This does have rookie developer written all over it though.

This is something we have to remember. This is an indie game after all. The hype surrounding this game is crazy. And I'm sure its not making things easy for them. I can't be too mad about anything. As long as the game is good, that's all I care about.

These aren't rookies, they've all been devs for over a decade, and Hello Games have been around over half a decade and have 4 previous games released. They aren't even a rookie publisher, they published every game they released on some platform.

I thought they only did Joe Danger. So I stand corrected.

But also, I just read that Kotaku and Polygon technically broke the embargo on the game. If that's true then I don't really feel like that's cool either. This is kind of a mess.

          No Man's Sky

They might be an indie developer but they're coming in at an AAA price point. $60 isn't small change. Review sites know that people want info on it so they're going out of their way to get it so they can cash in.

Years in development and a $60 price I think they could have spent more time figuring out the last few business pieces and less time on guilt tweets about watching "leaked" videos

If they don't give you a copy how can they embargo you? In my mind that's like EA or SCEA trying to embargo someone from OS who buys a copy from posting in the forums.

I'm not sure how that works. It's just what I read from a short blurb on Facebook. Which isn't always the most reliable source.

I do think someone here said there was an embargo till Monday night. So I don't who all that applies to.

                Re: No Man's Sky

I have no problems with any media breaking the embargo. The embargo is only there to benefit publishers and developers, and the media is attempting to inform consumers without an agenda (usually). It's certainly in the the pubs/devs interest to restrict access and embargo reviews, but it's of no benefit to consumers and potential consumers to know less about the thing they're going to buy.

I will admit, the weird thing about games these days is the day one patch, as it certainly has the potential to contradict a lot of pre-release findings. I'm not sure what the media's approach should be in this scenario. Should they simply caution readers that all reported information does not account for the incoming day one patch? Or acknowledge it at all?

Are most games these days the game on the disc? Or the game with the day one patch? Or the game with the day one patch plus the first title update? Which is the version of the game the media is both responsible for reporting to the public on, but being fair not to misrepresent and damage the market for the publishers and developer?

There have been four Joe Danger games (1, 2, infinity, and touch).

Sony has allegedly sent out an email saying (presumably) that saves won't be compatible with the day-1 patch, so careful if you get the game early as your save will be boned come the patch.

They are making this day 1 patch out to be a pretty big deal. I mean I think its great if it makes the game better. I really hope we get patch notes. It will be interesting to see what changes were made.

                        I hope it doesn't.

Strange comparison though. They are two completely different game types, though I think this has more to fall on because this kind of game can give you potentially hundreds more hours of investment (though I doubt I would ever reach the century mark myself, that's just too much gaming).

Besides, I think people here liked The Order.

I think the biggest lesson here is hire a PR person, or at least have the spokesperson for the game not seem so cynical towards their audience. If they would have just said a week ago that the game on disc is virtually incomplete and the day 1 patch was fixing and changing the game in drastic ways, there would have been MUCH less controversy. Also, while you are at it, announce the PC delay when it was decided and just explain why, people are more understanding when they know. Do that and there's less salt thrown at you and the game, and it becomes laughing at the guy who paid 1.2k just to play an incomplete game.

There might be an interesting corollary though, the very lukewarm reviews really killed The Order. The Order's sales were initially very strong, that first week they sold like 600k worldwide. Considering the dodgy relationship with reviewers who knows where reviews will fall, especially if the patch doesn't arrive before the review embargo (considering the server reset Saturday, I'm guessing the patch will launch then or before).

I don't think the game is gonna flop. I think it will be one of those games that will end up with a cult following. I think it will be good with the potential to be great with patches.

But the big thing to remember is that this game isn't for everyone. If you have little to no interest in space exploration and not a fan of grinding then you probably won't like it.

                                Just my thoughts.
