Cardinals split 4 game series with Pirates in St.Louis

The Cardinals (32-18) split their 4 game series with the struggling Pirates in St.Louis to begin the week. The Cardinals now lead the NL Central by 4 games over the Brewers.

The Pirates had lost 10 straight coming into the series and the Cardinals extended that to 12 games by winning the first two games of the series, but faltered on Wednesday and Thursday. To makes matters worse, the Cardinals placed RHP Dakota Hudson on the 15 day IL with a shoulder injury.

The Cardinals offense went extinct on Wednesday and Thursday and the injury to Hudson on Thursday beat up an already taxed bullpen from the 3 previous games, especially Wednesdays game when Jake Odorizzi only lasted 5 innings before being knocked out. His inability to have consistent starts is beginning to become a concern of both the coaching staff and front office.

The Cardinals will remain home as they welcome the Dodgers to town for a 3 game weekend series.

So, unfortunately, nothing particularly interesting happened down the stretch for me, season over, we finished 71-91.

Some highlights would be Austin Meadows, unquestionably the team POY, finished with a .285 average, .371 OBP, 32 HR and 95 RBI, was an All-Star, Silver Slugger, and Hank Aaron Award winner. Legit stud.

Javy Baez finished at .209, 24 HR, 66 RBI, 178 K (led majors).

Jonathan Schoop had a remarkably decent year, and I say remarkably bc it seemed like he sucked all year to me; nonetheless he finished at .227, 21 HR & 55 RBI in 137 games.

Miguel Cabrera hit just .223 with an OBP of .273 (holy god I’m just seeing that now, brutal) with 6 HR and 42 RBI.

Matt Manning (9-4, 3.26) had an excellent season, albeit in somewhat limited action.

          * * * OFF SEASON * * *

          • Rule-5 draft we scooped RP Michael Feliz (71 OVR, C potential, 29yo)

          • Lost Jeimer Candelario because I don’t even f’kn know, I offered a contract and next thing I knew he was gone

          • Big-money, “new toy” signing: 1B Max Muncy. 3 years, back-loaded deal worth roughly $36M. This signing addresses the loss of Candelario and moves Spencer Torkelson to 3B

          * * *

          Playing spring games now.

          Current lineup against RHP:

          1. RF Victor Reyes
          2. SS Javier Baez
          3. 1B Max Muncy
          4. LF Austin Meadows
          5. DH Miguel Cabrera
          6. CF Riley Greene
          7. 2B Jonathan Schoop
          8. 3B Spencer Torkelson
          9. C Jake Rogers

          And against LHP:

          1. SS Javier Baez
          2. 2B Jonathan Schoop
          3. 1B Max Muncy
          4. DH Miguel Cabrera
          5. C Eric Haase
          6. 3B Spencer Torkelson
          7. RF Austin Meadows
          8. LF Ryan McBroom
          9. CF Derek Hill

          * * *

That reminds me, I let Tucker Barnhart walk, that’s kind of noteworthy.

            BOX SCORE

The Tigers overpowered the New York Yankees in game one of the American League Championship Series, winning 13-4. The Tigers pounded 15 hits, including 3 home runs. Jeimer Candelario went 3-3 with a home run, and drove in 4 to pace the Detroit attack. Casey Mize started, and pitched 7 strong innings, allowing just one run on 8 hits, striking out 7.

The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, on an RBI double by Juan Soto, and an RBI single by Miguel Cabrera. The Yankees put runners on the corners with 1 out in the top of the second, but Mize enduced a strike out, and a pop out to get out of the jam.

The Tigers added another run in the bottom of the 2nd, on a solo home run by Jeimer Candelario, making it 3-0. The Yankees got a run in the top of the 4th, on an RBI single by Wilson Contreras, but Anthony Rizzo was thrown out at home ending the inning. The Tigers all but put the game away in the bottom of the 4th, on a 3 run home run by Kyle Dutcher, his 3rd of the post season, making it 6-1. They added 2 more in the 5th, on a 2 run double by Candelario.

Detroit really put the game out of reach with a 5 run 7th, highlighted by a 2 run home run by Riley Greene. Jonathan Schoop, Candelario, and Javier Baez also had RBI in the inning. The Yankees would score three runs in the 8th off of Michael Fulmer, including a Giancarlo Stanton 2 run home run, but that would be all they would get.

Game 2 of the series will be Sunday night at Comerica Park. Tarik Skubal pitches for the Tigers, against Luis Severino of the Yankees. Game time is 7:05PM.

In the National League, the New York Mets beat the Dodgers 4-2, to take a 2 games to none lead in the NLCS. The Mets won game 1 2-1. The series will shift to Los Angeles for game 3 on Monday. Jacob deGrom pitches for the Mets, Julio Urias goes for the Dodgers.

Cardinals place Dakota Hudson on 15 Day IL

The Cardinals have placed RHP Dakota Hudson on the 15 Day IL due to a shoulder issue. Hudson left his start the other day in the 5th inning due to the discomfort. He's not expected to miss significant time with the injury. Hudson was just 1-4 on the year, but has a respectable 3.87 ERA with a WHIP just over 1.2.

