I understand you're sore, but was it harder then before?

Both of these programs offer something different and unique. I love that insanity is shorter than p90, but I really don't need to lose weight.
I would love to get a certain "spring" in my step back though for basketball starting up soon.

    Thanks for any help
I definitely think I lost some strength, but not a whole lot. I could still get through my normal weight workout, but it was a little tougher than normal.

I lost more with P90X, but primarily because I had more to lose. I was at about 175 when I started P90X and lost about 15 pounds to get to 160 (most in the first 4 weeks). I got back up to about 165-167 before Insanity and got back down to 160 after completion.

However, I changed my diet when I started P90X and have kept at it since, so had I done the two workouts in reverse order, I think the weight drops would have been indentical.

Also, if you are worried about losing weight, you can easily just increase the portion sizes to compensate.

If you are trying to get in basketball shape, I think Insanity will help you get that spring back. You will be much better conditioned and your legs will be much stronger for basketball activities.

      Re: Insanity

Started up Insanity round #2 on Sunday. Two days in and already hating it, but the first couple of days have not been as bad as the first time through.

My Fit test scores were all down from the final results of round 1, but were significantly higher than when I started round 1.

It's been about 4 or 5 weeks since I stopped my regular 3-4 times a week workout routine and I am definitely paying for the break.

For the people who have done the program do you feel the meal plan calorie formula is spot on for gaining/maintaining/losing weight?

Right now it's telling me I need 3300 calories just to maintain. That's 5 pretty big meals a day which is hard to do. I don't want to wither away though and lose 8 months of solid lifting.

            Re: Insanity

So I had been planning for the last couple weeks to get a gym membership, and had a routine in mind and everything. That is until I saw the infomercial for Insanity. I never knew quite what it was. After reading up on it, I am dead set on starting this program, no matter how hard it sounds. I've tried and tried for a couple years to stay motivated to get in shape, and seeing the results people are having, and the fact that NO equipment is needed, I think this program is for me.

I have a couple questions though. One, I am 6' and 193 pounds, and in decent shape. I feel like 6' 193 isn't all that bad, but I could be in much better shape as it stands. Is this a program I can start, and just keep up as much as I can, even if I can't completely finish workouts? I don't want to get discouraged, but it sounds like other start in the same position I am in, go at their own pace, then start keeping up with the workouts after a couple weeks of "breaking into" the workouts.

Another thing. I've seen people recommend the BeachBody Results and Recovery formula, but there's no way i'm paying that much for what looks to be overpriced whey. I've had good results before with Body Fortress Whey from Walmart, and I plan on sticking with that. Aside from whey protein post workout, what do you guys recommend for BEFORE the Insanity workouts? I will probably wake up and want to be working out within a half hour or so, so I won't have much time to digest anything big. Would something like a banana suffice? Anything during the workout?

Thanks guys. Can't wait to order this and get underway!

Yeah, just go for it and take breaks when you need to (which is what the instructor tells you over and over again). Your hip flexors and legs will probably be sore as hell during the first week and the burpees will probably suck at the start but you'll get it eventually.

Thanks for the response man. Yeah, I was doing burpees as part of a workout a few months ago. They were awful

Whatever works though. I'm ready to give this all i've got.

Getting cut, no doubt. Even when I was planning on hitting the gym, it was less sets/more reps to help with weight loss. Any muscle retained is a bonus.

Being a father of two and happily married, I really have no interest in getting jacked. I just want to get back to my high school weight, and to cut fat off the "tougher" areas. This seems to be the program to end programs when it comes to trimming down.

Then my suggestion is to light weights, but more reps. If you want to get cut. P90 works really good, but the reason it works is because of the diet and the routine. Sticking with it is key. This other program I am sure works too. Eating right is key in my opinion too.

Well, this should be here by Friday. Can't wait to get underway.

Question about a post workout drink though. I'm seeing a lot of people around the web are using chocolate milk for a recovery drink, stating that the carbs are much needed after such an intense workout. Is whey protein with water not good enough? I've never heard of it really being important to have all that many carbs after a workout. I just want to nail down my meals AROUND the workout, as I want to make sure I have energy to get through them, and the proper nutrients to recover from them afterwards.

I wouldn't worry too much about it to be honest mate.

Carbs post workout as supposed to spike insulin which may lead to an increase in post workout recovery / muscle gains (mind you most of the studies showing that are 100% sponsored by supplement companies so take it for what it's worth) but i think as long as your overall diet is in check it's not going to make a hell of a difference.

There are some recent studies coming out from legit sources saying low fat chocolate milk is pretty much the perfect blend of carbs and protein for post workout recovery so it may be an option but as with lots of things in this area people spend heaps of time and money worrying about things that might make 1% difference and less time focusing on what actually gets the results (ie solid diet and consistent exercise program).

The supplements from beachbody are nothing amazing or special so just stick with your whey and you'll do fine imo. If you have to use supplements you can get the exact same thing as what's in the beachbody stuff for a fraction of the price.

Prepare to have your *** kicked, these workouts are tough to get through!

Thanks man. I did some more research after I posted that, and came up with a pre and post workout drink for this. Pre workout, 4oz water, 4oz Orange Juice, 1 scoop of whey. Post workout, 12oz chocolate milk and a banana. Nothing fancy. I'm not too worried about the pre and post workout drinks when it comes to the diet, as i've got that all planned out. It's more or less just to make sure my body has enough fuel to get through workouts, and to recover for the next days workout.

I just wish the DVD's would get here! I'm pumped to get underway with this. I'm sure i'll want to cry after the first workout, but i've gotta be willing to push myself through this thing if I want to permanently change my lifestyle.

Yeah you'll be all good, not like you are a complete newb in the fitness department. I doubt many people outside of the extremely fit could get through everything in one of these workouts the first time so you just gotta do what you can do and keep pushing yourself and results will come.

I would ditch the OJ pre workout if your goal is fat loss. Fast acting carbs pre workout will just hinder fat loss imo (not to mention i would throw up if i tried to do insanity with a belly full of of juice and whey). Personally i like to do caffeine pre-workout (it's been shown to improve workouts and even improve fat oxidation in some studies) then the post workout shake as my goal is fat loss then minimum recovery time.

Do what works best for you though, you never know until you try.

I need to learn to just ask questions here instead of Google . I appreciate the help man. I figured the carbs in the OJ would help keep me going. I just feel like black coffee would be a little odd before a workout, unless that's the norm. Are there any other healthy alternatives to getting some caffeine into me before the workout?
