    Re: Halo 3 Impressions

Does anyone else think pressing the d-pad to talk is incredibly ********? Why can't we just all talk to each other like in every other game ever? I don't want to be involved in combat trying to defend a flag or something and have to worry about pressing the d-pad so I can inform my team that our flag is under attack. What's the point of this?

      I don't like it either, it's a pain in the ***.

is there any valid reason they make you push the d-pad? I don't remember it in Halo 2 but i might be mistaken. Do I have to hold it down or just hit it once and it'll work? That seriously deters team play, I'm all ready not as quick on the controller as some of the younger players, let alone if I'm trying to shoot while hit the d-pad and go "We're under attack"

              I like it. Here's why.

You talk and you don't press the button...you hear it through your speakers IF you're close to the person who is talking, whether the player is on your team or not.

You talk and DO press the button...no matter what, your enemies don't hear you.

              I like having the option.

I believe it was the "white" button in Halo 2, but didn't that game also have proximity chat? Like, you could hear your teammates you were close to, without having to press the button? I also think enemies could hear you, too.

                I can't remember...

                  Re: Halo 3 Impressions

You hit it once and it will work for a period of time.

You'll hear a sound to signal it is on, and when you hear that sound again it means you're no longer communicating.

                  It's annoying as hell.

To build on TJ's point, though, it is also realistic. If you talk, people around you can hear you. If you press the button you're speaking into the channel that only your teammates have. It's like having a radio/comm unit in real life. It's annoying, but cool, at the same time.

Wasn't it like that in Halo 2 also?

I thought you could hear each other without the button being pushed unless far away? Can't the other team hear you if your close by ?

I guess I just think people should always hear you if they're nearby, but also all your teammates (no matter how far away) should hear you. I'll get used to hitting the button or whatever, just seems dumb to have to take your thumb off of controls to talk to your team.

i saw some complaints earlier about map size for 12-16 players....

Halo has always best been played as a 4v4 game. Most of the maps are designed for this, so thats why there arent many options for the big team stuff. Down the road im sure they will release some big maps, but for now, 4v4 is the best way to play halo

You can also mess around in the settings and it'll effect who you hear, who you don't without hitting the button, etc.

In team games, I think your teammates hear you no matter what, you do not need to press the button. You only need to press it to talk in a regular slayer (non-team) games (and there are more than 4 players or something, otherwise, you don't need to press it to talk). In team games, if you press the d-pad I think it is for everyone, including the other team, to hear you. That is from my experience at least.
