Finished Days Gone last night. 100% completion in 120 hours on hard difficulty. Would have the platinum trophy (despite having zero interest in trophies/achievements) but that boosting and drifting trophy at the same time is a huge pain in the ***.
Anyway, what can I say besides that I loved the entire game with the exception of the opening 8 hours or so, not because it's bad because it isn't but it takes time to get going but once it does, oh man, right up my alley.
A few minor negatives. Main one being the frame rate which drops badly in the last two regions for some odd reason where as the rest of the world wasn't bad at all. It's mostly when traversing on your bike because it seems like the world can't keep up with the speed of your bike at that time as I had it maxed out. But the frame rate only dropped when I was traversing on the bike. Didn't have any issues of the bike or in combat including against the massive hordes. Frame rate holds. Not being able to swim and drown in water that doesn't even touch Deacon's head was annoying a few times as was walking slow for some odd reason in a foot of water. The human enemy AI was good and bad at times.
The gunplay and shooting mechanics are poor in the beginning of the game but once you get better weapons, it improves. When you start and have level 1 weapons that are listed as "junk", yeah, they will be bad. By 2/3rds, I had a level 5 shotgun and level 4 assault rifle and combined with skills and using focus for the hordes, they felt great and nothing was more satisfying than shooting a human enemy or freaker in the face and his head is blown off.
Story and characters are the strongest aspect of the game and I enjoyed it all from beginning to end. Won't say much except that all the characters have their own distinct persona as do all the camps. Some of the writing especially early on is annoying but otherwise, better than I was expecting.
Visually, it's a 10/10 for me. Except for the pop-in which is somewhat bad but also in every damn open world game, it's minor for me. HDR is excellent on my mid-tier Sony X800D TV so I can only imagine what it looks like on high tier sets and OLED's.
The music, sound and voice acting is all excellent in my opinion.
My biggest positives go to the freakers as they juke, lunge, dodge, circle around you and flank you. Fighting hordes is definitely a challenge until you get better weapons and even then, you can still be easily overwhelmed if you screw up. Other positives are of course, the story and characters but also the world itself. Dynamic weather of rain, wind, snow and seeing how it all interacts in the world is great. And finally, I absolutely loved all the different "storylines" that are in the game and how everything in the world is tied to a single or multiple storylines.
Anyway, post is long enough. Hehe. Overall for me, my most anticipated game since E3 2016 did NOT disappointment me as it was a combination of a Ubisoft style open world game, Mad Max, TLOU in the world of the Walking Dead and Sons of Anarchy vibe.
Overall, an excellent 9.5/10 and my new 2019 game of the year as it surpassed Metro Exodus (which is excellent in it's own right) for me. Also became my third best and favorite game of the generation behind only The Witcher III and God of War. Previous third best game (now fourth) was Horizon Zero Dawn.
Huge congratulations and props to Bend Studio as they have finally emerged from hibernation with one hell of an amazing game.