LHP Reid Detmers was recalled from Memphis to fulfill the spot in the rotation. Detmers hasn't had the best of seasons in AAA thus far with a 4-6 record and a 4.32 ERA to go along with it.

I’m curious, I’m about 50 games into my current save but I wanted to see what everyone in here thinks the least used team, or most unpopular team to use in Franchise Mode would be. Who do you never see or hear of not getting used?

I’m excited to see who everyone picks!

Usually it’s the powerhouse teams like the Dodgers, Astros, and Yankees, mostly because the ones who post here like a challenge, so unless they’re your favorite team, you stay away.

I use my favorite team the Red Sox every time, I’ve tried others but never get very far before going back to Boston. While Boston has had some big names, and very good lineups, they are very inconsistent when it comes to winning seasons, which is why I don’t mind losing with them. For me, if a team always wins, and you crank up the difficulty so they can lose, it’s kinda unrealistic even though it happens in real life sometimes. That’s why I struggle sometimes using the Patriots in Madden.

                  Sorry to ramble!

                      BOX SCORE

Just a day after pounding the Yankees for 13 runs and 16 hits, the Tigers on Monday night managed just 5 hits against Yankee pitching. But they made them count, earning a 2-1 victory for a 2-0 lead in the American League Championship Series. Miguel Cabrera and Jonathon Schoop hit solo home runs, and Tarik Skubal, Lucas Sims, and Gregory Soto made it stand up. Skubal went 8 innings, allowing just 5 hits, and 1 earned run, striking out 11. Lucas Sims and Gregory Soto combined for a scoreless 9th.

Detroit took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd, on Schoop's solo home run. The Yankees tied the game in the 3rd, on an RBI single by D.J. LeMahieu. Miguel Cabrera homered in the 7th, to put the Tigers up 2-1.

The series now shifts to New York for games 3, 4, and 5 if necessary. Tyler Mahle will start for the Tigers on Wednesday, against Jameson Taillon.

Have a day Pete Alonso! He's baaaaaack....

Game one of the three game set in Miami Alonso went 3 for 5 with 3 HR and a ridiculous 7 RBIs. Scherzer was solid and bullpen held strong as we trounce the Marlins 9-1. Pete has bolstered our offense just like we needed. 60 games without him was a lot. Crossing fingers he stays healthy rest of the year.

Cardinals lose Tyler O'Neill for the season

The Cardinals have lost OF Tyler O'Neill for the season due to a torn labrum. O'Neill who was the 2023 Homerun Derby Champion and National League HR Leader last year, was injured after making a catch and crashing into the wall in the 4th inning Friday night against the Dodgers.

O'Neill was hitting just .218 at the time of injury but had 10 homeruns and 29 RBI's. He's also been outstanding in the field with his glove.

For now the Cardinals have recalled Lars Nootbaar from Memphis to fill the vacant roster spot. Adam Duvall will shift from 1st base to left field, Gio Urshela from shortstop to first base, Tommy Edman from 2nd base to shortstop, and Nolan Gorman will enter the everyday lineup for the time being at 2nd base.

Not sure how the Cardinals proceed, but its just the end of May, first of June so they have time to sort things out, providing they don't see their 3 game lead in the division quickly dissipate.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

                                BOX SCORE

The Tigers shocked the New York Yankees, rallying from 3 runs down in the top of the 9th, eventually winning the game in the 12th, to grab a commanding 3 games to none lead in the best of seven American League Championship Series.

The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 3rd, on Kyle Dutcher's 4th home run of the post season. But the Yankees came right back with 2 in the bottom of the 3rd, on an Aaron Judge 2 run home run, his first of the post season.

Jameson Taillon kept the Tigers in check through 6 innings, allowing just the one run on 4 hits, striking out 7. Jonathan Loaisiga and Chad Green pitched a scoreless inning each, getting the game to the 9th inning. The Yankees had picked up single runs in the 4th and 5th innings, to take a 4-1 lead into the 9th.

                                Thats when the fun began.

Aroldis Chapman came on in the 9th to try to protect a 4-1 led. Javier Baez led off the 9th with a home run to left, cutting the Yankee lead to 4-2. Juan Soto then followed with a home run to right, cutting the lead to 4-3. Spencer Torkelson then hit a home run to left, tying the game at 4. Clay Holmes would then replace Chapman, and got the Yankees out of the inning with the score tied.

Neither team scored in the 10th or 11th. In the 12th, Jonathan Schoop singled, then Jeimer Candelario homered to center, scoring Schoop, giving the Tigers a 6-4 lead. Javier Baez was hit by a pitch, and scored on a double by Juan Soto, putting the Tigers up 7-4. Gregory Soto allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the 12th, but retired the next 3 Yankees in order to seal the game, and give the Tigers a three games to none lead in the series.

Game 4 will be Wednesday night in New York. Eduardo Rodriguez starts for Detroit. The Scheduled starter for the Yankees is Jordan Montgomery, though there is speculation that Gerrit Cole could come back on short rest to start the game.
