Had 2 weddings, one on Sat and one on Sun...needless to say...lots of non-billable time today at work.

Hit a roadblock yesterday. Have no clue why but my chest feels strained, right in the center where the two pecs meet. Tried to stretch it out yesterday in order to lift and only made it worse. Crazy thing is I haven't worked out in about 6 days. I just woke up and it was sore. I also had this same thing about 3 months ago. Same situation, no lifting just woke up that way. It took about 2 weeks to go away. Pisses me off because I was making steady gains in muscle and strength and now I'll probably have to wait 2 weeks before I lift again.

Any chance you are bouncing the bar off of your chest during lifts? Possible bruising of the sternum would be my guess. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o></o>

That's what I thought the first time but then realized the main spot of pain is above the nipples and I bring the bar just below them on the bench press. Also I haven't lifted since last wednesday.

So my coworkers have all ridiculed me for doing weight machines at my gym instead of benching and free weights. I'm a bit intimidated. Any suggestions?

There is nothing wrong with machines IMO. I do think you need to do a mix of free weights and machines though, you can't just do all machine. But I don't see anything wrong with machines

Whatever you're comfortable with with meeting your goals who cares? I never really understood the "meat heads" or "iron jockeys" who like to belittle people.

Well I might try benching and squats this weekend. The issue is that I never learned how to do it and I usually go by myself to the gym.

Yeah making fun of people who are trying to better themselves is very moronic. The reason some people prefer free weights over machines is that you're forced to balance the weight much more than if you were using machines. Another reason is most machines force you into a certain range of motion which can be good and bad. Not all people have the same range of motion, and if the machine is causing any pain other then normal muscle soreness then I would stop using it. So if you're just starting out do whatever is more comfortable for you and gets you results. Hope that helps some.

I would advise you to being a spotter. From experience by a friend of mine you never know what can happen.

Another thing the "nutrition community" is split on. Lots out there say nothing but a placebo (except for in infants, where the long-chain omega 3's help nurture brain development) while others say reduced BP, heart health and some say it helps ease joint pain.

I've never taken fish oil pills on their own, but my multivitamins include the omega chains.

Anyone that calls fish oil a placebo just doesn't know what they're talking about. But I don't know if it's really necessary to take fish oil pills. Of course, it'd be better to get it naturally, and if you can't then something is better than nothing. But I'm not sure of the exact level of benefit to say it should be taken in concentrated doses like that on a daily basis.
