And a look at the first list of awards candidates for the 2018 season has got some of Linehan’s fingerprints on it. Tyrod Taylor is becoming the QB the Bills didn’t think he would and is suddenly a MVP candidate. Unheralded Cameron Meredith and Kevin White (yes, that Kevin White, whose 5th year option was not picked up) are in the running for the NFC’s top receiver nod, rookie receiver Cameron Kirk is up for NFC Offensive Rookie of the Year, and Jordan Howard is on the running backs list. All without that Dallas o-line, it should be noted. Shouldn’t Linehan be a dark horse coach of the year candidate as well? A Bungled Season Under rookie head coach Anthony Lynn, the Cincinnati Bengals will be missing the playoffs for a second consecutive year (for the first time in a decade). Book it. For more than a month, Andy Dalton will not have Tyler Eifert and Tyler Boyd as targets, meaning opposing defense can put more coverage on A.J. Green and can focus more on stopping Gio Bernard. Expect Cincy’s point production to suffer and for the 3-5 Bungles to remain in the cellar of the AFC North. Giant Win! Giants Win! The sanctity of Detroit’s 0-16 season is once again safe as the G-Men erased their status as the league’s only winless team. With a win over NFC East front-runner Philadelphia no less. If their laying low for Lamar Jackson, the win didn’t hurt New York’s draft status, as the competition is still all at least 2 games better. And what else do Giants fans have to do but bandy about potential successors to Ben McAdoo and speculate about what would be done with the first overall pick? Re: California Dreamin'
Although many thought that the Kansas City Chiefs would dispatch the Los Angeles Rams, ending LA’s modest winning streak at 2 games, the Rams themselves had other ideas and sent KC packing back home with its second loss of the 2018 season. Thanks to a 54 yard touchdown dash by Todd Gurley in the opening series followed by Lamarcus Joyner’s pick-six in the next, the Rams had the Chiefs down 14-zip before they fully realized what had hit them. And when rookie James Washington hauled in a 46 yard strike from Jared Goff, LA was up 21-0 with less than 10 minutes of the first quarter gone. Despite the Rams’ fast start petering out, with only 10 more points scored during, the remainder of the game, a mortal wound was already inflicted and the Chiefs were left to die a slow death even though they managed to outscore LA 16-10 over the final three-plus quarters. Washington and Alshon Jeffery ended up accounting for 224 of Goff’s 283 passing yards, while Gurley was sent back to the stable early, carrying only 11 times. After KC got on the board with Alex Smith’s first quarter TD toss to De’Anthony Thomas, the LA defense, which record 5 sacks, pitched two quarters of shutout ball before allowing the Chiefs to find paydirt again, by which time the Rams held a 31-7 lead.
Todd Gurley finds daylight on the way to the end zone Lamarcus Joyner’s pick-six gave the Rams 14-0 lead before their second offensive possession. Aaron Donald records a sack of Alex Smith. Several defenders have seen the back of Alshon Jeffery’s jersey this season. This time it meant a 21-0 LA lead. E.J. Gaines logs one of his two takedowns of Smith. Highlight Reel (8:41): |

Re: California Dreamin'
1. NEW YORK GIANTS: Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville Forget the other young signal callers on the roster. If the G-Men have the no. 1 pick, they’ll be all over Lamar Jackson. Another other pick and they’ll never hear the end of it. 2. MIAMI: Wilton Speight, QB, Michigan The under-achieving Phins are headed for a new head coach-QB combo. Adam Gase has made some small inroads with Ryan Tannehill, but he hasn’t maximized his roster’s potential. And while Tannehill has played some great games, he’s offset those with terrible ones, and he’s too deep into his career to be so inconsistent. The new regime will likely be anxious to start with with a new man under center. Speight, who has prototypical size and who has been mentored by Jim Harbaugh, is the only other QB with a first round grade. 3. BUFFALO: Drue Tranquill, SS, Notre Dame Sean McDermott’s defense has 9 solid starters. The other 2 are the safeties, and Tranquill, a scaled-down Kam Chancellor, is a top 5 prospect. 4. DETROIT: Jaylon Jones, CB, Ole Miss The Lions have a very good front 7 but the secondary needs work. Darius Slay is on an island by himself and Jones, who is the only corner in the class with a first round grade, could help alleviate that. 5. CHICAGO (f. JACKSONVILLE): Albert Huggins, DT>DE Clemson If they were one pick higher, the Bears would be taking Jaylon Jones. The Jags may give them the opportunity to get Jones, but here they must look elsewhere. Montravious Adams and Christian Wilkins have not been able to make up for Akiem Hicks’ defection to Green Bay. 6. SAN FRANCISCO: Chris Evans, RB, Michigan If the Niners don’t end up picking first or second, there will be no fight between ownership and Josh McDaniels as to who to pick. And if they’re picking behind anybody needing a corner, they’re out of luck there so it’s on to another sore spot unless they package