Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

So, plugged a new 8600k into the PC and it booted up perfectly. I logged in and was on my desktop. Then the screen went black. Then the fans went loud for a few seconds and died down. I turned the computer off and back on, still black screen. Turned it off and back on while looking inside the case and now my GPU is not lighting up and the led code on the new motherboard is lighting up the GPU issue light.

It doesn't smell nor look like it got burnt up. It just isn't getting power now it seems. Did my GPU just die too???

Hopefully a power surge didn’t burn up your whole system. Do you have your pc connected to a UPS with an AVR?

It's just plugged into your basic surge protector.

Yeah, invest in a UPS battery back up when it comes to a PC. Their surge protection is way better then your basic surge protector. Hell every flat screen and console in my house is connected to one.

Moving on.....something is short circuited. It is either your power supply or the motherboard. Expensive to replace both, but I would do the power supply first since that can be done for under $100.

This was with a new PSU and mobo I got to try out first. When nothing changed I got the CPU and that's what fixed it until the GPU went out.

Just put in my old 970 and it's working fine. The 1070ti must have gotten eaten up as well.

Guess I learned my lesson here. At least I have the 970 as a backup. Going to just keep the mobo and psu I bought today because I was looking into getting another build together soon for various reasons.

I enjoyed the 1070ti for the few months I had it. Great card. It will be missed haha.

Well, I gave my brother the 1070ti to try in his PC and all is well. Strange.

I guess sometime this week I will get it back and try it in my PC again. Don't know what I could have exactly been missing. The 970 is working at least, but if the 1070ti is still kicking then I definitely want that baby back in.

Able to try the 1070ti tonight. She's in there and I am here posting so she's still got some life in her. I really don't understand what was happening yesterday to where it was not getting power, but it's working now.

So now the only difference in my PC is I went from a 6700k to an 8600k. I don't think I'll suffer too much with the games I play, but it still sucks to see that 6700k gone after only 2 years.

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

Let me see if I'm on page here.

                      1) Your PC was power looping.

                      2) You installed new power supply and Mobo.

                      3) Still had the same issue of a power loop.

                      4) Threw in a new proc.

                      5) System worked for a little while then started showing signs again.

                      6) Threw in your old 970.

                      7) Everything has been working fine.

                      8) Threw back in 1070 Ti and everything still working fine.

                      Does all that sound right?

                      Here is why I'm stumped.

If it was a power supply or motherboard issue you wouldn't of had issues after changing both of those and never would of put in a new proc. Where if it was really a dead proc and after you threw in the 8700 everything should be wonderful. You now have a new PSU, new MOBO, and new PROC but still had a power shutdown where your GPU wouldn't power on.

All these things would lead me to investigate your home's power condition. I'd look into something which can monitor if your home is being subjected to brown outs, that is what I'm personally thinking your experiencing.

I had a similar issue several years ago, I started noticing my breakers were flipping for no reason. A couple weeks later, I noticed my lights in my dining room were dimmer than normal. So I called my electrical service company. Over the phone they told me everything looked fine around my area but would send a tech to check it out. When he came out, he found my main service line which is normally 3/4" or so in diameter was worn away in one spot down to only 2 strands (roughly 1/4" diameter). So the power attempting to come into my home was catching a big bottle neck. They replaced the entire line and everything has been fantastic since.

**Main service line runs next to a magnolia tree so the constant vibration and movement from wind slowly over the decades wore the wire down**

That's some second-level diagnosis right there. Well done.

Hopefully you get it figured out, Canes. It definitely seems like something deeper than your hardware considering how you've explained everything working in different scenarios.

                          Sort of Phobia.

                          Basically

                          PC was power looping.

Tested everything one at a time to narrow it down. Got down to where the it was Mobo vs CPU.

Got new mobo and PSU. PSU was because I needed an extra for my other build I wanted and because passing the paperclip test doesn't guarantee it's not the issue.

New mobo and PSU in, same issue.

Switch out processors. It works with new mobo and PSU.

                          Try old PSU, it works.

Put 1070ti back in and try to boot it up and use it like normal. All was fine for a few minutes then the screen went black. Still had audio.

PC kept powering on, no looping, just had no visuals from GPU on any of 3 monitors, lights on GPU were not lighting up as normal.

Try 970 and all works as expected.

Brother tries 1070ti in his PC. Works fine.

Reinstall 1070ti into my PC. Lights light up, boots normal, have visual. Install drivers, working flawlessly since.

I'm still leaning toward a brown out issue. You don't suddenly lose power to the GPU one moment and it works fine the next. A weird boot loop yea that's one of those random PC things which can happen and resolve itself, but no power to the GPU, that is very odd!

I'd also consider maybe a output issue from the GPU to monitor which could cause a black screen while the PC is still working fine behind the no image. I've had issues for years now with my Samsung IPS monitor, if I turn it off AFTER my 144hz one, the next time I'll power on the PC I'll get "no display detected" from my 144hz and the Samsung will default to the main monitor. The only way to then get the PC to detect the 144hz monitor is to unplug the power cable from the monitor, wait a min or so for the power to dump, then reconnect it. When I fire up the PC it will be back to normal with both monitors starting correctly.

It's funky but I've learned to turn the Sammy off first, then the 144hz, after that booting is normal until I mess up lol.

Now I doubt this could be the issue because it shouldn't cause a power loop. I'd rule out brown outs if I was you, they can destroy a PC very quickly.

Newegg got hacked, if you bought anything between August 14 and September 14 I think and didn't use PayPal or Apple pay or some kind of external source and gave Newegg your card info, watch your accounts.

In even more ****ed up news, it looks like in auctioning off their remaining stuff in their bankruptcy, NCIX has sold servers and drives that were not wiped and have customer information on them. Names, numbers, addresses, payment information, even employee tax information, sold to the highest bidder. Incredible.
