Well, you can choose at the screen when you choose game type to start matchmaking. The first option is ranked games. It has like Lone Wolves, Team Battle, etc. The 2nd option is the Skirmish I believe, that's where you can have up to 12 people in your party, and the final option is custom games. That's where you can set the game up how you want it. You don't rank up in custom games, but you can use the forge and other things to make the game the way you want it.

Re: Halo 3 Impressions
Wow, so many people have beaten the game, already. I'm still on the first mission on Heroic. I'm at the spot with the first really large battle, with tons of enemies in the distance, and I'm stuck with an energy sword and an assault rifle at the checkpoint. Working through that spot is going to take some doing. Love it.XBL: Mean Greene

Re: Halo 3 Impressions
I'm probably going to gamers hell for saying this, but Halo 3 is just another game to me. I ran some multiplayer last night with various game types and maps and it was all just very....eh. The maps aren't great, everyone just runs and jumps around seemingly without any coordinated strategy, it really doesn't break any new ground even for a Halo game.....it's all just very eh and even the matches that aren't deathmatch games feel like deathmatch games.
Eh. I'll play it until COD4 hits, but after that I'm likely gone. The backstory of the Halo games is really great, but the core game engine itself is tremendously overhyped, imo. Other games draw flak for being mindless shoot 'em up, but Halo 3 somehow escapes that criticism even though it's 10x worse from that perspective than almost any other game, simply because it's Halo.
Anyway, just my $0.02. The graphics are cool n' all that, but the game itself isn't impressing me at all right now.Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.

Ranked matches are just that - ranked.
Social matches are the best choice if you have a group of four or five friends who all want to play on XBL. You can join as a big party and kick some ***.
Basic Training is up to four people and is, really, just to get a handle on the controls of the game, and in my opinion, completely and utterly pointless.
Sandtrap is alright but I hate it for skirmish. Neat idea with moveable bases, but I hate the execution of the concept. I like the new and improved Zanzibar (Last Resort). Valhalla is still my favorite map for skirmish, though. Halo maps have always been more on the small side because the game itself is all about fast paced, twitch-firing. That doesn't mean there is no strategy because in most skirmish matches if you don't have strategy you are going to get beaten. Badly.Comment

Re: Halo 3 Impressions
Two entirely different games obviously. I got burnt out on Halo 2, but find this game to be very refreshing. It's still basically a "twitch shooter", but the strategic element is loss if you are not playing on teams.Comment

I've actually got a few people at my work that are saying the same thing you are. They don't go on message boards, they're just average gamers.
I don't really care about the online part, but I rented it to do the campaign. I had fun playing last night, but there's nothing out of this world about it. Graphically it's nice, but I do think Gears topped it in the visuals department. Still in all a good time, and a fun rental, but Mass Effect is more up my alleyPSN: JISTIC_OS

Re: Halo 3 Impressions
Nothing wrong with not liking the game. Not everyone is going to like the same thing. I am sure you're not alone.
I myself, enjoyed the hell out of the game last night. Once again I only played mutliplayer, but I had a blast, even with randoms. It's a game I can hop online at anytime, get a game going no matter if friends are on or not and have a blast. Games that are more startegic like RB6 and COD, I don't feel like I can do that. I have to have guys online that I play with because they are more team based games. I enjoy both kinds though.
Halo 3 doesn't really blow me away and it doesn't feel "new", it feels like past versions, but to me that's not a bad thing. I know what I was getting, new maps, new weapons and a few new things for the online aspect and for me, that was enough. I sold Halo 2 once I got my 360 at launch and had not played since, so for me Halo 3 is very fresh.
Will it get played as much as Halo 2 or last as long with me, who knows, but right now I am having fun.Comment

Re: Halo 3 Impressions
I got the game mainly to complete the trililogy to see how it ends, for a player like me it's really not worth $60 as I rarely play online. But the multiplayer aspect of the game is well worth it, there are so many options for online. I wish I was better at online shooters, but I pretty much suck, not enough practice I guess. Maybe this game will spur me to play online more as it seems like a waste for me not to. Anybody want a terrible player in their clan?Comment