their two first round picks for an upward move. As much as Jones would help the worst group of corners in the NFL, the Niners would be better off getting two players from those picks. Carlos Hyde’s lack of productivity cannot be wholly blamed on the o-line and it’s wearing thin on the organization, and with former no. 4 picks Zeke Elliott and Leonard Fournette among the league’s elite ball-carriers, there will be no hesitation in pulling the trigger on Evans at no. 6 overall. If Evans can make opponents start to respect the Niners’ running game, life will be easier for Jimmy G and receivers Curtis Samuel and Simmie Cobbs Jr. 7. WASHINGTON: Tremaine Edmunds, OLB, Virginia Tech One offseason was not enough to fully transition to Matt Patricia’s New England-style defense, which needs Ryan Kerrigan and Trent Murphy playing as ends. 8. CINCINNATI: Bobby Okereke, MLB, Stanford 2017 second-rounder Raekwon McMillan has not been the field general the Benagls have been needing ever since Rey Mauluga went to crap. 9. SAN FRANCISCO (f. BALTIMORE): Brandon Fanaika, G, Stanford Mike Iupati came back to San Francisco this season, but he’s 31. Joshua Garnett may move to one of the tackle positions in 2019, and the viability of Damien Mama/Anthony Davis in a staring role is dubious. if the pick acquired from the Ravens puts the Niners in position to select the best guard in the class, it would be a sound decision after investing the earlier pick in a “skill position”. 10. NEW ORLEANS: Mark Andrews, TE, Oklahoma The Saints never have made up for trading away Jimmy Graham, and if this is Drew Brees’ final season, having another target to complement the solid WR group would be a boon to the new guy. If the top of the order changes, New Orleans could also make a play to move up for a QB if a Brees successor is needed and not acquired prior to the draft. Another possibility at 10 would be a running back- Mark Ingram will be 29 next year and he hasn’t played in 16 games in a season since 2012, and rookie second-rounder Ronald Jones II isn’t an every-down guy. 11. NEW YORK JETS: Byron Cowart, DE, Auburn Even if Eric Decker is not on the roster in 2019, the emergence of DeDe Westbrook looks like it will negate for the Jets to consider a WR in round 1, given the depth of the class at the position. Gang Green is another team which has a rookie head coach who switched defensive schemes even those the puzzle was missing some pieces, and in this scenario the Jets would find themselves in the position of having their pick from the edge rusher crop. 12. OAKLAND: Ahmmon Richards, WR, Miami Team needs at other positions have given the Raiders the pick of the litter from a deep WR group. Michael Crabtree has never run away from anybody and he’ll be 31 next season, and given his price tag the Raiders may move on from him after this year. Giving Derek Carr another fast toy with Dalvin Cook keeping opposing defenses honest could be a scary prospect. 13. ARIZONA: Toby Weathersby, OT, LSU If the Cards are getting the first shot at an OT, they’ll take it. Jared Veldheer allowed 21 sacks both in 2016 and 2017 and has been injured a good part of this one. Frankly it would be a shock to see him on Arizona’s roster in 2019. Regardless of whether D.J. Humphries is moved to LT, a replacement on one side or the other is going to be needed. 14. HOUSTON: Connor Williams, OT, Texas 33-year-old Duane Brown has rejected every contact offer the Texans have made him and is destined for free agency or retirement. 15. INDIANAPOLIS: Jawaan Taylor, OT, Florida Anthony Castonzo is hazardous to Andrew Luck’s health. 16. ATLANTA: Ryan Bates, G, Penn St. RG Wes Schweitzer is backup material and LG Andy Levitre is 32 and in decline. 17. CAROLINA: Nick Bosa, DE, Ohio St. At this point in Charles Johnson’s career, Bosa will be an immediate upgrade. 18. PORTLAND: Andrew Wingard, FS, Wyoming Eric Weddle 2.0. 19. SEATTLE: Brian Burns, DE, Florida St. Frank Clark has yet to re-sign and Cliff Avril will be 33 in 2019. 20. CHICAGO: Michael Dieter, C, Wisconsin Da Bears stay in the trenches with their second first round pick. Cody Whitehair showed promise as a rookie but has stagnated since. 21. DENVER: Deebo Samuel, WR, South Carolina Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders will be 31 and 32 in 2019 and their best days already seem to be well behind them. 22. TENNESSEE: Isaac Nauta, TE, Georgia This is expected to be 34-year-old Delanie Walker’s final season, and the reigning Super Bowl champions aren’t expected to have a more glaring need. 23. OAKLAND (f. CLEVELAND): Reggie Walker, DE, Kansas St. The health of Mario Edwards Jr. is a concern, as is his maddening inconsistency. OLB is another option. 24. DALLAS: Shaquille Quarterman, MLB, Miami Nothing is official yet, but the word out of Dallas is that Sean Lee is pondering retirement after this season. 25. TAMPA BAY: Dexter Lawrence, DT, Clemson Rookie Arden Key has enhanced the Bucs’ pass rush to the extent that they’re NFC South contenders, and they could well look to solidify the interior of the D-line if an upgrade over Akeem Spence is available. 