The Red Sox announced this afternoon that left-hander Rich Hill has been placed on the 15-day injured list with elbow tendonitis, which will cause him to miss at least his next two starts, depending on how everything progresses. Taking his spot in the rotation will be right-hander Nick Pivetta who has been recalled from Worcester.
Pivetta has spent most of the year in Triple-A after losing the final rotation spot to the aforementioned Hill this spring. Pivetta did make two starts earlier this season while filling for an injured James Paxton.
In other news, the Red Sox also announced a pair of releases and signings for their Double-A affiliate Portland Sea Dogs with one involving a notable former major league closer. Boston announced the release of reliever Michael Feliz and first baseman Ryan McBroom, both of whom were minor league signees this offseason. To fill those spots, the team signed former Kansas City minor leaguer Marlin Willis, and former Rangers All-Star closer Neftali Feliz.
Willis, 23, has spent most of his professional career in the bullpen, but the Red Sox have other plans as they have announced he will be joining the Sea Dogs rotation.
As for the now 33 year-old Feliz, he has been hoping for one last major league opportunity, and it seems he may soon get his wish. Feliz obviously isn't the once All-Star closer he was earlier in his career, but the Red Sox are hoping his still has something left in the tank. To begin his Red Sox tenure, Feliz will join Willis in Double-A as he gets things in motion.
