Westbrook Outplays All Other Jet Receivers Combined

Subtract DeDe Westbrook’s stat line (11 catches, 164 yards, 1 TD) from Mitchell Trubisky’s in the Jets’ 31-17 loss to the Bills, and you have a stat line for the entire remainder of Gang Green’s receiving corps of 11 catches for 122 yards and a score.

Petty Shreds Pack

Bryce Petty? Yeah, him, formerly of the Jets. The surprise NFC Offensive Player of the Week completed 27 of 39 passes for 345 yards and 5 TD’s in Detroit’s stunning upset of the Packers. Is that a testament to what Petty learned from Jim Bob Cooter before being traded to the Lions, or an indictment of Green Green Bay’s secondary- the one that also got blistered by Sean Mannion in last season’s wild card round?

Game Notes
The incrementally improving Bears are a win away from .500 and two aways from matching their 2017 W column. The Rams, who were extremely flat in last week's loss at Oakland, do not need to help the Bruins with that. One of the game's key matchups will be LA nickel corner E.J. Gaines on slot receiver Kevin White. White had been pronounced a bust prior to the arrival of new head coach Scott Linehan, driving the Bears to invest their first round pick in Texas A&M's Christian Kirk. White, however, has flourished in Linehan's offense and is putting up some of the best receiving numbers in the league. Will the moon turn to blood next?

Re: California Dreamin'

Rams Shot Down By Emergency QB Connor Barth’s Golden BB

In what may have been the most colossal fail of the 2018 NFL season thus far, the Los Angeles Rams were defeated by the Chicago Bears, 23-20 at Soldier Filed. It’s not that LA lost to an inferior team. That in and of itself was bad enough. It was the manner in which the loss was dealt to the Rams that was a pill impossible to swallow.

Those unfamiliar with the concept of the “Golden BB" should watch the below video clip from Air America below. Fast forward to around 2:35 if you want to get to the point quickly.

In trailing 10-6 at halftime, the Rams made it 8 consecutive quarters that they had failed to score a touchdown, with the last one having come in the second quarter of the Kansas City game. But they scored two in the second half, the latter, a 2 yard run by rookie Chase Edmonds, giving them a 20-16 lead with 10:35 left in the game. With the Bears threatening, on a 28 yard completion to Marquess Wilson down to the Los Angeles 21, Chicago QB Tyrod Taylor suffered broken ribs on a hit by a blitzing E.J. Gaines. On the following play, Maurice Alexander picked off backup Matt Barkley in the end zone. That was to be Barkley’s only attempt of the game. After another outstanding Johnny Hekker punt pinned the Bears down at the their 6, Barkley was flushed from the pocket on his next drop-back and narrowly avoided a safety in getting dropped by Robert Quinn at the 1, sustaining a back injury. Practice squad QB Matt Linehan, son of Bears head coach Scott, was in attendance but in street clothes an ineligible, leaving the passing duties to emergency QB Connor Barth, the Bears’ place kicker. After an exchange of punts and two consecutive incomplete passes, Chicago was in a 3rd and 10 at its 20 and the Rams were 21 seconds away from victory. It was then that Barth (at that point 4-of-9 for 21 yards) lofted a pass in the direction of Kevin White, who already had an earlier TD catch. White had gotten behind Trumaine Johnson, but Alexander was on the scene as well. But instead of making a hit to break up the play, Alexander went for another pick. Alexander, perhaps because he’s wired to go after the hard-thrown passes of an actual quarterback and not a lob tossed by a kicker playing one on TV, mis-timed his jump and whiffed, leaving White with nothing but open space in front of him, and T.J. McDonald did not have the pursuit angle or the closing speed to prevent White from scoring the 80 yard game-winning touchdown. LA head coach Sean McVay summed up the play in two words: “Simply unacceptable.”

Hot Seat Coaches

Bruce Arians, Cardinals 4-6
If the Cards finish below .500, Arians, who dealt with health issues during the 2016 season, will some some behind-the-scenes encouragement to retire and turn the reins over to head coach in waiting Harold Goodwin before Goodwin is lost to another team.

Adam Gase, Dolphins (3-7)
Should he get more than 3 years since Joe Philbin did? This team is better on paper than itmis on the field, and that comes down to coaching. It’s going to take a miracle for Gase to avoid a third consecutive losing season and save his job.

Ben McAdoo, Giants (1-9)
The G-Men were dreadful out of the gates and things haven’t gotten better since Eli Manning returned from his preseason injury. While the o-line is one of the worst in the NFL, the defense should be playing well enough for New York to have only a 1 in the W column, but it isn’t.

Jim Caldwell, Lions (4-6)
The Leos dropped 6 straight after wins in Weeks 1-2. Now they’ve found ways two win another 2 games with Bryce Petty at the helm, making it more difficult for Caldwell to get a pass due to Matthew Stafford’s absence. The final six games will be critical to Caldwell’s fate, but management should keep in mind that he has a pair of new coordinators who are still getting their feet under them.

John Harbaugh, Ravens (4-6)
Could John Harbaugh be fired just two seasons removed from an AFC title? It depends on how bad it gets for the Ravens this year after they traded up to draft Sam Darnold, who has not been striking any Heisman poses lately.

Sean Payton, Saints (3-7)
Payton’s departure has been rumored at the end of almost every recent season. With New Orleans foundering and Drew Brees likely to retire, this could be the year that Payton and the organization agree to go their separate ways.

Mike McCoy, Snowhawks (5-5
After the team’s early playoff exit last season, owner Dean Spanos strongly hinted that it’s going to take some postseason success for McCoy to stick around.

Staford Cleared

Detroit’s medical staff has given Matthew Stafford the green light to start in Thursday night’s meeting with the Dolphins. Given the eye bleed potential of the teams’ Color Rush unis, this may be a game only their fans will care to watch.