26. PHILADELPHIA: Clifton Duck, CB, Appalachian St. Here’s the first true reach in the first round, but corner his Philly’s biggest need and taking a player project as an early second-rounder is not a reach of unforgivable dimensions. This could well be a trade-back spot for the Iggles. 27. PITTSBURGH: Demetris Robertson, WR, Cal There’s going to come a day when the Stillers won’t be able to pay both Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant. 28. KANSAS CITY: Deondre Francois, QB, Florida St. Francois is not a first round projection, but the Chiefs are so well-stocked that they do not have a position that demands selecting any other player who would still be on the board at 28. MVP candidate Alex Smith seems to be fed up with KC’s front office and will be a free agent in 2019. Another playoff failure, and the Chiefs may not choose to pursue him anyway. Even if Smith and the Chiefs are together again in 2019, Kansas City needs a better developmental backup than Tyler Bray. If KC has a QB in place prior to the draft, this would likely be a trade back spot. 29. LOS ANGELES: Ross Pierschbacher, G, Alabama Nothing would please the Rams more than to have a Round 1 worthy corner available when they pick, but the class won’t accommodate that this far back. This becomes a search for the BPA at another position of need, and if there is a guard available that would be an improvement over RG Jamon Brown, that could well be LA’s pick. Another factor that may be in play is the potential retirement of center Nick Mangold. 30. GREEN BAY: Trenton Irwin, WR, Stanford Jordy Nelson is 33 and in the past offseason the Pack chose not to address the loss of Davante Adams. Also factor in that Jared Abbrederis is in a contract year and Jeff Janis will be in one next year, and first round caliber wideout seems like a wise investment. 31. NEW ENGLAND: Mike Weber, RB, Ohio St. LeGarrette Blount: 31. Dion Lewis: Brittle. The Pats are going to need a bell cow back to help ease the transition from Tom Brady to Jacoby Brissett. 32. MINNESOTA: Kevin Stepherson, WR, Notre Dame Laquon Treadwell has been slow to develop and if his fifth year option is not picked up, next year would likely be his final one in Minnesota. Letting him go would be easier with a replacement already in place. Stepherson has been a model citizen since his 2017 legal troubles, but there’s still plenty of time left for him to blow his draft status.

It’s the first sweep he’s suffered at their hands since Jim Harbaugh’s first season back in 2011. Although Jimmy Garoppolo was unable to finish the first meeting, he’s the winning starter in both games and perhaps that provides a small point of light at the end of the tunnel. The loss dropped the Hawks to only a game and half above San Francisco and 2 behind the division-leading Rams. Rivers Shines In First Game Of 2018 Josh Rosen has shown promise as Philip Rivers’ successor, but the key word there is successor. The Char-, er, Snowhawks are Rivers’ team until he chooses to retire or can no longer play at a high level. Upon returning from the injury that caused him to miss the first half of the season, Rivers showed no signs of decay. In Portland’s 45-35 win over Houston, he completed 29 of 36 passes for 348 yards and a pair of TD’s like he was never gone. Re: California Dreamin'
In the Rams’ final visit to the Black Hole, they tumbled into it. LA’s pass defense was exemplary in shutting down Derek Carr, with Lamarcus Joyner and Trumaine Johnson denying him access to Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree- Crab caught one pass for 10 yards and Coop was shut out. The NFL’s no. 1 rush defense, however, failed to show up, allowing Dalvin Cook to rush for 120 yards and a pair of scores and backup James Conner to chip in another 57 yards, leaving Oakland’s ground game a yard shy of a 200 yard day. Cook’s performance coupled with the lack of one by Jared Goff spelled out a 17-9 defeat in which the Rams were unable to find the end zone for the first time in head coach Sean McVay’s tenure. Goff’s outing was so tepid that with the Rams still theoretically in the game with an 8 point deficit, McVay gave 2017 postseason sensation Sean Mannion a chance to see if he could fare any better, but Mannion’s mojo was nowhere to be seen. The loss ends the Rams’ midseason winning streak at three games and leaves them only one ahead of Seattle in the NFC West race. The Seahawks were victorious in OT in a duel between Pete Carroll and former pupil Dan Quinn. For the Raiders, wining a game by shutting down a team that had appeared to be at the top of its game could be the shot in the arm they’ve been looking for and could be a catalyst for better days ahead for rookie head coach Kyle Shanahan and the Silver & Black.
Robert Quinn took the team lead in sacks here, but Ryan Anderson later took it back. E.J. Gaines leads all NFL DB’s in sacks. James Washington goes full extension for a catch. Dalvin Cook’s second touchdown put the Rams away. Maurice Alexander gets a breakup. With LA desperately needing 8 points to tie, Aaron Donald’s strip-sack and Gaines’ recovery gave the Rams great field position, but the offense was unable to convert. Highlight Reel (7:41): |
