Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Don't fret too much man. It took me a while to grasp not only building my facilities, but also managing my budget. I blew a ton of money and resources on upgrades for my soldiers but paid the price by not upgrading my interceptors. I failed to bring down the first large UFO that my satellites picked up. After researching more upgrades for the interceptors, I am finally catching up.
Just make sure to build things like power generators and workshops side by side to get the adjacency bonuses.Comment

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
It seems you can influence the creation of support units, but that may just be coincidence as the rest seems random.
I've purposely sent rookies in using assault tactics (I only have one assault guy and he's also my most experienced-if he goes, I'm screwed). I've tried to hit guys from farther who I want to be snipers, etc. Nothing influences it from what I can tell.
However, I've given medkits to rookies and each time I've used one, they became a support unit. Small sample (5 or 6 times), so as I said, it may be coincidence, but it's the only thread of consistency I've seen.
The whole playing the hand your dealt was the design decision here. But once you unlock the upgrade in the officer training school they will come into the game at the squadie rank.Comment

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
4 Words Ghost Armour and Psi labs hellllllllllz yeah.
If you have an assault leveled up with the perk tree to the right and you give him ghost armor and a shotgun every shot he takes is pretty much a critical hit. I have a guy called "Shotgun" he hits for 15 damage like it's nothing. I call him the Sectopod killer.Comment

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
ok, my ironmode game save corrupted....bah! Be careful, apparently this is a non issue. After some missions, you come back and the geoscape view gets locked and you are unable to continue. I am on PC so not sure that it is a console issue.Comment

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Well, I finally had one of those tremendous sadness moments in this game. I went into a battle, one I thought would be routine, with 6 of my top guys who were made up of two captains, two majors, and two SGTs. I lost every last one of them in this single battle. I actually felt a sense of mourning and was pretty saddened. I had gone through a ton of battles with that group and now......they are gone.......they are just all gone.Comment

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Lost my original officer Alexander Rodriguez a couple missions back. He was a heavy who kind eventually fell out of favor as I've been relying more on the assault class recently. Although, he slid in rank to second behind Melissa Jericho, the guy never complained and always was ready for the call. Well he got the call during a mission to save civilians and fell to the hands of a Chrysallid. It was an excruciating decision as both him and Jericho were in a tough spot, and I decided to have Jericho fall back in order to save her. It's decisions like these that really immerse you into this game. That Chrysallid mission was horrible, but I was able to save my top guys which really is the main objective of this game. You really have to limit your losses when things go bad because they eventually will no matter how prepared you are.
I've recently recruited Major Melissa Jericho's sister Bobbie Jericho who is a sniper. I lost my one and only sniper Billy Clinton a couple missions back, it was actually his first mission with a battle scanner and he didn't even get to use it.
I really need to budget better because I think the wheels are coming off financially for me.....Comment

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
So, now I"m having a reverse problem. All my top guys are staying alive, but my rookies keep dying.
Now granted, I don't have the same emotional attachment, but still...if my top guys start dying, I'm in HUGE trouble.Too Old To Game Club

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
When I need to level up my rookies I normally pair three of them with SHIV and squad sight sniper per mission. But if you wait to long in the game to bring rookies up your in deep terrible. Especially if your playing Classic difficulty.Comment

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
I still haven't stunned that one alien type that spawns in the UFO and the one that Dr. Vahren has set as an objective for you, I think it's the third alien type you have to stunned and capture alive. Well I'm getting far into the game so I really want to capture one, and the past few missions I've been down to two guys so I wasn't willing to take the chance of stunning the alien because if I missed I would've have lost two of my top assault classes. So the previous UFO crash mission, I had set up perfectly. Max Gold my assault captain was about to go in for the stun, but I forgot I had my Chinese Support Guy, just known as Smokes in overwatch. Well its the aliens turn and he decides to move, and whaddya ya know? Smokes pops him. Pretty dumb mistake on my part, but it was pretty funny because Smokes is a medic and he never takes a shot unless it's absolutely necessary.
Btw the SHIV is awesome, it acts as cover, a guardian, can take on an enemy when on the offensive if it has a clear shot.
I've never been a fan or good at strategy games, especially the RTS ones but this game is just flat out awesome in terms of gameplay and base-building. I love the turn-based aspect and you really thinking out moves, whereas in RTS games it's kind of mindless clicking after awhile.Last edited by willIam9387; 10-14-2012, 06:02 PM.Comment

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
I remember when I played the original, I would have SEVERAL saves spread out hours apart so if and when things would go bad and I was unable to get things back under control I could load a save from hours before and try a different approach as far as research and what I might choose to build.
I don't have very many hours into this new version, and this might not be possible in iron-man mode or whatever, but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to have a back-up save so you can restart from a few hours back rather than restarting from scratch.Comment

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
If you turn on auto-save but not ironman mode, you can do all of that. During a battle, it does three auto-saves. When you're at the base, there's one auto-save. You can also create as many of your own saves as you want, I believe.MLB: Cincinnati Reds
