Clippers off to rough start after loss to Suns

LOS ANGELES, CA -- The Los Angeles Clippers are on the wrong side of a streak to start the 2019-20 season. A Saturday night loss to the Phoenix Suns leaves the Clippers without a win through their first three games. While there are still 79 games left in the regular season, a 0-3 start may be unsatisfactory to some.

For a team with the level of talent they have, especially on offense, these first three games have been underwhelming. Currently, the Clippers are shooting 40.2 percent from the field and 33.6 percent from beyond the arc. Their loss to the Suns was the first time they showed life on offense. Unfortunately the defense did not show up in that game.

The Clippers big free agent acquisition, two-time NBA champion Kawhi Leonard, has not looked great in these games either. In the first two games, Leonard had a combined 42 points on 12-of-36 shooting from the floor while going 2-for-11 from 3-point range. A hip injury did not seem to slow him down against the Suns as he went for 29 points, seven rebounds and five assists on 11-of-17 shooting.

Injuries have been a big part of the offseason and start of the regular season for the Clippers. The team's other big offseason acquisition, six-time All-Star forward Paul George, had two offseason shoulder surgeries. George would not only miss all of the team's offseason activities, but he would also miss the first few regular season games as well. With all of the changes that were made over the summer, there was crucial time missed where the players could work together.

The injury situation did not end there for the Clippers. During the team's home opener both guard Louis Williams and forward/center Montrezl Harrell both were injured. While Williams' injury was minor, Harrell was expected to miss a few games. With guard Rodney McGruder also not available as he recovered from an ankle injury, the team's depth was starting to wither.

Despite being short-handed, the Clippers have a chance to get back on track next week. Monday, the Clippers host the Charlotte Hornets before playing their first set of back-to-back games this season against the Utah Jazz and San Antonio Spurs. Games against less talented teams like the Hornets are not guaranteed wins. The Clippers experienced that in their loss to the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night. Getting a win and being able to execute on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court will boost the team's confidence going forward.
