Re: Your opinions in Music that many would disagree with
There's a difference between someone like Cobain singing about the pains of addiction and some rapper talking about smoking weed, banging hoes and "poppin caps". Add to the fact that alot of the songs are just retatrded (laffy taffy anyone?) and rap is just easily the worst genre of music out there. Not to mention most rappers are fake anyways, for every black rapper dissing Vanillia Ice and the such, they might want to take a look in the mirror (50 Cent, Eminem, Ja Rule just to name a few).Comment

Here is my view on rap/hip hop:
It's definitely more about a statement on a lifestyle that emphasizes material worth and degrading women. The thing is tho, rap/hip hop always had room for more uplifting music or music that addresses the issues of street life in a more mature and thoughtful way. This has gone to the curb since the death of Tupac IMO.
Most mainstream rap/hip hop caters to a young audience who are wowed by bling bling, phat hoes and violence. I was watching a show on Much Music (Canada's MTV but they still play music) in which people involved in the rap/hip hop industry lamented the fact that the mainstream rap we hear is so shallow in many ways.
Then again there are exceptions. I saw and heard Eminem's latest video and I was shocked at the brutal honesty and maturity in the song (sorry the title escapes me)Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Mainstream rappers cater to the young surburban white kid who thinks that they know what the "street life" is about and they buy the albums up as soon as they come out. There are plenty of inspirational songs out there but you will never hear them because radio stations would rather play the same song over and over again. The mainstream does not represent all rappers and it's pretty sad that people would be ignorant enough to say that. If I judged rock by only what I heard on the radio then I would think that the entire genre is filled by pop bands who talk about nothing.Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. Re: Your opinions in Music that many would disagree with
The bottom line is that music is all about personal taste. Always has, always will. I like clasic rock, and I'm not gonna change. But I respect other people's tastes. For example, I hear System Of A Down on the radio and it sounds like a bunch of mindless chaotic screaming to me. But to others, it sounds like a harmony. I may disagree with their opinions, but I respect them. Just how it is. I feel the same way about rap. It all sounds like a bunch of recycled rehashed, remixed garbage. But again, to others, a symphony of sound. No prob. If you don't like it, just don't listen to it.How I wish, how I wish you were here. We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl year after year. Running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears. Wish you were here.Comment

The issue at hand with these two bashing on rap is not what their personal tastes are, it's their ignorance towards the genre. They are more than welcome to dislike rap music all they want -- personally, I have a strong dislike for it myself, as well -- but their reaons are ones based on inaccuracies. Nothing at all wrong with saying "I don't like rap music because the lyrics aren't something I can relate to and sympathize with, while the beats don't fit my musical stylings," but when you say "I hate rap music because it's all about guns, hos, and weed" it's a little different.Comment
