to bed last night. Got home from class and went to turn it on and it just keeps powering on for 2 seconds, turning off for 2 or 3 seconds, and repeating this on it's own until I turn the PSU off.

The liquid cooler's led turns on during this, the GPU lights up and the fans start to spin at first, but quickly slow and stop. The case fans do not spin at all. That's what tipped me off at first was I didn't hear the fans when I hit the power button and I always hear them initially going.

When I tried the paperclip trick the case fans roared on like normal. When I've removed the GPU and tried to remove one stick of ram the same thing happens. I removed the CPU and it passed the visual check.

My issue is I have a Gigabyte z170x G3. It has no light or beeps so I can't tell if it is the issue or not. I have an old PSU from a previous build, but I do not know if it actually works because I built this PC back when the old build died and I never checked to see if it was the PSU or CPU back then because I had planned on building a PC when it died so I didn't try to ever troubleshoot it.

I'm unsure of what to do next other than potentially trying a healthy PSU in it and then if the problem persists declaring the mobo dead.

                      Any ideas?

Tested PSU from old build. It's completely dead.

Different PSU and Mobo tested. Same exact issues. Is my CPU dead already?

Sound like your CPU is dead. You might have had a power surge while you slept or while you were at school that damaged the CPU only since the CPU is the most fragile thing on the board.

That's what I was afraid of. Going to head to BestBuy and grab whatever LGA1151 CPU they have and see if that is the problem. At least they have a nice return policy.

I can almost guarantee it's the CPU. What you are describing is exactly what happened to me a few years ago and that was the culprit.
