    Re: 2012 FITNESS CHALLENGE

As you know I'm a big fan of IF. My only problem with it is that lately as I've really stepped up the length and intensity of my lifting I've started getting dizzy post workout so I have been needing to eat to stop that. I'm fine on off days or cardio only days but have been needing food following weight lifting days. I think IF might work better if you train later in the day or maybe I just need to give my body some time to adjust.

For those that are unaware this is the Intermittent fasting / leangains website: http://www.leangains.com/

This is a cool article debunking many of the commonly held bodybuilding beliefs: http://www.leangains.com/2010/10/top...-debunked.html

and this is a cool blog about IF that I found from this trainer in Japan who uses IF with his clients and gets awesome results: http://rippedbody.jp/

      Re: 2012 FITNESS CHALLENGE

Have you taken a BCAA prior to workout? He says in the articles that it's necessary, as it's basically a calorie free way to feed and fuel the muscles during workout. This way, it doesn't interfere with your fasting, but you're not running on empty. I'm thinking that perhaps taking the amount of BCAA he recommends plus Jack3d pre workout will get me through the workout, then I can start my feeding period right after, with both a protein shake and a high protein meal. I'm just worried that taking Jack3d on an empty stomach (other than the BCAA) will cause issues, but it's something i'd have to give a shot.

That's really the only way it would work for me, as working overnight, I have to get my workouts in at around 5pm, as I sleep anywhere from 8-9 until 4:30 or so, and the wife and kids are home around 6.

        Re: 2012 FITNESS CHALLENGE

Yeah I drink xtend (BCAA) during my workout and take a pre-workout supp as well. I think maybe because my workouts are pretty long and intense and focus on the really draining exercises like deadlifts and atg barbell squats etc I'm just depleting my glycogen to a point i'm getting dizzy. Honestly it's not as bad as it was a few weeks ago so I'm slowly adjusting to it so I'm going to try it again full time because I loved the convenience of it and the results have been good so far.

Jack3d or nearly any pre-workout supp on an empty stomach = crazy energy for me. You'll feel like you can run through a brick wall if you are anything like me but everyone seems to respond to supps differently so let us know how it goes.

          Re: 2012 FITNESS CHALLENGE

One concern i'm running into regarding Leangains is that Martin recommends a low rep/high load workout based around squats, deadlifts, etc. All I have is dumbbells in the basement, so I could probably max out my weight down there right now for both exercises, as the Selecttech's only go up to 55 lbs. I'm thinking I want to still do the diet, but I may alter all of his workout toward dumbbells, and once I hit the max weight my dumbbells will handle, i'll have to up the reps. I also don't have a pullup bar, which is also recommended.

Wondering if his workout is worth it, or if I should stick to possibly doing a hybrid of the IF Leangains diet along with my own dumbbell routine i've been doing the past couple weeks.

I'm sure as you remain fairly active, the Leangains/IF approach will work, especially if you are trying to cut weight. I'm doing the Stronglifts approach, along with IF, and I'm seeing nice results.

I just think you'll max out those dumbbells very early. I could be wrong, but I don't think you can upgrade those dumbbells like you can with Powerblocks. If you're in need of additional resistance and are concerned about cost, I would cop a set of Bodylastics resistance bands. There is some set that provides something like 400 lbs of resistance.

I ran out of jack3d yesterday, and I'm going to gnc after work to re stock. I would like to try something different, because I think my body is getting used to the jack3d.

Bought some C4 Extreme. I've heard some good things about it from some co workers and a few of my other friends. GNC had it cheaper than the store at my gym, bcause it was on a hot buy.. about 15 dollars cheaper than usual.

Got a sample of that when I ordered some multis from GNC a while back. Fruit punch flavor tasted pretty good, and I did get a little pump even though I only used one serving each time.

My lower back is killing me from being at the gym yesterday. I need to look into another bed as that could also be the problem.

Do you think the IF diet will work well with a pure dumbbell routine as opposed to an overall high weight low rep routine? I don't want to wind up too skinny if I'm not gonna be able to efficiently build muscle while on the diet.

I think you'll be fine with what you are planning in the beginning but you might plateau within 3-6 months if you are really pushing yourself every workout. You can get a decent physique with just bodyweight and DB's but like any resistance program you'll just have to continually try to improve things and make it harder as you go to make progress.

For me half the battle is finding something you will stick with as much as finding what is 'best' because there really is no such thing imo. If you think you can and will stick with the DB training approach then go for it because so much of this game is about consistency and if you find it enjoyable and it fits into your lifestyle you'll stick with it for the long haul which equals results.

My suggestion would be to start out with what you are planning and see how it goes. If it's not challenging enough for you or you aren't seeing the results you want after 3 months then re-evaluate and look at changing things up. Do you have room for a more traditional home gym setup in your home?

Seriously all you really need is a power rack, a decent barbell, some weight plates and some dumbbells imo and you are set for life lifting wise. You can often pick those things up for dirt cheap from places like Craigslist so if you have the room and plan to lift for many years then it might be option worth looking it.

I'd suggest cycling off a pre-workout sup for a few weeks at least if you just finished a whole container of Jack3d Chase. No doubt they are good stuff for performance in the gym but they take a toll on your CNS and if you cycle off for a while you'll get more bang for your buck once you go back on it.

Never been a fan of these 'cleansing' type diets, especially for those who strength train frequently. Just seems to gimmicky to me and as long as you are primarily eating good whole food's like lean protein and veges I don't see the need for it but each to their own. Let us know how it goes if you do end up doing it.

Argh grueling workout today... Started with Deadlifts.. and that was a big mistake. Don't do a huge compound workout like Deadlifts first, if you have a pretty big circuit ahead of you.

Did Bent Rows, Arnold Presses, Seated Shoulder presses, side laterals, standing shrugs, dumbbell raises, Cable extensions, and finished off with a burnout set of Dumbbell curls... until I couldn't go anymore; and I didn't even want to do any biceps today I just felt like throwing it in there.

Man now I am rewarding myself with a huge plate of Ground Beef mixed with fresh cut Salsa, a bowl of Veggies... and this delicious Cookies 'n Cream Protein Shake.

Had a great chest/shoulders workout today. I'm noticing a big difference taking Jack3d pre workout.

I also came to the realization that i'm overthinking basically everything i'm doing. I feel great in my third week hitting the weights, and yet i'm still trying to tweak and tweak until my head pops, thinking that i'm just not doing enough. I've always had this problem when it came to fitness. For now, i'm just going to stick with my routine of Chest/Shoulders/Abs on Monday, Bi's/Tri's/Legs on Wednesday, and Back/Legs/Abs on Friday. Just gotta work on the diet, and get it down to a science.

What's the best BMR calculator on the web? I get different results from most all of them. I just want to know what my maintenance level should be for calories, and adjust my daily intake from there.

One more question. As of right now, i'm taking Jack3d pre workout and 2 scoops of whey protein (52g) post workout. Should I add in some BCAA or something similar during the workout, or am I all set? Just curious as to what you guys do.
