The larger & growing problem in this pandemic is how each state - and then each local county & city - is dealing with all of this. It's like everyone is making up the "rules" as they go. Things are called "mandates" but no one really knows if it's a true mandate. Nobody knows if their rent will be due, or we're going to see landlords finally put their foot down. Some governors in the NE are putting their heads together and trying to create their own re-acclimation plan. It's all just sad. There is so much hatred toward each political party from the other side that it's become a pissing contest, but it's human life at stake. Some might be proud to be in this country - but I'm having a hard time with patriotism in this current situation. The whole thing is an amoeba that's fluctuating like a rubber-band without clarity on who is making the decisions and who is going to defy them. In 2001 we banded together in pride. Nearly 20 years later it's every man for himself. Pathetic.

I agree with you, MK.
I said in here previously that we banded and united together as one after 2011, but today, seems to more about politics.
I know the Governor's on the west coast are teaming up and I'm sure the midwest states will team up as well.

Re: CDC Officials Warn of Coronavirus Outbreaks in the United States.
I have checked out of this thread for a while but have a couple thoughts.
1. There are ways out of this without a vaccine. If treatments can be developed that mitigate symptoms that largely mitigates the threat. We aren't there yet obviously.
2. I don't believe people are as divided as some seem to in this thread. Similarly, I also believe that it may seem we are more divided than we are because of the impact of social media and the rise of click bait journalism. That isn't directed at any specific source of news, but just an observation by someone who consumes news from many sources with many different viewpoints. I find it best to tune out (even though I still struggle with that).
3. To completely dismiss the value of reopening the economy is just as naive as dismissing the threat of the virus. There is a point where the economic damage created has longer term consequences than that of the virus. I don't know what that point is nor do I care to speculate when that is, but it does exist.

Re: CDC Officials Warn of Coronavirus Outbreaks in the United States.
Main difference between 2001 and now it is probably social media. Pretty much everyone is allowed to have an opinion and share it freely. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, just a different thing. It also mean that what some people perceived as "coming together" in 2001 was, in some way, artificial, meaning if we had 2020 tools in 2001 that "coming together" feeling might had occurred differently or maybe not at all.
And yes part of the heightened discord in politics and society in today's day and age is due to social media. But whining about it isn't a solution, "going back" isn't a solution.
People couldn't freely share what they thought; now they are unfiltered and many don't like what they see. As I see it, that was always there (and it has been exacerbated in some cases), and I prefer it out in the open rather than not.
And this concludes my Pop Sociology discussion.Last edited by Master Live 013; 04-14-2020, 12:11 PM.OSHA Inspector for the NBA.Comment

1. Personally, I think it depends where you are in life as far as the treatments go for me. I have parents and in-laws with underlying conditions that I would still like to protect from this virus. That's why I feel, for me, once we are given the green light to roam around more, I won't be going to sporting events or anywhere with large crowds, especially if I don't have the virus. I'd prefer to wait it out for a vaccine, but anyone's MMV.
2. I agree that social media has played a role in people freely expressing their opinion on either side of the fence, but I also feel the pull and tug, ying and yang comes from the media and the press conferences our country is witnessing on a daily basis. Heck, even the state of Wisconsin made national news a week ago by holding the primary election out in the polling places vs pushing the voting further into the future, politics and media played a large part in all of that.
3. I don't think anyone in here is disagreeing the country needs to be opened, but our governments need to make sure that it's safe(or it could come around again soon) and I feel they need to roll it out slowly to make sure everything they need is out there. ie testing, equipment, treatments, etc....
Should be interesting how it all plays out because at this point, we don't know how this does all play out.Last edited by roadman; 04-14-2020, 01:00 PM.Comment

It's segregated along different lines today, but we were far from singing "Kumbaya" back then, either.Comment

And without going back to the days of the colonies and listing each group that's been scapegoated (or worse) throughout American history, I hope the same mistakes aren't repeated with Chinese-Americans. After this thing settles a little bit more and people start looking to ramp up the blame game, I could see some folks oddly holding Chinese-Americans accountable for decisions of the Chinese government.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

He has mainly left the choices up to the local mayors. Florida also hasn't been hit like you think it would with the older and sicker population.
As long as the athletes are cleared, this is nothing. They won't have fans and will only employees who are negative will be in the building.

He’s a moron, and he’s going to get thousands of citizens killed. The IHME model that the government is using to project when hospitals will get overwhelmed sees a peak in Florida on Nay 6th.
And that’s assuming they will do more than they are, not less.
Our projections assume that Florida will implement 3 out of 4 social distancing measures by April 19, 2020.
As of our most recent update on April 13, 2020, Florida had only implemented 2 out of 4 social distancing measures.
Went to store today, and it just amazes me how many people are out and about. The grocery store I shop at announced they were going to require masks for customers. My wife actually made me one and I wore it today. For some Reston, I’d say 30-40% of customers were not wearing masks.
Leadership matters, and no one is enforcing anything. We’ve been averaging over 240 new cases a day for a week now. He hope is that this is the peak. Today showed me why it’s not. More people will die, and the shutdowns will last longer if we don’t start taking this serious.Comment

I've posted here before about Sweden's novel coronavirus approach (i.e., herd immunity). They just crossed 1,000 deaths today and have one of the highest per million death rates in the world.

I’m in Missouri, and in a similar boat. Our peak is 4/28. We also only have 2 of the four measures in place. Parsons doesn’t seem as dumb a DeSantis, but he’s just been absent.

Allowing WWE to host shows with quarantined entertainers won't have any effect on the public. You are at more risk going to the grocery store than sitting at home and watching the WWE on TV. It's not like a bunch of people are getting together that aren't being tested and passing, then going out in public to keep spreading it.
It's very similar to how the economy startup is going to happen. The rapid testing, temperature checks, antibodies tests, etc will get people back to work. As long as we had enough rapid tests now, we could already be back to work.

Looks like that phone meeting a few weeks back did lead to something else besides the eventual Florida ease up on essential businesses.
Members of the panel such as Gary Bettman, Adam Silver, Rob Manfred, Vince McMahon, Dana White, Jerry Jones and others will help advise the US on restarting the economy.Comment

As long as you test everyone, keep them isolated from non-tested people, there is less risk than any other person sitting at home.

Re: CDC Officials Warn of Coronavirus Outbreaks in the United States.
Florida hospitals won't be overwhelmed. There are a bunch of hospitals and even the models show there will be 0 shortage. Some reason the death rate is lower than normal in Florida, even for the older population. I'm not sure why, maybe the heat, humidity, etc. Infection rates are also lower, so people either have milder cases or people are doing what they should on their own. The models also keep moving the peak date while lowering the peak deaths, meaning flattening the curve. The problem is when you flatten it, it expands the width of the curve and Florida is now seeing that.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment
