Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
I know, this drives me crazy when people call 3rd Person games an FPS. LOL!
This is a 3PS or TPS.
Did anyone buy the Collector's Edition? Was it worth the money? I wish Gamestop had the CE when I picked mine up, the metal case + art look nice.Comment

Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
I'm on act 4, hardcore, at this point the only thing I have to say is that there is one point on Act 3 where I thought I was going to quit the game and sell it. It took me about an hour to get from one side of a room to the next...if you've gotten there you know what I'm talking about.
Oh and playing co-op really enhances the fun.Comment

Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
There were some major shipping problems here in Virginia, so I just got the game this morning. All I can say is WOW. This game is fun as hell, well worth the wait IMO. Finally the 360 has it's must have/killer app game. How I wish, how I wish you were here. We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl year after year. Running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears. Wish you were here.Comment

Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
No. Perhaps you're misunderstanding me. When I'm in cover, I can see the around me. However, there isn't some kind of indicator that I can use to point in the direction I want to shoot in once I temporarily pop up and shoot from cover.
But anyway my 2 cents on the multiplayer part of the game.
Its different but I like it alot its not halo, socom, or anything like it heres why.
First of it takes around 30 to 50 rounds to kill someone unless you aim for the head with the shotty or head shot sniper round. This alone balances the playing field so much it aint even funny. Instead of the game being who ever gets the first good shot of wins its who makes the better decisions on the battlefield will get the kill 9 times out of 10. Which may be the main reason this game is so focused on team play and not rambo playing style we have grown used to with the last couple of online shooters.
On top of this I love that you regain health if your smart enough to get behind some cover and stop taking bullets in chest. Being able to revive a down teammate was a great idea I really didn't like it when I read about it but now I love. This makes team work a must if you want to win solo players who like to run and gun don't last long in this game at all.
Another great idea is that you swap spawns every other round so theres no advantage to either team.
All the guns are balanced unlike so many other games example. Sniper rifle is one shot and a long as reload and only head shots will take you down in one shot. The rocket launcher you don't get 8 or 12 rounds you get 2 ha how smart is that. These guys did a real good job on the weapons at first I like there aren't enough guns in this game but after I played 10 hours I see why. Quality over quantity I'll take that any day of the week.
Team work rules this game and it can get ugly if one team is working together and the other team is just 4 guys looking for a kill. An avg. team of shooters with good team working skills will dominate a superb shooting team that doesn't work as a team. This is mainly due to the fact that it takes so many rounds to kill someone. In halo 1&2 and socom 1&2 if you where a good shot you could dominate not here. Now don't get me wrong people with good stick skills are still effective but in this game the playing field is even.
Also the cover system here is just great either use the cover or be prepared to die alot and I mean alot.
Last imo it just seems that the gow team focused on gameplay and teamwork for online instead of lots of guns, vehicles, etc.... I just hope there good with new maps and a few more gameplay modes would have been great but I'm 100% satisfied with this 60$ purchase.
Also I see that alot people have been having problems getting chainsawed to death heres whay you do. Shot at their legs they fall on the ground and you wont be cut in half.Last edited by Russell_SCEA; 11-09-2006, 04:32 PM.Comment

Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
I hate how in Halo (and by the sounds of it Gow) you can have the drop on someone and you're not allowed to capatilize because everyone is Superman.
Depending on where you get hit, you should be killed with no more than 3-4 direct hits.
I'd actually prefer a game where it depends on where you get hit. If you're shot in the leg, you should limp or have to drag yourself to safety until healed by a teammate. Or if you're nailed in the arm you shouldn't be able to use it.
And of course if you're shot in the mellon you should be dead instantly.
If this game does force strategy then it should force realistic results when getting shot. At least try to make it somewhat realistic.
Having to get shot 50 times seems way too excessive and allows people who have no idea what they're doing become effective.
Now, I haven't played the game so I'm only going off of this info so I'd be delighted if someone could say I'm wrong.Comment

This is the exact reason why I will be buying RB6:Vegas over GoW.

Now don't get me wrong I'm not saying you don't have the advantage if you have the drop on some because that isn't true. You just have to be smart about it wait for the right moment and do his *** in when hes out in the open or just stalk his *** but that chainsaw in his grill. Also shooting at the head vs. the chest you will get the kill in that matchup everytime.
One because of reason I already stated it takes some rounds to down someone. Also you regain your health if you stop taking shots. Some online games have claimed to have intense fire fights but this one really hits the nail on the head. Anyone who has played the mansion map up stairs knows what I'm talking about. The action is very fast paced and intense.
In all the other shooters if you where outmaned 1 vs. 4 you where pretty much toast. Not so much the case if here If you know what your doing you can take out a 4 man team by yourself but it aint easy but to watch it is a thing of beauty. (this is of course if the 4 guys your up against aren't working as a team if they are your up **** creek without a paddle)Last edited by Russell_SCEA; 11-09-2006, 04:44 PM.Comment

Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
This game is in my Top 10 all time best videogames that I have ever played. All people are doing is complaining that this game didn't live up to expectations and hype, I don't know what everyone was expecting. Like USF said, this has to be the best game since RE4. I do have issues with the game of course as it's nowhere near being perfect, but man does it immerse you into the story/environments. You start to really care for your team.
I still haven't tried multiplayer and most likely I'll be doing that tonight. But the singleplayer is great and if it weren't for Guitar Hero 2 being out this week also, splitting time is killing me because both are so great.
It's a great game no doubt, but shouldn't you play it all the way through first?
Not a jab, just a question.Comment
