The Cardinals (56-50) dropped 3 games of a pivotal 4 game series against the Padres in San Diego over the weekend. The Cardinals are now 6 back of the Brewers in the NL Central and 4 games back of the Padres/Dodgers for the 2nd NL Wild Card and 10 games from the top wild card spot held currently by the Braves.
The Cardinals won the series opener Thursday night, but that is where the positives end. The next 3 games the bats would be silent, the fielding was suspect, and the pitching was inconsistent. Frustrating to say the least as the Cardinals entered the 2nd half of the season with the idea of being buyers at the deadline as they were in contention in both the division and wildcard. But after taking 2 of 3 from the Mets, the Cards have lost 5 of their last 6 and find themselves fading in the postseason race.
Now as the deadline is upon us, the Cardinals front office has decisions to make. Do you still buy, maybe cheaper to see if you can right the ship quickly for a chance at the Central Division crown, and even moreso the wildcard? Its likely Yadi and Waino's last run, do you go all in to get them to the postseason? Or do start selling off pieces to rebuild/reload for next year and year's to come knowing this year was going to be an uphill climb with the season ending injuries to Nolan Arenado and Harrison Bader, and injuries to key pieces (Gio Urshela) over the course of the year? Selling more expensive pieces locked under contract next season (Robbie Ray $23M) frees up more money this offseason to try to re-sign prized free agent Jack Flaherty as well as Alex Reyes in the bullpen. Or do you just stand pat and roll with what you have and see what happens, and then make financial and roster decisions for the future in November?
A lot to process for the front office of the Cardinals organization. Big dreams coming into the season, but injuries and subpar play have left the Cardinals in a position they didn't expect to be in at the deadline.
