The Cardinals (59-50) split their mini 2 game series with the Tigers mid-week in St.Louis. The Cardinals though find themselves 1/2 game up on the Reds in the Central as the Reds struggled with the Cubs.
The Cardinals lost Tuesday night despite a good outing by Carlos Martinez. He went 7 innings giving up 2 runs on 5 hits with 4 strikeouts, but received little offensive help. The Cardinals only offense was from Nolan Gorman who recording both RBI's in a 3-2 extra innings loss, including the game tying homerun in the 9th to send it to extras.
On Wednesday Jake Odorizzi earned his major league best 13th win of the season as the Cardinals provided offense and runs to a 7-2 victory. Paul Goldschmidt led the way with 3 RBI's including a 2 run homerun in the first. Tommy Edman who was moved to leadoff this game, went 1 for 1 with a homerun, 2 RBI's and 3 walks.
The Cardinals remain in St.Louis as they welcome the Reds to town for a pivotal 4 game weekend series. With the Brewers 4.5 back, the Cardinals can get a comfortable lead with a sweep or at least put some distance between them and the Reds with a series win.
The Cardinals have activated 3B Nolan Arenado from the 10 Day IL. Arenado was there with a sprained knee. With Arenado coming back into the lineup, the Cards optioned IF Edmundo Sosa to Memphis where he will be the everyday SS to get consistent at-bats. Gorman was thought to be going down, but with Malcolm Nunez playing well at 3rd base and Devin Mann at 2nd base, there wasn't a spot for him to get everyday at-bats, so he will remain in St.Louis for the time being. Sosa is expected to return with the September call ups in 3 weeks if no prior.
