Yeah that's definitely normal, depends on your character and your play style too. My current character, a two-hand Nord hasn't died as much as my first character, a stealth wood archer. Although, on my last run with my Nord I died three times in a row before I finally was able to complete this one quest:

Now my big decision is who to join in the Civil War. I'm going to say the imperials because I can't stand Ulfric and Windhelm.

I got the game for Christmas too and am dying a good bit. I wanted an archer and the arrows just don't seem to hurt people very much, and to draw them takes so long. Hopefully that gets stronger. So I end up just changing to a sword or something and hack away. I die if I have to go up against more than two people at a time though. I don't play first person games so this is a big change for me. I have changed the view to third person but I'm struggling with lining up a reticule to hit someone with a sword.

I also need to start increasing magicka when I level up. I can't even summon the flame atronach I bought because I don't have enough magicka lol. Firebolt also takes like half of my magicka too. Still stuck with flames until then I guess.
Sounds like you're playing a magic-focused character, which is the hardest type of character to play early in the game because, like you have said, you'll run out of magic a lot and you will be very squishy. Also, early on as mage it is very difficult to find items (especially staves and +magic gear) that help you. It gets better if you stick to it and pump points into mana though.

Depending on what race you chose, Archery starts at different levels. In any case though, stick with it. Archery is extremely powerful, stick with it, use your perks and you'll be be face rolling in no time.

I started at a 25, I think it is a 26 now. Only played a little while. I've used two perks on Over-Draw to make it more powerful. I'll keep putting them there.

This is a fun game, just very overwhelming at the start when you've never played something like this before.

Nothing better then hunting deer with your bow, throughout the wilderness. When I have to go long distances that's what I do. My archery level is 44 while one handed and two handed are 32 and 37. My guy is a true warrior right now.

                  Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Some tips for archers just starting out:

                  - Conserve the better arrows. Save them for a rainy day. Also, go into every shop that sells arrows and buy them all (except iron arrows).

                  - Level sneak like crazy.

                  - Get Steady Hand ASAP; you might not think it, but it makes a HUGE difference. Hunter's Discipline is underrated as well; it allows you to use more powerful arrows more often and still maintain your supply.

                  - Hit and run is a legit strategy - especially against bosses. You do not want to get into a close-quarters slugfest. You want most of your damage against bosses to come from sneak attacks. So stay hidden until they come out, hit them, then run and hide until they forget about you. Rinse and repeat.

                  - When travelling through the wilderness, keep your eyes peeled if you're going off-road and use sneak if you have the patience. Being surprised in the open is the worst thing that can happen to archers.

I'm at 116 hours, and I still need to finish the two main story arcs. Even now I am still getting surprised by little things, Insignificant spoiler. I gave a little girl in solitude a coin, so now when she sees me, she says,

I'm trying to finish these last two big arcs, but guards keep casually mentioning stuff that needs to be done, and I feel compelled to go clean those places out before the end game.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

I started the adventures of Redbone yesterday. He is a wood elf that is going the native american route: archery, hunting/tanning/skinning, with an emphasis on stealth. I've upgraded archery the most (at least the point where I must wait on my leveling on it to acquire perks) and my 'secondary' perk I'm going after is sneak.

Anyway, I managed to play for only about 6 hours yesterday so not a whole lot going on thus far. Is there a Thief Guild to join?
